Camellia Grill

It was glowing reports like yours and many others that took me to Camellia Grill with great anticipation and excitement. I loved it before I went there. And expected to love it more when I finally got to eat there.
We all have different tastes. For my taste, a burger patty with no seasoning at all, a bun that could have been nicely grilled...but was barely warmed...is bland. A hamburger steak with no seasoning at all, no gravy, no onions....a big patty of totally unseasoned meat...is bland and not what one would expect when ordering a hamburger steak...anywhere.
I'm glad you love Camellia Grill. I really wanted to love it too.

Help build our dream restaurant weekend in New Orleans. Please.

I had dinner at K-Paul's on the spur of the moment in June. We were looking to leave Harrah's to eat. We called K-Paul's to see if we needed a reservation and ask about the dress code. Didn't need a reservation that night. They mentioned that flip flops were not allowed. One of our group was wearing leather flip flops...we had not even thought about eating at K-Paul's before leaving the house. Anyway, they said the flip flops would be okay. We went. Had a great meal. There were lot's of people casually dressed.

If we had planned to eat at K-paul's, we would have all dressed up. I'm thankful that they welcomed us. We had a memorable meal.

New Orleans Newbie

I finally ate at K-Paul's in June, with 3 friends. We all thought the food, minus the desserts, was fantastic. Service was great. Two of us ordered from the specials @$32 for app, entree, and dessert. Both desserts were really bad. But the app and entree was worth the price paid.

The gumbo is the best I have eaten in any restaurant. My steak was great. And even the mashed potatoes were just wonderful. I will return as often as I can.

Camellia Grill

I finally made it to Camellia Grill. Sorry to say that it was a disappointment. Our server was very friendly. I don't see myself going back for the food.

My friend and I ordered burgers. The buns were put on the grill, warmed a little, but not grilled or browned. The meat had no seasoning at all. I watched closely as several omelets were prepared. No salt, pepper or any type of seasoning was added. The bacon was good and generous, 3 strips. My granddaughter ordered the hamburger steak plate. The meat was a large hamburger patty...not one bit of seasoning, no onions, no gravy. Could not have been more blah. The fries were frozen plain, plain fries with not one grain of salt.

We all ordered the freeze. They were good.

Set Menus or Specials with Great Value for Money

I had dinner at K-Paul's Friday night. My friend and I ordered the 3 course special @$32. Good price for K-Paul's. The food was wonderful...minus the desserts. The desserts were pretty terrible. But the first 2 courses were worth the price paid.

"Rules" at Central Grocery

I don't recall ever having "service with a smile" at Central Grocery. But I hardly notice, because the muff is sooooo good. I have not been able to find a muff that hits the spot like the Central Grocery muffaletta.

Cornbread: the North vs. South

I'm from Texas, now living near New Orleans. We have always put sugar in our cornbread...except when making cornbread for dressing.

World's Worst Products - Canned whole chicken

My ex loved stuff like that. He considered canned mackerel...all kinds of canned fish, a treat...the fishier, the better. I hated even the smell. But to each his own.

World's Worst Products - Canned whole chicken

This post brought back a memory that gave me a giggle a few years ago. I was watching a friend's children. My friend was a very busy woman. I knew she didn't cook much, but didn't understand how little, until this incident happened. I was preparing a fresh, whole chicken to cook for supper. My friend's daughter came into the kitchen. Her eyes were wide with interest. "What is THAT!?" I told her it was a chicken. "Really!!???...Our chicken always comes out of a can!!!"

Cast Iron Dutch Ovens - which brand best?

I have some non-enameled old cast iron that has been in storage. I'm ready to clean it and start using it. How do you clean your cast iron?

Cleaning cast iron cookware

Thanks for the info. I just inherited several cast iron pans. They appear to be well seasoned, but have been in storage. There are some cobwebs...and no telling what else. I wasn't sure how to proceed. Your advice sounds good. Thanks!

HELP! English girl from Hong Kong looking for good food $20 or under!

Had Popeyes spicy friday night before we evacuated. It was good and spicy. I have ordered spicy and have been given the regular bland chicken a few times. Could have happened to you. But that mistake should be rare...and not the usual.
Churchs has amped up their spicy. I tried it one time and really liked it. I think it is spicier than Popeyes now.

Best food buys at Sam's club.

I love Sam's but don't have time to write much right now. I would like to give an example of how food prices are rising. I have bought the 15 lb bag of large baking potatoes for @ $5.88 seems like for years. About one month ago the price had jumped to $9.88. Yesterday the price was $11.88. I just walked on by.....

Willie Maes closed again

Last week I saw a printed ad for Willie Maes. It listed their hours as Mon - Fri: 11AM - 3PM. Looks like they need to change the hours listed on their door....unless there was an error in the ad.

Quiznos just jacked up prices and reduced sizes

I had a Quiznos large Italian sub tonight...$7.99. It was huge...so much meat I could hardly get my mouth around it. I felt my money was well spent. The prices haven't gone up here...yet.

Carrabba's Italian Grill

I love Carrabba's. We have to drive an hour to get there...but it's worth the trip. We sometimes order extra meals to bring home. Order something from the grill. I always order pollo rosa maria. It's great. The shrimp scampi is great. Love their desserts. Their bread is wonderful. I think their prices are very reasonable.

Quiznos vs. Subway

I had a Quiznos Italian sub tonight. It had so much meat on it that I could barely get my mouth around it. It was great. Love their Italian dressing. Felt that my money was well spent.
Subway....had not been there for years....but stopped in because my grandson needed to use the restroom. Decided I should buy something. Ordered the Italian sub. Was surprised when they asked me what kind of dressing...on an Italian sub?...Italian!! Was informed that they don't have Italian dressing. Very wierd to me. There was hardly any meat on the sub....I will always choose Quiznos over Subway.

Help! How do I cook eggs over easy without breaking the yolks?

This is the tried and true southern Granny's way of cooking over easy. Use a good cast iron or nonstick frying pan. Fry enough bacon to give 1/4 inch or more of grease. You could add some oil, but Granny used pure bacon grease. With your pan heated to medium, gently place your egg in the pan. Let it cook a few seconds to set the bottom of the egg. Then use a spatula to flip the hot grease over the yolk. You control how done the top of the egg is...no broken yolks.

Walking Distance in Garden District

If you do go to Zea's...I think their grits are great. I always get grits as a side. I had shrimp & grits the other day. It was really good. The grits are so rich and creamy. Didn't care for their cheesecake.

cici's pizza????

I say try CiCi's. What have you got to lose...5 bucks? I like the salad bar. It has been fresh when I've been there. The pizza has been decent basic pizza. They will make you a fresh pizza with whatever toppings you want on it. If you are taking children out to eat, it's not only good...but great.

trip to NOLA March 7-10

I finally made it to Chez Pierre today. I agree with Hungry Celeste. The chocolate cream pie is great. Had one there and took some home. The sour dough bread is very good and inexpensive.
