Living Room Bar on Crenshaw/Adams
A friend tells me that this is one of the best hidden gem bars in the city. Anyone know if he's right? Outside looks questionable.
Johnny's/Johnnie's Pastrami
Are Johnnie's pastrami (in Culver City) and Johnny's Pastrami (on Adams blvd. in West Adams) related? Any thoughts as to the better location?
In my view, this type of Pastrami is a separate delicacy from the Jewish-deli-Langer's style, but just as delicious in its own way. And, rightly or wrongly, it's a food I associate with LA.
Moroccan that isn't Dar Maghreb
I love Chameau and am always surprised that it doesn't get more attention. It's not cheap, but not any more expensive that Dar Maghreb. The couscouses are great and very satisfying -- couldn't recommend it more.
Lou's on Vine -- Reports?
I've heard that this place is great, especially for food/wine parings. Any thoughts?
Pasquale's on San Vicente -- Great Find
On a friend's rec, stopped by Pasquale's cafe on San Vicente at Hauser. This is the kind of small, everyday, outside cafe plus decent lunch place I've been waiting for in LA -- but am constantly surprised to not find. A nice courtyard setting with a tree in the middle, a small coffee shop. I had a chopped salad, which was just about perfect; light dressing; my girlfriend had a very well prepared plate of Spaghetti.
Most importantly: The best espresso that I've found in LA, better than Cafe Tropical, which was my previous best.
Plus, it is next door to a shoe repair shop that appears to be affiliated, making it the only nice cafe-shoe repair combo restaurant I've ever heard of.
In any case, this is not the "best" restaurant in LA by any margin. But it is a very pleasant, very well-executed neighborhood cafe that I think deserves more attention and doesn't have a lot of nearby competition. At Saturday lunch, there were about eight people there, so hopefully they'll survive and thrive.
Opus -- Noise Factor
Have an occasion for a formal dinner this week, and am strongly leaning towards Opus, which I haven't tried yet. Let's just say this is an important conversation, so the place can't be too noisy. Jar on a Saturday night would be in the "too noisy" zone, to get a sense of my personal noisemeter. How noisy is Opus?
Title Philipino 101
I've lived in LA for most of my life, but have never really sought out the best in Philipino food. Mostly, I'm at a loss for where to go and what to order. I do remember getting fried chicken at the old Max's of Manila on Wilshire back in the olden days. Would anyone like to run through a list of (a) the best Philipino spots in greater LA for a newbie and (b) what to order? Thank you hounds.
Is there REAL AUTHENTIC Pho in Westminster?
I've had ca phe sua da at Golden Deli in San Gabriel, and I assume you can get it at other Vietnamese restaurants in the area. Of course, the beans used will probably differ from those you can find in Vietnam, but, personally, my tastebuds aren't sharp enough to pick up much of a difference, what with the sweetness of the condensed milk. More refined palates may disagree.
Where to go for Greek food in L.A?.
Yes, it's in a mall, and keep in mind that I'm not Greek or even from Detroit. But, personally, I love Ulysees, the Greek restaurant in the Farmers Market/Grove. I had their grilled octopus appetizer last week and thought it was better than the version I had at Papa Cristo's. Very pleasant atmosphere, too.
West Adams -- Any and All Suggestions
Thanks . . . will definitely have to check these out.
West Adams -- Any and All Suggestions
I'm two weeks away from a move to a new place in the West Adams area. The new place is a few blocks from the Crenshaw Phillips, which obviously will become a new (and waistline enhancing) favorite. But I need other choices, and this seems like a neighborhood that should be a haven for true hounds. Any and all favorites would be appreciated.
