Browsed the food goodies aisle at the new Williams Sonoma outlet in Westbrook Ct...

they had a great sale on Mexican vanilla and Belgian waffle mix - - I was happy to get the vanilla at such a great price and also interested to try the mix - I have been fanatical about making my own belgian waffle batter - but every once in a while, I wish I could find a tasty mix.....they also had a pancake batter with malt in it - which I have heard is the secret to luscious, fluffy pancakes...next time!

Oh yeah and could not resist the adult sized box of animal crackers!

Red House in Deep River, CT (was du Glacé)

LOL ! Thanks - I wouldn't have even thought they were open the other nite - exc as we were driving by - we saw someone come out the door so we turned around to give it a try

Red House in Deep River, CT (was du Glacé)

Oh I will go back as well - at least give it one more shot - maybe I will stick to wings, burgers and suds and go when they have music lined up!

didn't even know about ladies nite - they have not advertised at all locally - that was du glace's problem too - no marketing

Red House in Deep River, CT (was du Glacé)

well we went there tonite. the place was very busy and yes the menu looked like a fun burger and sandwich style menu.
very pleasant and friendly staff - got our drink orders promptly and answered our menu questions

we decided to try a salad and sandwich plan - so one of us got the brisket sandwich and I got the salmon sandwich - we shared the goat cheese salad

the cornbread they bring to the table is very tasty with a sweet spicy butter
the salad was freshly prepared and fine - but my last warm goat cheese salad was made with warm goat cheese "patties" - this one was prepared with a less dense goat cheese so more like a warm pudding consistency on top of the salad - good but not great

then out came the sandwiches - the brisket was way too dry for one and the salmon patty was so dry I could not even swallow the small bite I took

they graciously offered a substitute and I am chose the fish tacos - and they were yummy - spicy grilled fish with a fresh salsa on top - served with spanish rice and delicious baked beans as sides
they comped me my meal - so that was thoughtful - and I will probably give them one more try before making a complete judgment -

So go ahead and try it - but select carefully from their menu

oh yeah - great fun way they decorated the old du glace space - all "rocker and roller" style giant portraits on the walls where the large Paris style murals used to be.

Dreams of Tuscany and Venice : MENU IDEAS NEEDED!

WOW!
I knew my CH's would come through - first thing when I get home tonite and am going to work on these ideas!

THANKS SO MUCH CH'rs

Dreams of Tuscany and Venice : MENU IDEAS NEEDED!

So I fell deeply in love with Venetian cooking when I visited there for the first time last year. My pals rave about Tuscany.,,,,,there fore - since it is my turn to think of a theme for our next get together

TADA: Tuscany and Venice.

and I have been doing research - but getting stuck!

Any creative souls out there want to assist this poor soul with outlining options?

We all get together at one house and bring our prepared items - sometimes we finish up at the hosts location......

Any thoughts appreciated!

ALSO affordable WINE suggestions from those regions!

Need Irish or German in UES arnd the 80's for a celebration for Mom

THANKS! I think I will give the Heidelberg a call and head into the city to check it out. Mom loves to reminisce about her Yorkville days and the right spot in that neighborhood may make for a special day!

Need Irish or German in UES arnd the 80's for a celebration for Mom

So Mom grew up on the UES in 80's in Yorkville area (I was born there)

So her 80th is coming up and thinking that a get together of family and friends would be great togo down memory lane....

I know the Heidelberg is there - any updates on whether or not it would be a good spot?

Irish eats would be great as well

Size of group still undetermined - but don't expect it to be more than 50

Any CH's familiar with whats still in the area - - please help me out!

Salt Spring Golf - Clubhouse Bar and Grill

was looking again for a quick place to catch a bite to eat on a Monday nite
alot of places were closed so we were told to try the golf club
it was quiet there - we were the only ones in the place
not much ambiance, but a great view as the sun went down over the course and the hills of salt spring in the distance

was a simple grill style menu - salads, sandwiches, some entrees
the waitress was friendly, accommodating and

we went with soup , salad and sandwiches and were not disappointed

the kids had an awesome grilled cheese sandwich and chicken finger - all disappeared and that grilled cheese sammy looked pretty good to me

I had the onion soup and a roasted garlic Caesar salad with grilled salmon, and a couple of beers they had on tap

my sis had a cheese stuffed phyllo appy and a pulled pork sandwich with some hard cider

all around a nice find, decent food, good prices , pleasant view and great waitress,

so , if you find yourself on salt spring and are looking for a simple , well prepared meal - this is one to keep on a list - again - no ambiance to speak of - this is not fine dining

but you get to look out on the course while you eat or watch your fav game on the tv and eat a decent meal

Oh yeah - I hate fries - but they kids had them on their plate and I reached over to try one as they looked big and crispy - they were very good, and as I said - I HATE FRIES
my sister had a appetizer of

Wonderful mediterranean in Horseshoe Bay, West Vancouver

We had abt an hour before the ferry and this spot is directly across the street from the ferry entrance

We wandered in and sat down to get a quick bite to eat and watch what we could of the March BB playoffs.....

We were not up for full meal because we knew we had to be out of there as soon as the ferry slipped in.

We had their Seafood Chowder, Calamari and Bruschetta - as well as a glass of wine and pint of some ale they had on tap.

