Which recipes (and ingredients) are, in your opinion, over hyped?
I love wilted argula on prociutto pizza. Heaven! oops I'm supposed to complaining. ... I don't really care for Risotto either, but that is a dish...

I love Fennel, I have a recipe with swiss chard and fennel that is so delicious...I have to find it....
ISO Pecorino near FIDI?
I want to buy some good cheese for carbonara and was hoping to get some at lunch time (walking) so somewhere in FIDI or North Beach would be best.
Looking for a cake
Many years ago I babysat for an Estonian family - on a rare occasion they made Dobos- with seven layers, but it seemed a task. So commercial baker may well make something similar, but less delicate and time-consuming......
Good Luck finding something close!
BTW I love Crixa's Lemon cake......
Chicken Parmesan Oakland/East Bay
I like the one at Pasta Pomodoro. I rarely order it myself, but I've tasty it and the cheese has always been very crisp (and lots of it....).
Barbara's fishtrap in Half Moon Bay..
I usually take my touristy self to Sam's Chowder house. I love sitting on the deck eating all the cliche chowder house favorites.... and I must say that Sam's Chowder and Lobster Rolls are better than Phil's in Moss Landing, but I love Phil's location (no view, but a real beach just steps away...)
REVIEW w/ pics: Dinner at Patio Filipino
My favorite thing here is usually the sisig and the Halo-Halo which at Patio Filipino is served with Ube Ice Cream in a coconut shell. You can scoop the young coconut from the shell as you eat.

If you like the seabass try going to Alameda's East Ocean for dinner. While not cheap either you get a much larger portion of I think Black Cod -- it is pink on the outside like Char Siu, but does not taste like it. It melts in your mouth.

Burger and Fries in SF, $10?
I've been to Grumpy's too and the Irish Times both are better than Bistro Burger.

Seeking unique breakfast in San Francisco (see wish list)
Yes. I love filipino breakfast. Garlic rice, fried eggs, longanisa, chopped fresh tomato and jalepeno and seasoned vinegar for dipping. I use siracha too...
Chinatown: Garden Restaurant reopens.
Sadly they lost a lot of customers, by having cheap lunch specials for a couple weeks and then abruptly dropping them. Then they raised prices shrank portions and discontinued breakfast for lunch.
I now see they are advertising again the cheap specials, but a lot of local workers became disenchanted by the changes.... I really miss the char siu and scrambled egg... I tried to order it again and it was completely different.
Sonoma Report
I do not have a food comment, but my hippie mom used to go out to Juanita's from Santa Rosa. I remember as a child hearing snippets about a huge woman, nude bubble baths, chickens on the property and a fire. So this just brought back a little nostalgic moment. We kids were never invited....
Burger and Fries in SF, $10?
I work in FIDI so have had a lot of differnt burgers for lunch. The Irish Bank and believe it or not Buckhorn have decent hamburger fry combos near the $10 mark.
Avoid Bistro Burger and I don't care for Burgermeister....

Thanks for the lead.

Planning a BBQ in August and would like to marinate up some Kalbi or other similar beef cuts. I know a Mexican Grocery store in the East Bay that has a good butcher counter and a good selection of beef, but was wondering if there are other recommendations.

I found the Asian Markets have a lot of drinkable cereal beverages that my grandmother used to like....basically packets of cereal, milk, sugar in a semi-powdered form that you just mix with hot water. They are sweet, creamy and warm and a calorie laden alternative to tea. They are usually sold in the same aisle as tea. And called Cereal Beverage. Atole or champurrado are Mexican versions of the same idea. I love oat Atole with cinnamon.
Best Coffe Places in San Francisco
Blue Bottle (I 2nd, 3rd, 4th the opinion or whatever number we are on)....
I would also mention near the Presidio that the Grove is nice place to chill with a cup of coffee. They have good bacon too, but it is not "connoisseur coffee" place. Also I think the ambience adds to the coffee experience out in the Chrissy Field buildings (headed to Fort Point) its called the Warming Hut.

T-Rex's Wednesday BBQ Buffets
Yeah and its smart to let people fill up on starches but they should at least be seasoned or sauces available to make them tasty.... Sweet potato and slaw are pretty hard to mess up.
30 Year Old Husband & Wife in San Fran for 3 Days / 4 Nights
For cupcakes I like CupKates (you have to visit off-the-grid on Friday nites to catch them - look at Facebook for updates) or Kara's is good but of what I've tried I think Kara's does lemon best.....
Cafe Madeline has good cake too, but its not super creative or unusual..... try Specialty's for hot chocolate chip cookies....they bake them fresh all day.

Thanks, I just buy the hot chocolate and leave and have only had the chocolate for free, but its adjacent to the ferry building and definitely good cocoa.
With only 4 days in San Francisco, should we spend a half day checking out Berkeley?
I love eating in many places in the East Bay. The key is they are coming over for a short 4 day trip. I have lived in SF and in the East Bay since 1985 and work in the financial district and I am still finding cool places to eat and visit in SF. I would just not send a visitor to Berkeley within that kind of timeframe.... (craving some Arizmendi pizza as I type....)

With only 4 days in San Francisco, should we spend a half day checking out Berkeley?
I love Berkeley and used to live there, but with four days I would also stay in SF (maybe use the "extra" day in GG Park and CA Academy type stuff...). You should though BART over early and maybe grab a cocktail before dinner in Oakland.
As for SANDWICHES my favorite right now is Barbacco's porchetta or lamb sandwich (duck sadly not on the menu right now) or a Banh Mi.

Crispy Orange Beef? East Bay??
Hmmm I have the same memory, but can't put my finger on it.... I usually eat chinese at lunch in the city so don't get it often in the East Bay anymore. Generally I like East Ocean in Alameda so it could have been there but I actually think it may have been at Harbor View Chinese...
