Chicago Hot Dogs or Greek Places in the West Suburbs?

I know you said you haven't been there nsxtasy and I haven't either but I have heard VERY BAD things about the Greek Village Taverna on Golf Rd. in Schaumburg.

Nutritional Value of Insects?

They may be as big a crawfish, but I'm still not eating them.

Nutritional Value of Insects?

We have an abundance of cicadas in our area right now if you're hungry.

I hear they're high in protein and "taste like walnuts" but I think I'll pass. . .I like to eat, but not THAT much (i.e. going into my backyard and snacking on critters.)

Lately, I have the hardest time deciding where to eat out.

My husband is happy when I'm in this state of indecision. . .it usually means we're staying home and I'm cooking.

Carbonara - cream or no cream?

Don't worry, after the lambasting I got for stating my dislike of fish and cheese together I would never begrudge another Chowhound their personal preference.

It sounds good with the bacon and leek.

Cheers!

Breakfast Chow around Hyatt Regency on E. Wacker?

If you want a BIG chicago-style breakfast, I always recommend Lou Mitchell's. Just cab it from the hotel.

What do Chowhounds do for a living (besides eat of course)?

I'm an ER nurse and a mom of a 9-year old daughter. My husband is in sales.

I'm half Greek, so no explanation for my love of food is needed (all you Greeks out there know what I'm talking about!) and half Swedish. My maternal grandmother was a Swedish immigrant and she was a cook for a lot of the wealthy families that lived in Chicago in the 30's-40's, sadly she passed away before I was born but she passed along her cooking skills to my mom. Growing up both my Yiayia (grandma) and my mom were fantastic cooks and bakers. Growing up in Chicago didn't hurt either. My family and I would go anywhere in this city for good food. The old Maxwell street, Greek Town (of course), Taylor Street, Pilsen, Chinatown. . .anywhere! I love Chicago.

I love to eat, love to cook, love to read cookbooks and magazines about cooking and food. I can spend hours (not necessarily $$$$) browsing through Fox & Obel and Whole Foods.

Great thread!!

Harrison's Poultry - Available for sale in Chicago?

Hi, I was just at Harrison's the other day (you're right they do have the BEST poultry and eggs) as far as I know they do not carry it in any Chicagoland stores. You have to go right to the source in Glenview.

Carbonara - cream or no cream?

No cream. No salmon. elizard, I caught a lot of heat on CH a few months ago when I brought up mixing fish and cheese (i don't like it either) good luck.

No comments on Le Francais ?

Funny NDJ, I was thinking the same thing when I heard about the closing on the local news this morning.

"a certain bakery in Wisconsin"

I'm not sure if this is the "certain bakery" that the writer is referring to but the Door County Bakery in Sister Bay WI is unbelievable. They are famous for their "corsica loaf" and they have an outrageous peanut butter cookie that I cannot recall the name of. All of their breads and cookies/pasteries are to die for.

Bon Appetit...hit or miss?

I also received a subscription to Bon Appetit a few years ago and I did not renew. Some of the recipies were fantastic while others were just blah for the amount of work/ingredients. The Epicurious website is very nice and user friendly. I love the "my recipe box" feature.

Everyday Food is a GREAT magazine. Nothing I've made out of any of the issues has turned out to be a miss.

Edison Park

I second EDL once again! The Park Ridge Farmer's Market is very nice -- we're there almost every Saturday in the summer/early fall.

Also, there is a Whole Foods in Sauganash which is not far from you at all (maybe 10-15 minutes) at Peterson and Cicero right off the Edens.

At what point do you drink your beer room temperature?

What is the problem with me liking my beer ice cold? Yes, to me the colder the better. If you want to stick your beer in the microwave to bring out its true character and enhance its subtleties and all that crap go ahead. Just leave me alone while I enjoy my frosty beer (which I can taste just fine) and catch a buzz.

At what point do you drink your beer room temperature?

