Celebratory Dinner in Crystal/Pentagon City: How's the Grill Rm. at the Ritz?

I have a very good reason to take out a business client (although he is also a colleague and a very close friend) for a celebratory dinner in the Crystal City or Pentagon City area. We are settling a deal that we've been working on for two years.

We go out together about 3-4 times a year for nice dinners. In the Crystal City/Pentagon City area we usually go to Mortons, as he is a big red meat guy. We've probably been to that Mortans 4 times.

I'd like to try something different that will still please him and his red meat appetite. He's not adventurous re ethnic food. And I've taken him to Shirlington and he didn't really like the food at Carlyle.

I'm looking at the Grill Room at the Ritz Carlton Pentagon City. There is very little review info on this place. Is service good? How's the food? I'm not looking for a high buzz place as we make our own buzz together-- just a nice dinner w/good steak for him and alternatives for me (I am not too picky). And good drinks and wine, it's a celebration!

Unforgettable cooking class in Oaxaca

Susan Trilling was a guest on the Oaxaca portion of the Mexico segment on the Travel Channel's show "Bizarre Foods" with Andrew Zimmern. I caught this episode a few nights ago, and it is showing frequently in the next few wks. He went to Seasons of My Heart, her cooking school located in Rancho Aurora, and ate guacamole, 'guasintos' (small grubs), 'tlalluda' (a crispy tortilla with beans, guacamole, worms and grasshoppers). Check it out next time it shows.

Anette's BBQ Heaven closed?

For me, Red Hot and Blue doesn't even count. Their BBQ sandwiches are like mush on a bun, and there's no way I want to get used to that. BBQ is different in different areas of the country because of the way it is cooked and served in different areas of the country, Memphis, Kansas City, Cincinatti, Texas, etc. There isn't "a D.C. style BBQ" so I don't understand the comment about getting used to what you can get here. What you get here is whatever style is imported by the people who are cooking the BBQ. I happen to like Texas style BBQ, and you can get that at O'Briens, but it is far to go all the way around the beltway to Rockville or to Sterling to get it, and I wish they had not closed their Springfield location.

Anette's BBQ Heaven closed?

Why oh why is it so hard to find good BBQ in the D.C. metro area. Ever since O'Briens closed in Springfield, it's been downhill for us in this area. O'Brien's Pit BBQ still has locations in Rockville and Sterling. Check their website. That is the BEST BBQ I've had in the D.C. area. They use closed pit BBQ method w/14-16 hrs of cooking time. OMG, it's good, and the prcies are very reasonable.

There is a place in Burke called BBQ World. But it is just ok IMO, along the lines of Annettes.

Dining near Sheraton Centro Historico

Thanks for the post. I tried Cafe Tacuba, as the friend I was traveling with wanted to go. Nice atmosphere w/mariachis on a Fri. night, but the service was really awful and the food ranged from ok (posole) to not good (their "dish w/4 little things"). Service was so disjointed that it was hard to enjoy anything. We had to ask 4 times to get menus after being seated and it just went downhill from there.

I really liked Cafe Popular (on 5 de Mayo) for dinner. It used to be a small diner kind of place (inexpensive good food though) and that old part is still there, but they have bought or rented the space next door and trned that into a more upscale addition. Had wonderful chiles en nogada there, even better than that dish in Puebla.

I'll try your last two recommendations on my next trip.

Where to get Chiles en Nogada, and Taq. Puebla ?

Thank you. That's a nice map feature on the Mundail Cocina page, and I see Chiles en Nogada on the menu. It takes about 45 min. on the El to get there according to the mapping feature. I think I will try that. It sounds like too much work to get to Cemitas Puebla, taking the bus after the El, considering we are only there for a weekend.

Chiles en Nogada or Tacos Arabe in D.C./N. VA area?

Well, I answered my own question, in case anyone is looking besides me. For chiles en nogada, Oyamel. For tacos arabe (or as close as you can get, a good taco al pastor) Taqueria Poblano, two Northern VA locations, one in Alexandria (closed on Tues.) and one in Arlington.

Chiles en Nogada or Tacos Arabe in D.C./N. VA area?

Does anybody know a place that serves the seasonal dish Chiles en Nogada in the D.C. or Northern VA area?

Ditto for tacos arabe?

I had these in Puebla, MX and really would like to have them again if they are available here.

Where to get Chiles en Nogada, and Taq. Puebla ?

I am going to Chicago over Labor Day weekend for 3 days. I would really like to have some Chiles en Nogada if possible, as I have just returned from Puebla and really enjoyed them there. Any ideas?