It is so extremely rare to come upon a find like this - the Chowder was superb, the Bruschetta was clearly all freshly chopped on a perfectly toasted breads - and woever was back there cooking , knew how to cook calamari - it is hard to not get the usual "chewy" appetizer - but here the calamari melted in your mouth, PERFECTLY COOKED!

The service was outstanding - the hosting and wait staff were so friendly and accommodating - I wanted to sat longer , but the ferry pulled in,

They had a great panoramic view of the ferry harbor and there looked to be a fair number of outside tables that could be a great spot to sit , drink and eat as the sun goes down

If I lived near here - I would be a regular

Hope I get a chance to try them again and recommend it with great gusto!

The spot was called the Bay Moorings and it is actually on the 2nd floor of the building across from the ferry ticket office.

Vancouver Island: Victoria & Mt Washington area

Thanks Anne
Boy the BC chowhound board is slow!

Vancouver Island: Victoria & Mt Washington area

So I am looking for a place in Victoria or up nr Mt Washington towns

Specifically - would ideally like to find a Belgian style bistro - good selection of beers and serving bistro style meals - most notably , Mussels

Is such a place should exist - clue me in

Want to treat my sister and husband to a night out

ALSO

Any suggestions for fav spots to do St Patricks night dinner????

THANKS CH's!

Hilton Head: My eats experience

So overall - we had decidedto do ne nice dinner and then graze the rest of the week.

a BRUNCH:
at the Skull Creek Boathouse. There were 6 of us on a Sunday morning. Greeted pleasantly and seated by a window. Nice Brunch menu with enough to please all the eaters in your groups. I had a Bloody Mary and would give it an above average rating. Had the she crab soup and Crab cake Benedict - poached eggs were perfectly done, loved the crab and spicy sauce. She Crab soup a bit different than the traditional -on the spicy side-which was fine with me and tasty .... All my fellow diners also enjoyed their meals - based on the brunch - would def try back again for a lunch or easy dinner, Boathouse style decorations - you can eat at he bar area and that room is filled with multiple screens with various sports events on

a DRINK:
Down in Sea Pines at the Harbour Town lighthouse - don't remember the name of the spot - but we sat outside to watch the sunset, had a round of drinks and listened to a singer playing an acoustic guitar... overall, solid drink - my bloody Mary was average- but refreshing - nice spot to swing by

a LUNCH:
Went to a spot called SIGNE's - which people raved about.. to get a takeout lunch - well the counter service totally was a nightmare - they got our order wrong - twice - the she crab soup is just ok- the baked goods were HORRIBLE - my ginger cookie tasted like pasty flour - the chocolate chip was equally tasteless. We took back some red velvet cake and a lemon pudding for later. WORST desserts I have had in a long time - school cafeteria baked goods had more taste than these

MORE LATER....

HILTON HEAD - ANY current recs?

Oustanding!
Thanks DaleJ

These recs are exactly what I hoped my fellow CH's would offer up!
I thought it was odd that with all the tourists that must go there - that the HHI threads were so dated...maybe not a big foodie scene there or something....

Anyway - thanks again

Stella Doro's in Old Saybrook - - Reopened??!!!

Thanks - I never got there when it was Ruffinos - but we always would go several times in the winter when it was Stella Doros - odd- no one locally ever was clear on the point that it still had same owners, etc... nothing in shoreline papers I saw.....
anyway - I always enjoyed one particular dish - and hope it is still on the menu - wont get an opportunity till late March - hope it stays open!!!

HILTON HEAD - ANY current recs?

So we will be arriving on Hilton Head on the Friday of the FOOD & WINE week - but are NOT there for that - - just kharma

We would like to see if any HHI Chowhounds are still out there as the HHI threads are pretty old.

Looking for casual dinners - love seafood

Need a place for Sunday Brunch (for 6)

There will be 4 of us first couple of days
and then 6 of us on Monday nite for dinner

None of us want to get all dressed up - but more business casual for dinner and brunch

We will be staying at the Disney Resort if that helps guide us

Hope to get some info!

Stella Doro's in Old Saybrook - - Reopened??!!!

Drove by what had been turned into Ruffino's from Stella Doro last March

Now there is a Stella Doro sign back up?

I am not sure I will have a chance to swing in there to check it out again before the end of March-

so, if anyone gets a chance to swing by there - let us know!

bon appetit

Bethesda visit this week - need some quick current rec's

All the Bethesda threads seem dated.

I am hoping to get a few ideas for eats - staying for a few days and will be stationed at the Hilton Garden Inn - Bethesda

Will have a car - so could venture further than Bethesda
- but would prefer to walk or take the metro - It looks like will be on the red line

Not interested in high end dinners this trip - just some solid pub, bistro or ethnic spots without breaking the bank

THANKS!

Bag of Oranges here and need some ideas.....

Ok New Haven Hounds, tell me about the good pizza in New Haven that is NOT Sally's, Pepe's, Modern or Bar...

Ditto on Alforno's - only beef with them is their service - it ranges all over the place - but mostly adequate to inattentive

Oyster Roasts?

Bagelman and Jen Jen - u guys r killin me.....lol

I drool thinking abt a good oyster roast

Oyster Roasts?

While visiting some friends - I was introduced to the "oyster roast"- sublimely earthy experince.

So my question is this - - short of having to travel to the coastal south or Mid Atlantic - is there somewhere here in New England that may offer this delightful pot of mollusks?

Any Belgian restaurants in Boston area?

will have to chk it out once the beer is there! thanks!