In reply to Josh and HeBrew, I do drink what I consider to be good beer. Stella Artois and currently Bell's Brewery Oberon Ale are curently gracing the shelves of me refrigerator, soon to be spending a chilly 20 minutes in my freezer before I enjoy them.

Please do not presume I am drinking Coors Light simply becasue I prefer my beer icy cold boys.

Edison Park

I agree with EDL, Tony's Italian Deli on Northwst Hwy has GREAT stuff, and Morningfield's in Park Ridge is a pretty good specialty store; Devon Ave Meats located inside of Morningfields has great meat and the guys behind the counter are very helpful. Trader Joe's has opened in Park Ridge too.

Zia's Trattoria on Northwest Hwy. has good Italian food. Nam Viet, about a block away has very good Vietnamese food and (although I haven't been there in a long time) Don Juan's across the street has good Mexican.

In Park Ridge, Venus is good for Chinese. Siam Thai is good. There's also a Lou Malnati's carry out store in Park Ridge on Northwest Hwy. Maki sushi has decent stuff. The Pickwick is an old school coffee shop, some of their soups are very good and the rice pudding is to die for (no raisins though -- which is how I prefer it.) Hay Caramba (spelling?) can be hit or miss for Mexican food.

That's all I can think of for now. Niles has some hidden gems too.

Welcome to the neighborhood!

At what point do you drink your beer room temperature?

I put my beer in the freezer for 20-25 minutes before drinking. The colder the better.

Best Chicago Steakhouses?

Gibson's is the best without a doubt. If you want a true, Chicago style steakhouse Gibson's is your place, I promise you will NOT be dissappointed.

your favorite broccoli dish?

Steamed broccoli with a little bit of olive oil and Meyer lemon juice squeezed over is simple but yummy. I've taken to roasting broccoli lately too which gives it a whole new taste and texture.

beef stew and...

Egg noodles with a little bit of butter and chives.

Best Summer Iconic Food Places?

Chicago: Mario's Italian Ice stand on Taylor street

Mother/Daughter foodie weekend - where to?

For a daytime activity, my mom and I can spend hours grocery shopping/browsing at Fox & Obel. The cafe has good breakfast and lunch too.

Looking for Chow in the Land Beyond O'Hare

Barnaby's on Golf Road just west of Roselle has GREAT thin crust pizza and Italian Beef. If you like spicy food thier "pizza luis" is awesome. It's got hot giardinara, sausage and pepperoni. . .sooo goooood!

Food Odors at Work

Tell them to suck it up. If I have to smell their gross burnt microwave popcorn, they'll just have to deal with my "lunchtime odors."

Pastry / Baked Good / Confections

I have to second Sweet Mandy B's for cake. We've gotten cakes there for Christmas and just a few weeks ago for my daughter's birthday party and they are always wonderful.

My mom is Swedish so a trip to the Swedish bakery around Christmas time is a must. Anything with marzipan there is so good it's almost a crime and their limpa (Swedish bread) is very good too, espcially if you go across the street to Wickstrom's deli and get their meatballs and make a cold Swedish meatball sandwhich with a little butter. Uff Da!

Costco- fresh ground beef burger patties good? [moved from General Chowhounding Topics]

Hi! Are you talking about the BIG, thick ones with the indentation in the middle? They are very good and always very fresh. They're always a hit at our cookouts but you do have to like really thick burgers. . .my husband does not like them for this reason, he prefers a thinner hamburger but he's weird. I recommend them! Enjoy!

Teacher Appreciation Day

I just made the cake version of this Coconut Cake with Cream Cheese frosting for a friends birthday and it was out of this world! It got RAVES all around and it didn't have a "packaged" taste at all.

what kind of snack at 11pm

Right on. Cold pizza is good around 11:00. A big greasy burrito tastes like heaven between 2-4am. Steak and eggs, rye toast with butter and black coffee between 4-6am is nirvana. Oh! Those were the days!!! Back to the topic at hand, cold pizza before bed is yummy. . .particularly post-cocktailing.
