Where to eat/shop/drink in Greenwood Heights?
I second Eagle Provisions and Jubilat. For restaurants, try Eurotrip on 5th Ave and 19th (I think) - great Eastern European food with a modern twist. Across the street from Eagle is a coffee place (Roots Cafe) which used to be not so great but now has new owners and is actually really good. Vin Rouge is a wine bar right across from Eagle - I really like this place - very mellow, all wines by the glass, nice bartenders. Thay have scrabble night on sundays which sounds dorky but is fun. Finally, Rossman Fruit and Veg on 3rd ave and 25th (I think?) is great to know about - a huge fruit and vegetable place with great variety (not organic though) and amazing prices. also some groceries, but mainly fruit and vegetables. Check it out, it is hard to describe but very useful to have so nearby
last minute anniv. dinner tomorrow - buttermilk channel, vinegar hill house...
I know these places don't take reservations for 2 ppl, so we would have to wait, but we just got a sitter, so we are a little late on the draw... any feedback on these places (have searched the other reviews on this board already)? Any other suggestions - DUMBO, Park Slope, Clinton Hill, Ft Greene or Prospect Heights are where we would prob be able to get to. thanks
What to do for New Year's Eve in Paris?
Will be in Paris for 5 days around the New Year - what are some good suggestions for new year's eve - we don't want to do something to traditional and fancy, but rather have good food and a fun evening. Price isn't really an issue. We are staying in the 8th. thanks
EuroTrip is delish!!
i agree - this place is in my neighborhood and we've been there a few times. I haven't had the brunch, but the dinner menu is great - solid Middle/Eastern European roots, but with creative touches. The room is not terribly attractive and there's no outdoor space, those are my main complaints
has anyone been to Euro Trip on 5th Ave/19th
they opened this week i have not been but I looked at the menu in the window and was excited to try - sort of updated/interesting eastern european.
Toby's Public House
I agree with rd135. I am usually not one to balk at prices if the food is good, but I feel like Toby's is way out of line for the neighborhood. It is odd since it is the same owners as Kitchen Bar which is pretty decently priced - the food is OK, but we live a few blocks away and go there pretty often when we just want a quick dinner. Also, I feel like Toby's is limiting itself by just having pizza, salad and antipasto. How about some good sandwiches or a few other appetizers?? The truffle pizza is good, but for $18 I would rather have an entree at al di la or any number of other places...
Beer Table, Park Slope
I went to a private event there awhile back. the owners served cheese and charcuterie which was from GRAB. They also served a bunch of house-made pickled things - green beans, beets, carrots etc which were delicious and various dried fruit and vegetable chips that they made there as well. I went opening night and I think they were probably just too swamped to break that stuff out.
vin rouge on 5th ave/18th in brooklyn
We've been twice now - it's so close to our house, I want to go more often. Not much food to speak of - just cheese, charcuterie etc, though the bartender said they are going to have fondue soon... It is never busy when I walk past and I hope this place stays open. They have tons of interesting wines by the glass (prob like 30 or 40 choices) and I think they change them often. The bartender I met on my 2 occasions there was very knowledgeable and when ew got to chatting offered us tastes of some other wines he thought we might like. Just mentioning it here because I like it there and want it to stay open!
as a chowhound how do you keep from getting fat???
Back in the day, I could eat whatever I wanted - no as I close in on 4o and have had 2 kids, my metebolism has changed and I can no longer eat with abandon (although I love to). Even with watching what I eat and exercising, I still feel like it is a battle - there is so much I want to eat and cook. I live in Brooklyn, so there is always a new restaurant to try, interesting ingredients to cook with, a new food stand with a delicious something or other... any suggestions on how to enjoy food and continue to fit through the door at the restaurants?
has anyone seen fresh porcini in any stores?
I know it is a little early... has anyone seen them anywhere yet??

are fresh porcini available yet?
looked a few places in manhattan today - not yet, anywhere in BK (or manhattan for that matter)
PARK SLOPE FOOD COOP: what's good this week? (pt 3)
i was there yesterday they were selling teh salmon filleted - so 1 side was less than $20 or so. I think the price changes every week, based on what it costs the Coop, but yesterday, that's what they had. We also got great heirloom tomatoes for $2.49 a lb (which where $5.00 at Union Mkt).
To Park Slope Food Co-op or not?
