anyone try Taste of Hartford yet?
We hit Barca on Friday. The cod cake and stuffed pepper apps were very tasty. We also got the Chorico tapa that was quite a good deal @ $5.00. The entrees were 50/50. The shrimp and scallop was delicious. The pork and clam entree was uninspired. Dry pork served lukewarm with no evidence of any "spicy wine sauce".
BBQ in CT
The BBQ truck on RT 1 in Milford in front of the Sports Authority makes a nice pulled pork sandwich.
First time visitor to West Palm Beach.
We love Havana. We go every time we are in town.
Dinner near i-84 from Waterbury through Hartford
Thanks for the note, I always enjoy reading a follow-up. I love Blackies, I consider them less dogs than relish delivery vehicles.
Bourdain Barbecue truck. Milford, CT
We were told that regs state that if he were to provide seats, he would have to provide a bathroom. That's CT for you.
I thought the sandwiches were great. Jen (above) nailed it, the meat had a "distinct, but not over- powering smoke flavor." We had a pulled pork sandwich, a baby back rib sandwich, 2 small sides of cole slaw and a big red beans and rice side. All for $20. out the door. I got the impression that this was a fella that takes pride in his food. If I worked in the area I would get lunch there at least once a week.
Hot Tomato's - disappointing
Weird night at Hot Tomato's in Hartford last week. We hadn't been in years due to a couple of less than satisfing visits in the past. We chose HT that night because I read about the return of a former chef and thought we would give the place another chance. Everything we ordered was off, some worse than others. We started with the Pasta Pillows. Pillow connotates soft. The sweet potato filling was not soft, it was hard, one was almost crunchy inside.
I was hoping they had the Giobatto. They did it was billed as the "Original" Giobatto. They even had the name of DiFiore pasta in bold on the menu. It wasn't quite the original but it was pretty good, except for the pasta. I don't remember the pappardelle pasta all stuck together before like this was. Clumps stuck to the bottom of the bowl and clumps of 4 and 5 noodles stuck together throughout. My girlfriend had the osso bucco . I thought she had to do too much trimming before she started to eat. She said the flavor was okay but she wasn't expecting it to be so tough.
Then it got a little weird. One of the staff came over and asked us how everything was. I didn't want to get into it, but he picked up on the fact she didn't eat most of the osso bucco and started pressing the issue. She mentioned that it tasted good but was too tough. He asked if we wanted him to take it off the bill. We hemmed and hawed then he said he would take it off. Then he mentioned that if we wanted good osso bucco we should go to this place in Southington (whose name escapes me). I'm thinking to myself, "Now you tell me, I thought we would get good osso bucco here."
When he comes back he says, "I didn't take the osso bucco off but I willl treat you to dessert." What was up with that? Thanks but no thanks, It was time for us to leave. I left feeling badly. I still remember my first visit to Hot Tomato's, it was awesome. I had many fine meals there, but those days are long gone apparently.

Hartford help please
Agave is a sit down place. I like the Habenero Pork tacos and the fresh Guacamole.
On a nice night, take a walk across the river to Mickey's Oceanic Grill and get the Fried Fish Sandwich. Roadfood has a nice write-up.

Mohegan Wine Festival on Jan 25...
I will second the above comments. The wine stinks and the big name cooking demos are a joke.
Brewers Art lately?
We are from out of town went to Brewer's Art this past Friday before the symphony. Our meals were so good, I felt compelled to hunt down a past thread to let everyone know. We had an app of General Tso's Sweetbreads. Have you ever heard of such a thing? Awesome. We also had Cod and Tuna entrees. The meals were both delicious and clever with the ingredients.
I must admit one hiccup. Our entrees came before I was done with my app. I hate that, but the food was so good I went with the flow.

My favorite Italian grinder in the area is from Italian Kitchen on Center St. in Manchester, CT. The Capacola grinder is just perfect.

I went to Cavey's last month and am going on Wednesday and I didn't find it played out. I like Firebox, too. Feng, perhaps?

Johnny Ad's. Abbot's, or Flanders Fish Market
I think Peznt sums up my feeling about Flanders based on a recent visit: Food OK, service less than OK. I'll take Lenny and Joe's every time over FFM.

Taste of Hartford - Costa del Sol
I can second this motion. I went on Sunday with four others. We all got the paella de la casa and had a great time. Paella is fun.
Taste of Hartford - Morton's Steakhouse
That's good to hear as I made reservations for next Wednesday. They were all booked on Open Table for last night.
Torrington, CT area pre-concert dinner recommendations please.
Looks like I'm a day late, but next time take a look at Northern Galapagos. We like that place when we visit Torrington.

Dress code at Max Downtown
Just for the record, I have visited a half-dozen restaurants (not including Max) during Taste of Hartford week and was never treated shabbily anywhere. Only once (Feng) did I have to ask for the Taste menu.
Papa Ginos
I agree. Papa's is best for satisfying the quick hankerin' with 2 slices and a soda.
Ice Cream Recommendations in Merrimack Valley?
What about Carter's in Haverhill? I used go there when I was kid.
Sushi in CT--let's talk about our favorite places
I like a hole-in-the-wall place on Broad Street in Manchester named Hana Sushi. It enjoyed it much better for sushi than Sakura, for instance. Try the Volcano Roll.

Looking for a great (but not expensive) lunch spot in Hartford
I really like Feng downtown. If that's a bit pricey, there's Mickey's just across the river in East Hartford for a great fish sandwich. It's a take-out place, but just grab your food and take a short drive to the riverfront.
Wickham Park in Manchester (short ride) has a disc golf course.
Non Coastal Seafood
I just had a top-notch fish and chips at City Fish in Wethersfield. It's a fish market but has a simple but clean sitting room where you can get a beer or glass of (cheap) wine. They close at 7:00.
Breakfast somewhere near Middletown, CT?
Cromwell Diner is right off exit 24 on I-91. They make their own Corned Beef Hash.
