Hell's Kitchen - Very Disappointing
to mojoeater...never never cry...EVER....not a man and definately not a woman (and yes its worse if a woman cries..kitchens can be sexist so suck it up)....go cry in the fridge...locker room or on the toilet...never never let them see you cry..hang on until later...sure we can say its stressful...but still..never!
opinions on the "Top Nine" influential chefs in Toronto
it was in the globe and mail i think....................
The perfect Foodie Wedding--what would you do?
"people who attend weddings go to party" AMEN!!! Being a groom once myself....I began to feel pretty guilty about all the gifts we were getting from all the pre wedding get togethers...some people just go over the top when it comes to giving and expecting gifts...We wanted our friends there...and we wanted them to have a great time...we decided it was going to be more about our family and friends celebrating WITH us, than FOR us....we wanted good food (it didn't have to be amazing) and booze and fun and less about the "dress" and the "loot " we were getting. We had an open bar, we had great music...pretty good food and everyone had a blast. We didn't open any gifts until 6 weeks later...when we came back from Italy...20lbs heavier and happy!!
Afternoon Tea at King Edward Hotel
really...Tea and Sympathy in NYC....I'm going there next week..tell me about it.
Unpretentious. In Toronto?
why not JK...that sounded personal? (or i could be wrong) ...they can't handle 6 people??
Looking for Best Italian Fine Dining in Toronto

best brand mixer for at home artisan baker
i'm planning to get a mixer as a gift for my friend. Price range is $400+ It has to be good because he does a lot of breads. What's out there? GTA area. I considered e-bay but have only bought books on line.
is Anna Olson a sellout?
Try to look at the big picture. Or maybe you've made it too big. She's not a world leader. She's on the FoodNetwork. She looks pretty and has some talent. If you watch her show and try some of her creations and/or go to her bakery you realize she is pretty good at what she does. Why can't she have it both ways! I can still respect her even if she has looked into her financial soul and realized it is wanting. I don't think it takes away from her past accomplishments. It just means she wanted some money. I won't write someone off because they want some financial security in their lives. Who knows what personal challenges she might have? This all just comes down to money. And respect that aspect or not...some people just have certain requirements.
Where would she draw the line? I don't think it matters. I'm giving her the cake and the fork...I'll decide where my own line is and not draw one for others. In this paticular case anyway...we are just talking about a Food personality on the tellie...ah yes, the power of the television...the power of money...we all give them both way too much, but that is life for some people, maybe hers.
what new chefs to watch and try (not old, tried, tested and true, but NEW)
I liked the Chef Jay Scaife at the Taboo Resort up north. He's been around but not that long. I don't think he's been given enough recognition. I think he worked under Michael Pataran. I know it's a long drive but it's a great weekend trip for golf and food in the summer. The golf course is pretty good.
is Anna Olson a sellout?
i say who cares... what about the chefs who promote toothpaste and mass produced chicken and tephlon pans..food chains..I have seen "famous" chefs in fast food outlets..I don't think it takes away very much...it just means they're human and Anna would like to have some extra cash while she can still get it. If I could snag a gig like that I'm all in!! "treading on thin ice" please..she has proven herself..let her reap the benefits of years of hard work...I don't think it makes her less worthy of her craft....if culinary snobbery was wide spread there wouldn't be as many creative chefs out there...professional and at home..
Igor From Restaurant Makeover [Moved from Ontario board]
(off the Igor topic again) Yes, I heard Chef Lynn and her girlfriends were going to take on Bobby Flay! Can't wait to see that one!!
Food and Wine Show: Is it worthwhile?
note: Truffle spaghettini has been the signature dish for Truffles for the past 15 yrs. Anyway.. Went to the food and wine show but didn't have time to stay long. From what I experienced, it was just ok. If you are looking for something amazing,(usually around the end of October) you must try the free flowing port and douro tasting at the Le Meridien King Edward Hotel. There was plenty to taste--Warre's, Taylor Fladgate (tawny 40yr was my favourite),Graham's,Quinta do Estanho,Quinta de Ventozelo,Quinto do Infantado,Quinta de Ventozelo,Ramos Pinto, just to name a few. Some even had some private imports. The hotel provided an amazing cheese table. All for the low low price of $25. Amazing!! It's a good thing I live downtown so we were able to walk (or slightly wobble) home!!
JK Wine Bar - meh
i posted here before and was censored...but anyway..i thought jk is generally good but don't always rely on toronto life ratings..some are pure fluff!!
coming to ny..is the gordon ramsey restaurant up yet?
i'm heading there next weekend and I was wondering if gordon ramsey's new restaurant is open yet. Since I never tried his restaurants when we were in England, I now have an opportunity. Should I? Or shouldn't I?
Didier? or Le select?
splendido..for sure..love david lee...and yannick is fantastic in the front of the house..have not gone lately but it was wonderful when we went..
Fresh pasta in west GTA for dinner tonight (take-out, for home cooking)
now...if you have time here is an outstanding recipe for pasta dough....mass production of course for freezing (but what i've seen on this a recent blog, people don't have much room in their freezers!)
80 egg yokes..2kg hard flour...7oz water...7oz olive oil..2oz white vinegar...2 tbsp salt mix
divide and freeze until you use.
Where in Ontario can I get Rabbit Legs?
i've bought rabbit at No Frills also...at a good price..
where to find exotic meat?
try the "butcher shop" if they don't have something i'm sure they would be happy to source it out for you
Susur
i thought susur was amazing...i cannot come up with one negative comment...we, however did not receive the time limit...maybe it was because we dined very slowly and didn't give them the chance to get rid of us under 2hrs....
Prince Edward County - Top 3
i am in love with norman hardie...ever since he was at Truffles...i loved dining there....wonderful to see he has fulfilled his dreams
What do the contents of your freezer say about you?
someone once told me not to put my coffee beans in the freezer...is that true?
Breakfast
bonjour brioche....if you can stand the hit and miss service ...i heard it has improved lately
Truffles, Four Seasons?
i have dined at Truffles on and off for the past 10-15yrs....i believe the best times were under patrick lin...hit and miss with some of the other chefs...when Robert Sulatycky (sp?) was the Executive chef it also very good...the last couple of times..i don't know....its been more miss than hit....although the service has always been exceptional.....the cuisine has been good....but definately not up to the standards i have come to known in the past....but i will try again. There are so many exceptional restaurants in Toronto, I might have to let the old girl go.