I thought I would post because I just finished working my shift at the coop... once again, I had a perfectly pleasant experience, no altercations with any weirdos, etc. I have never had a hard time with anyone at the coop. And so what if I did? I've certainly had awful people on line with me at Fairway (like the woman who asked for tastes of every turkey before ordering when there were about 20 other ppl waiting) or Sahadi or wherever. I have a busy life - 2 kids, work full time at home, etc etc etc - but I make time for the coop because i like what it stands for (or my version of what it stands for) and for the great quality and prices. While you will find some of the same produce at GAP, you usually don't get the selection there is at the coop- certainly not organic versions of it. I could go on and on about all the great experiences I've had there (a woman with twin babies was trying to check out and one of the babies was screaming - one lady came over and joked with the baby to calm her and another person who was shoppibfhelped the woman bag her groceries to get out faster so she could pick up the baby). I could go on and on about the great stuff I've found there - there was a huge selection of organic seeds for sale this year - I planted a bunch of varieties of leaf lettuce and have been cutting great salads all summer long. Bottom line, it can be a bit of a pain at times but isn't the philosphy of chowhounding that good food is worth a little extra time and effort?
New Place Coming Soon? -- Greenwood Hts
brick oven pizza place - same ppl as kitchen bar
where to buy goat meat in Brooklyn
I live in South Slope, so preferably someplace near there or accessible by bus or subway - thanks
QUARTER new bar in Brooklyn
agree - the basil drink was very good, very fresh tasting. owners are very nice, seem to know their stuff. I live a few blocks away and hadn't noticed it for the first few weeks - they don't have a sign and have a metal gate down during the day, so it is easy to miss. they had an opening BBQ this weekend, but I missed it.
New wine bar in South Slope...anyone been yet?
I also like the list - some interesting wines. I am glad to hear more food is coming.
Anyone have the Cuisinart Griddler?
I 've had one for 2 years - it is still in great shape and we use it several nights a week. Great for panini, quesadillas, etc - I also use it alot for grilled fish, burgers etc in the winter when I'm not going outside to grill. We use the griddle mainly for pancakes on weekends. it's a great appliance and it looks nice too!
Sidecar on 5th ave in South Slope?
I have seen the signage on the outside of this place (around 15th st) forever, but still hasn't opened - anyone know what it is and why it's still not open?
what to drink w/ tapas besides sherry
We're doing a little tapas party - chorizo, shrimp, sardines, frittata, etc (not sure of the whole menu yet) - will be serving sherry but would also like a wine to serve for those who don't like sherry - suggestions??
thanks

Brooklyn Chowhound needs places to eat in LA
You're right - It's like when people come to the NY board and ask for a NYC recommendation, it's definitely hard to narrow it down! My apologies... we are staying in Venice, and will mostly be in the West LA and Hollywood W. Hollywood areas, though we are heading to Studio City one day to visit old friends
thanks!
Brooklyn Chowhound needs places to eat in LA
Will be in LA with my husband (who is there for business) and my 2 kids, age 6 and 3. They are both good in restaurants and are adventurous eaters, so i am looking for places to go with them during the day - and also places to go with my husband at night while grandma babysits. thanks for any tips!
Soul Spot question?
What's the word on Soul Spot - my husband loves the place and wants me to get them to cater his Bday party (the big 4-0) - it is a very casual affair, so I don't care about fancy, just want good food and to not spend a bundle. They gave me a very reasonable quote, but is the food really that good? (ny husband has had it a few times, but I've only been once, so I've only tried one thing)
Or, if not Soul Spot - other suggestions??
thanks
What's the best fat for frying chicken?
Lard? Shortening? Veg oil or a combo or something else entirely?
what's the most exiting culinary experience in the USA (more)
we were hoping to limit to the US as we are going to invite friends and want to keep the flights inexpensive.
what's the most exiting culinary experience in the USA (more)
doesn't have to be a restaurant, but it could - I am looking more for "experiences" - like a once in a lifetime truffle dinner, etc - for spouse's 40th next yr - could be anytime in'06 though,
PARK SLOPE COOP: what's good this week? butter! what else?
The Dancing Deer cookies are great - I love the chewy almond molasses cherry (I think that's what they're called they are gingery and have little pieces of dried cherry in them) - I have seen Dancing Deer cookies in other stores, but the Coop has them for much less $$$. Also, this is a little more boring, but they are getting in a new crop of the garnet sweet potatoes - they are so sweet and delicious - they knock the socks off any other sweet potato. I just bake on and eat it for dinner when my husband and kids aren't home.
