Greenmarket Rant

Thanks for all the feedback and helpful suggestions.
After going to the Union Square Greenmarket this morning, I realize I had forgotten how great it is in the middle of the summer.

Greenmarket Rant

Time was, I used to love going to the Union Square and other greenmarkets and did a lot of shopping there. It seemed like a win-win proposition - we urbanites got to buy directly from the farmers at somewhat reduced prices and the farmers got to sell to the public at higher than wholesale prices. But the prices in some (although not all) cases have gone up to the point where I feel that we city slickers are being taken advantage of. So far this season, the cherries and corn have been a disappointment and more expensive than better-tasting (admittedly non-local) cherries and corn at Whole Foods. I sometimes wonder if the markets even really exist to sell at retail - are they really there to sell at some sort of discount to restaurants and then in order to get the tax write-off by end-of-day donations to City Harvest? And then there are the baked goods - is there really any reason that baked goods from New Jersey made with margarine should have a spot in a greenmarket when there are such good bakeries nearby having to pay Manhattan rents? Please feel free to tell me I'm wrong - I hope I am.

Whitefish Salad

Agreed, less than appealing although I wonder if the ingredients of most commercial mayonnaises are much better.

Whitefish Salad

That's good to know. I think the Blue Hill Bay sold by Acme in Greenpoint is the same as the one sold at Costco.

Whitefish Salad

A friend from SF who loves whitefish salad is visiting next week. Any opinions on whether I can do better than buying a big tub of Blue Hill Bay at Costco (which I imagine is available countrywide). I know many love the whitefish/salmon salad at Russ and Daughters but I've found that I prefer just whitefish.

vegan streusel recipes

I've made the Chow Easy Apple Crisp several times, using either whole wheat pastry flour or spelt flour instead of all purpose flour and Earth Balance instead of butter and thought the streusel (the whole recipe actually) was great.

Thanks so much for the heads-up on the vegan tikka masala! I hadn't seen it but will certainly look for it.

Best not-"third wave" espresso/coffee?

I really thought I was the only one who found the new third wave coffee way too acidic. This really came home to me last summer during a business trip to Miami when I had a number of cafes con leche made with Cafe Pilon at a little stand in the lobby of the Miami Center and found I enjoyed them more than the coffee I had at highly recommended new style espresso place. That being said, I really love the Americanos at Oslo and La Colombe.

Potato & Cheese Pierogi

Those look great! Just wanted to make sure that the amount of oil listed in the dough (1/2 tsp.) was correct.

white spelt flour

In case you ever find yourself in the East Village, it turns out that Commodities has organic white spelt flour in the bulk bins for $1.89/lb.

Foods of India on Lex

I used to go to Foods of India for spices and basmati rice but the store now seems to have undergone a name change and is no longer strictly vegetarian. It always seemed that the spices there were particularly good quality and, if I recall correctly, they had basmati rice from their own farm in India. Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions for a store with comparable quality and prices?

white spelt flour

As far as I know, Fairway has the VitaSpelt white spelt flour. Whole Foods (at least the Union Square store) used to carry white spelt flour but now only has whole spelt flour.

Sahadi's Open Today (Sunday)

I just thought I'd mention that Sahadi's is open today until 6 (because of Atlantic Antic and the only Sunday all year when they're open) and that when I was there at about 1 it wasn't crowded inside and I didn't even need to take a ticket for the olives/nuts/dried fruit section.

Vegetarian / vegan recs? (downtown)

Malai Marke also has a vegan section of their menu. Had the aloo gobi which was delicious. Otto has really good vegetarian dishes as well.

Soy Curls

Just wondering if you've used the chicken-type seasoning Butler Foods sells along with the Soy Curls. (I'm planning on placing an order for Soy Curls and have been wondering whether I should get the seasoning as well.)

The Hundred-Foot Journey: restaurant-themed Helen Mirren film

I saw the movie and thought Scott's review was spot on. The movie totally lost me when, contrary to the way Indian food is cooked, old spices were trotted out for an understandably sentimental reason and then used in cooking. It was way too schmaltzy for me.

Does anyone know if the NYC Costcos have wild king salmon? (I'm thinking of joining because wild king salmon is so expensive when it's available at other places.) Thanks.
