Waiters On Wheels - The Thread
We tried to order Izzies' from WOW a few weeks ago and they no longer deliver on Fridays... frustrating after picking out an entire meal. I didn't mind the long wait for the convenience factor until I talked to a friend who works at a WOW restaurant. He said the orders typically sit ready to be picked up usually for more than 45 minutes. Have you tried www.delivery.com -- free delivery and the website remembers your previous order!
I need a boost in the late afternoon!
Lately I find I'm getting sleepy at my desk in the afternoon. I get 8 hours of sleep each night, eat breakfast and tend to have a healthy, not too heavy lunch. My job is plenty stimulating and I have a window that opens in my office, so it's not due to stale air. Any recommendations for a snack or drink that will keep my forehead from hitting the desk? Note: I have a low tolerance for caffeine and am not a huge fan of chocolate (actually, I don't have much of a sweet tooth.) Thanks!!

$100 Williams-Sonoma Gift Card - - What would you buy?
The DH and I were given a gift card for the holidays. Our kitchen is stocked with the basics in cookware, bakeware and appliances, as well as dishes and glasses of all sorts. I'm wondering this, Chowhounds, if you were given this gift, what would you buy? I was thinking about the Russell Hobbs Immersion Blender ($99.95.) Look forward to hearing from you!
Anthony Bourdain's Cooking Show
I'm sure that's how he can eat the most disgusting things... dead taste buds!!
Ice Cream Bombe?
I thank you... and more importantly, my husband, thanks you SO much!
Ice Cream Bombe?
My DH and I have been invited to a potluck NYE party and he wants to make an "Ice Cream Bombe" dessert. He describes it as molded in a stainless steel bowl with pound cake soaked in liqueur as the outer layer, then inner layers of ice cream, sauces (fudge? compote?) etc. I assume it's done with several bowls and parchment or wax paper and chilling between layers, but I'm not sure. Does anyone have a recipe with good details for constructing such a thing? Thanks for your help!!
Do you ever have enough cookbooks?
I just joined this club www.thegoodcook.com

Say Goodbye to Hawthorne Lane
That's how I felt when I first read the article this morning... sort of nostalgic. I had some really great meals there too, mostly I remember the fresh shellfish on cracked ice. But it seems it was time for a change.
Starbucks downward slide?
Here's a hillarious (but somewhat long) article about basketball and the growth of Starbucks by Sherman Alexie...

Say Goodbye to Hawthorne Lane
Just read in the Food section of today's Chronicle, Hawthorne Lane will be closing on Christmas and re-opening in 2007 as Two, a lighter-hearted, more casual and cheaper place... The chef/owner David Gingrass will remain and has designed the new menu after the advice of Yelpers, in an effort to reach a younger crowd.
Does Trader Joe's have holiday items in stock yet?
I was at TJs in San Francisco over the weekend and they had TONS of holiday stuff. Lots and lots of candy and cakes and little trees and poinsettas. I bought a big dark pink poinsetta for $6!!
Delivery in Pacific Heights?
Hmmmm...now that you mention it, you may be right! Sorry about that!
Delivery in Pacific Heights?
We LOVE Cocina Poblana! In fact, had it delivered last night. Their chicken mole and fajitas are wonderful, as are the burritos! The only down side is they don't really have any appetizers and it's a $20 minimum for delivery. Most dishes are under $10. And sometimes they don't have a driver, so call and ask before you have your heart set on it.
Also good options:
Eliza's - Chinese (at California/Baker)
India Oven (Fillmore & Geary?)
Ten-Ichi - great sushi, Japanese www.tenichisf.com
Good books with food as a key element?
Yes! I love reading MFK Fisher - her descriptions are wonderful. I just read "Julie & Julia" about a woman in NY who spends a year cooking all of the recipes in Julia Child's "Mastering the Art of French Cooking". It was pretty fun at times...
How do you use Sea Salt?
Sea Salt seems to be everywhere these days... or maybe I'm just late on picking up the trend. I'm curious, how do other CHs use it? Looking forward to your creative feedback!
Bakery / store-bought Thanksgiving pies - how was yours?
On Wednesday afternoon, I bought the last pumpkin pie at Tart to Tart on Mission & 3rd. It was delicious! Real pumpkin flavor, nice spices, flaky buttery crust. But it should have been for $18!!

Seller's Market Crab Melt - Disappointing...
I just had the crab melt from the new SM at 595 Market. I work in the building and it's my 2nd visit (had the BBQ chicken sandwich they day after they opened and loved it!) But today, not so much. I ordered it without the pepperjack, just cheddar, not wanting to detract from the crab flavor, which they advertise as fresh daily. I was thinking with dungeness season just starting it would be really good... but it was fishy tasting, the dressing was vinegary/watery which made the barely browned sourdough even more soggy. For $10.80 (w/tax) pretty disappointing. I won't order it again.
So I guess I'll stick with BBQ chicken next time.... or maybe the grilled ham & cheese, has any had it?
Where to get a awesome crab lunch?
Sam's Grill on Belden/Bush. Delish crab salad with just shredded iceberg, tomatoes, hard boiled egg (in either red wine vinegar dressing or Louie) and a huge clump of fresh crab in the center!
fish and chips
After all this fish 'n chip talk, I was seriously craving it! I went for drinks after work at the Irish Bank (Mark Lane between Bush & Kearny) yesterday and ended up sharing an order of fish 'n chips with a coworker - the fries were just okay, nothing spectacular, but the fish was delish! There were 3 good sized pieces, crispy coating, flaky white fish and perfect tartar sauce (although I mostly used malt vinegar.) $10.50
