big disappointment at char 4

apparently the new ham and cheese sandwich is going to be featured in ny mag as one of their signature dishes. my friend ordered the mixed cocktail--a choice that i believe is perfectly appropriate. the point is that, for the price, it wasn't comparable to other cocktails in the area i.e. (prime meats, buttermilk channel etc). for house-smoked meat/bbq fair and a good bourbon selection, i'd rather go to fette sau in wburg.

big disappointment at char 4

went to char 4 with a lot of expectation. our party was particularly excited about the BLT, which has since been removed from the menu.

the bacon appetizer and the ham and cheese gave us a taste of the house-smoke meats, but they were nothing to write home about. beyond extra salt-and-smoke, these dishes were otherwise flavorless. the crab-soup was virtually inedible: thick and mealy, it tasted like someone had added bbq sauce to an otherwise poorly-made chowder.

while the restaurant boosts a great bourbon/whiskey selection the mixed drink that i sampled was more than juice than liquor, and i think i've had better cocktails served up at my local dive-bar for much less the price.

what's the deal?

Korean BBQ or good Korean help!

Going to do Karaoke in K-town for a birthday and was hoping that someone could suggest a place for good Korean food and/or bbq nearby.
What's the word?

Anything delicious in the 30s or something that would be a convenient subway ride away would be much appreciated.

Cheers in advance.

Bars in Brighton Beach?

I always wanted to go here. Have you tried the seafood? Is there an outdoor area?

Mulled Hard Pear Cider

perry? hmm...
this does look good, but seems like it would be really sweet without the honey. i am going to try it tonight.
what's up with the adds on chowhound?

rye infusions? is this a good idea?

thanks for this advice. i just realized she could also do her own cherries for garnish.

rye infusions? is this a good idea?

my roommate wants to infuse rye for her boyfriend's xmas present. it's his favorite liquor and he is a big fan of old fashions.
i have only infused vodka, and i'm wondering if anyone has any pointers or suggestions about infusing rye.
she is considering using anise, but wanted to make a few other "flavors."
i suggested orange peels, cherries, or vanilla bean.

what do you think?
your comments would be much appreciated.

thanks,
o.

red egg

so i finally tried this place. the pork/chive dumplings were delicious as was our noodle dish: flavorful with shrimp and peppers and egg. pan fried vegetable dumplings were okay. skins were thin; filling was juicy.
drinks were good, though not cheap. 11 dollar cocktails should be very well crafted. these were only slightly above average.
my main complaint is the service. at several moments i wondered if we were invisible. when we were finally helped, we were not allowed to think out loud about what we wanted. a friend of mine hesitated for only moment before ordering but the waiter had already darted away telling us to call him back when we were "ready." i think he skipped town after that. later, i attempted to get soy sauce from three different servers.i could have walked back down to canal street and bought my own by the time it finally came out.

i guess i was hoping that this would be a nice place to drink and eat dim sum in the evening. now i feel reluctant to go there again given the service, despite the quality of the food--which i would like to try more of.

Di Fara's on a Saturday evening

bring a bottle of wine. or two. there might be some people lined up, but you should be okay at that time.

Has anyone tried the Vanderbilt yet?

without having much time to post a thorough report, i will say that i was also very disappointed. i hit this place up on saturday night and it was a total zoo: no intimacy, no charm, no service. ultimately we pushed through a throng of what appeared to be imports from tribeca? to seat ourselves. when service finally came it was automatonic. the doll-sized portions were comprised of food that was not-all-that. brussel sprouts were reminiscent of chinese lemon chicken. the few lamb ribs that came on our plate were drowned in a cloyingly sweet sauce. the mussels, however, were excellent, and made me less irritated by the whole experience.
i intend to give this place another shot, as it's in the neighborhood, and perhaps deserves one, but conceptually, i am not sure what's going on. if it's a gastropub why is it the seize of tgi friday's and why is it so precious? more to say on the menu itself later.

Flatbush Farm - really worth the money?

agreed. flatbush farm is not worth the time, and certainly not worth the money. there are much better options in the heights and the slope.

Grimaldi's

i should have done the research. if i had, mabye i would have learned that the atm machine (the only one seemingly within reasonable walking distance of cash-only-grimaldi's) charges a 4.50$ fee. is this even legal?
i have erred it's true. but never again. power to the hounds.

i'm glad to have scratched it off my list.

Grimaldi's

is a bust. It only costs 14 bucks a pie, and it tastes that way.

Did i hit this place on a bad night? My pizza came out within 3 minutes after we had ordered it. I guess this was nice given that we had been waiting for 40 minutes and we were hungry. But, I wondered if they just heated up a pie from a stack they had on hand. In addition, the crust was dry and bland, the sauce was equally as mediocre, and there was only one or two meager basil leaves that were swimming in my cheese.

Okay let me clarify: If I had stopped in for pizza at a random place after an evening of carousing, I would think that I'd run into some damn good pizza. Obviously the place is not run of the mill. However, Grimaldi's just isn't worth all the hype.
I admit that it's fun to eat by the promenade, and it's cheap as hell, and I had a great time, but there is no artful pizza-making here.

Fette Sau...

i totally agree with steve. the sides do suck in a big way. i have liked the the brisket, the pulled pork and the ribs in the past. they also have a great bourbon collection and a decent tap at generally reasonable prices.

"A telltale sign of bullshit is the gratuitous comparison to mass market foods."

don't trust comparisons. especially ones that employ mass market foods. sometimes a sauce tastes like prego even if it isn't.