We are staying at the Westin on Michigan Ave. How far is that from Taqueria Puebla and how would I get there? I'd like to have some more tacos arabe also.

Chiles en Nogada in D.C./Northern VA area?

Has anyone been able to get this dish in the D.C. or Northern VA area in August or Sept. (when it is traditionally served)? I just got back from having it in Puebla and Mexico City and really would like to have it again...

Vegetarian restaurants in Puebla?

Oh yes, there is an EXCELLENT vegetarian restaurant in Puebla! It is wonderful. La Zanahoria (I think the full name is something like Barra Vegetariana La Zanahoria, but everyone calls it La Zanahoria) at 5 Oriente 206. Lots of menu options and everything is very good.

Dining near Sheraton Centro Historico

I know there are other threads on dining in the centro historico but this is a big area. Can't anyone help with what is in short walking distance from the hotel?

Dining near Sheraton Centro Historico

Will be staying at this hotel. Already planning on dinner at El Cardinal, located in the hotel, based on recommendations here and other places. I would appreciate other recommendations for breakfast and dinner in close walking distance to the hotel.

Thanks in advance...

Nora for a large private dinner party?

I am in a jam and need a private room in 2 wks on a Wed. night for a dinner for 50 people, has to be a completely private room (no open walls to other parts of restaurant). Many places w/this kind of room in downtown area are booked, or they are just too stuffy (Willard, Occidental, etc.). Restaurant Nora has a nice private rm, the Gallery Rm., and would be a good match for the person being honored at the dinner. I have eaten at Nora's in the past and always enjoyed it, though I haven't been there in the last 2 yrs.

Has anyone had a private party there in recent history, and if so, how was it for food and service?

Thanks in advance.

Experience with Tuscana West in D.C.?

OK, thanks everyone, I will scratch Tuscana from the list.

It needs to be a completely private room (not a 2nd floor open balcony rm, etc.). I am looking at Nora's now and am going to post to ask if anyone has had a private dinner in the Gallery room there.

Experience with Tuscana West in D.C.?

I am looking at this restaurant for a private party for 50 people. If you have eaten there (particularly if you've had a function this large), what is it like?

I have a dilemma as the dinner is only two weeks away and there is limited availability for private rooms with such short notice.

Thanks in advance for any input on Tuscana West.

Excellent, Reliable, Upscale Italian for 20th Anniversary

I am checking back here at the end of the day and really appreciate all of the replies. I've been to Teatro Goldini three times and, to be honest, was underwhelmed by the service each time. Butterfield 9 is an option; I liked it the two times I was there but did not pay attn. to the vegetarian options, as my daughter wasn't veg. then. I have a luncheon engagement next week in that area and will book it at Butterfield to check it out. The others I have not been to, but I am going to look into each of them. I read some posts here about Notti Bainchi recently when we were trying to find a place to dine before the Kennedy Center, and I really wish I had gone there to check it out instead of the bistro at One Washington Circle (which had terrible service on a very slow Sun. night and the rissoto my daughter had was inedible).

Thanks so much for the recommendations. I will keep checking for further replies. And I will post back on where we end up and how it goes. I really am hoping for a nice night without any regrets for the special occasion.

Bob's 88 Shabu-Shabu

I saw that the Weashington Post did a small piece in the Food section on this restaurant yesterday. So it may be busier in upcoming days due to that publicity.

Excellent, Reliable, Upscale Italian for 20th Anniversary

Thank you Geoff, that is a great suggestion. I have not been there but just looked at the descriptions and reviews online and it looks great. I've never eaten in a dining room that small; I hope it isn't too clautrophobic, but the food sounds very good. Since the menu changes each day, I will call them to discuss vegetarian items.

Any other suggestions?

Excellent, Reliable, Upscale Italian for 20th Anniversary

We live in northern VA, about 8 miles out of D.C. We are celebrating our 20th, and mother and father-in-law are coming from Cape Cod to celebrate with us in mid-Nov. My daughter is vegetarian, so the safest way to go, after a few years experience with this, is Italian. We want upscale and very good service for this event. We thought we might get a limo and do a night tour of the monuments after dinner. My first thought was Galileo, but I see that it is closed, which is a big bummer. I have been to Tosca several times, and have not been impressed with the food, which has consistenly been too salty for us, and ok, but not great, service.

I do not want to leave this dinner disappointed in either food or service. I looked at Maestro at Ritz Tyson (which has a veg. option) but this will be a weekend night and we don't want to pay that price for a tasting menu. Help with other options?
