ISO Business Dinner Fremont

Thanks for the recommendations! Melanie made a good point that an American steakhouse experience might be something interesting and different, so I decided to try Spin A Yarn.

It's an attractive and comfortable space, traditional steakhouse decor with lots of wood and white tablecloths. The place wasn't super busy but not empty either, basically what you'd expect for a Monday night. Service was friendly and professional.

We started with the soup of the day, cream of broccoli, then had the rib eye steak with mashed potatoes and mixed vegetables, and a Grgich Hills Zinfandel. My colleague ordered the same-- not sure whether it was because he didn't know what to order or not, but he seemed to enjoy the meal.

Everything was fine; the rib eye was cooked to order (medium rare), the vegetables were fresh and nicely seasoned, and portions were generous. Overall, it was a solid steakhouse experience and it totally fit the bill for what I needed. Although nothing blew me away, I wouldn't hesitate to go again for business, or for a special occasion non-ethnic restaurant in the Fremont area.

I'll be meeting a European business colleague in Fremont next week and taking him to dinner. He travels frequently to London and India so my preference is to not go to an Indian restaurant, but I'm open to it if necessary. Minimal requirements are: good food, preferably not a dive or strip mall, preferably within a 10-mile radius of Fremont area. The bottom line is, he's taken me to some excellent places in Europe, and I'd like to do the same, but within that 10-mile radius. I've been combing the archives and starting to think this is mission impossible!

Can You Take Leftovers Home from a Party?

When I was a kid and we went to eat at my parents' friends' homes, they used to routinely dole out leftovers at the end of the evening, and my parents did the same. Maybe it was because the dinners weren't formal affairs, but whether it was Thanksgiving, Christmas, someone's birthday, or some other celebration, leftovers were shared. I still have happy memories of those times. Now that I'm an adult with my own dinner parties, I've wanted to do the same, so it's always puzzled me when my friends seemed reluctant to accept my offers of food. I wondered if my cooking was truly awful and everyone was simply too polite to tell me. On the rare occasion when someone expressed an interest in leftovers, I've been elated.

Humoring Picky Kids

It seems to me that much of the problem with kids' "picky palates" is actually one of not enforcing good eating habits and manners.

My parents are both immigrants; my father grew up on a small farm. When he sat down to a meal, there was no discussion of not liking something, because there was literally nothing else to eat. They never went hungry, but whatever was on the table was abundant and in season, so it was going to be on the menu for a awhile. He learned to eat everything with gusto and gratitude.

I was born and raised here, but my parents used the same tactic as if we were living in the old country. If I didn't like something or didn't finish something, I wasn't forced to eat it at the time. The item was simply put away and nothing else was offered. The next time I was hungry, I had to finish the other item before I could eat anything else, because my parents don't believe in waste. To be sure, I liked some dishes more than others but there was no battle of the wills at the table, and being picky and unappreciative about food was never tolerated.

Now I'm a chowhound. :o)

Hoss, the plan is to take the food to Santa Cruz to eat there. Thanks for the falafel suggestion, ceekskat; I love a good falafel and personally, a semi-soggy filling (after 30-40 mins.) doesn't faze me.

I'm hoping to give the group a few choices ... any other ideas?

Good takeout lunch in San Jose?

Our group of 18 - 20 people is heading from Oakland to Santa Cruz this Thursday (5/15) and I'm in charge of finding a good takeout place in the SJ area to pick up lunch for everyone. The requirements are: good food, not too expensive (approx. $10/each), not too far from the freeway (Hwy. 17, 101-280 interchange or thereabouts). We'll eat just about anything as long as it's tasty.

Help, please-- I'm not familiar with the South Bay! Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

Robert, you're right. I just called and it IS an Opentable glitch (which Cafe Rouge was unaware of). Right now the only way to make reservations is by phone: 510/ 525-1440.

If you click on "Reservations" on the Cafe Rouge website, it sends you to a place called "Cafe Pfister," same street address as Cafe Rouge. Since Agent 510 ate lunch at Cafe Rouge just yesterday, I'm assuming that nothing's changed yet; does anyone know what's up?

Catering to Kids Ruins Them for Life

If he doesn't have to eat what he doesn't like, junior may be missing a lesson in dealing with adversity. After all, he'll still have to learn school subjects that he finds uninteresting, do tasks that he objects to and put up with people he considers irritating.

Also, many cultures feel it's rude not to eat their food. It's not exactly ideal if you have to stick to McDonald's when not eating at home, and you may be setting your child up for embarrassment if he can't enjoy the home-cooked meal at his classmate's house.

I wonder what kind of message is being sent to kids that don't have to eat what they don't like. It seems that catering to junior's finicky palate is the first step down a slippery slope.

best Shanghai cuisine restaurant in the entire SF Bay Area

Daveena, "sung" was what came to mind when I saw the description of the prawn dish as well. Seems like sung can be made from just about any protein source (in addition to pork I've also had fish sung and soy bean sung) and it's always sweet and salty, not very meaty--fish sung isn't even really fishy. Wonder if that was it?

I've been to Shanghai Gourmet in the Pacific East Mall many times. Don't know how high it rates in the Bay Area, but food is usually satisfying, the menu is fairly extensive and my mom (from Shanghai) likes it. Just stay away from the leaden yo tiao. Btw, Gary Soup, they serve crispy fried eel.

Is It OK to Use the Handicapped Restroom?

I agree with Mr. Schmokel. If there is a disabled person present, then he/she should absolutely get first dibs on the handicapped stall. However, it doesn't make sense for someone to be dancing the Two-Toe Jig outside an empty stall on the off-chance that someone handicapped *might* show up.

As for waiting 10 mins. for moms with their kids to exit a stall, we've all had to do that. The difference is if they're in a handicapped stall and you're disabled, you get the stall next after they come out. The rest of us may have a dozen more people ahead of us in line.

Ever get comp'ed for service faux pas or weirdness

When we were around 19 years old and in college, a friend and I went to lunch at Bob's Big Boy. I devoured my hamburger but my friend, a picky eater, didn't eat much of her chili. I tasted it and it was ok; nothing special, but typical diner chili. The waitress asked if anything was wrong with the chili and my friend said she didn't like it. Then the waitress asked if she could bring her something else from the menu; my friend said no. So my friend's meal and drink were comped! We were both surprised-- no, shocked. Class act.

Rio Grande coffee is one of the best deals in town. I regularly buy the French Roast in whole bean form. The beans aren't roasted as evenly as, say, Peet's or some of the higher-end brands. (In fact, I tend to be more of a Peet's girl in terms of my likes, but I'm such a caffeine freak I can't afford the bushels of Peet's I need to support my coffee habit.) Instead I buy Rio Grande, freshly grind each batch and use a coffee press. Once brewed the coffee is tasty, fairly rich and smooth; definitely a good value.
