raw/vegan food options in chicago

I second Karyn's on Green, we just went for the first time a couple of days ago and it was fantastic. It was definitely well priced and the drinks are delicious! We can't stop thinking about going back and soon.

Single bottles of beer in Chicago

I know that Cost Plus, World Market sells single beers so you can create your own six pack. Not sure if all the ones you want are sold in singles but they're worth checking out!

Vegetarian Chicago

I went to Green Zebra and must say I left totally hungry.

Also depending on what kind of veggie eater you are or I guess I should say why you are vegan or vegetarian you might not want to go there. It is owned by people who also own and run a super "meat-centric" place, Custom House. If you are a vegan for animal right reasons you might not want your dollars to go there. It all depends on your personal preference. I know that this is a gray area so some might not have an issue with it at all.

New high end vegan in Chicago?

That's weird. I guess they weren't really vegan.

New high end vegan in Chicago?

Have you been to Trotters? Supposedly they have a vegetarian multi course fixed price menu. I'm sure if you specified that you want it to be Vegan that they'd be able willing to accomodate you two. Another place recently opened called Mana Food Bar. I haven't been there but it looks good. Not as high end as Trotters. Whatever you decide, please let us know where and how it was! My fiance and I are both vegan and I would love to find something to save him and treat him to.

Cheers,
Julie

LARGE portion sizes and healthy?

Kramers grocery is good. I ate there for the first time a few weeks ago, it's downtown. They have a small cafe upstairs and I thought the portions were good sizes and well priced especially if you pick whatever is the daily special. Also have you had Ethiopian? Ras Dashen is great, very health, portions are well sized and you can mix and match stuff. Also not sure what your special diet is but FYI the bread/crepe they serve their food on is gluten free.

Loop area - Ethiopian,sushi,Viet & more

I absolutely love Ras Dashen for Ethiopian. It is located at Ardmore and Broadway, you could take a cab my guess would be about $20 or you could take the Red Line up there and Cab back or the 36 bus which drops off about 15 paces but buses always take longer.

I have to find a new Vietnamese place, our fav closed. There is one opening really close, I am hoping it's a good one.

Tourists Seeking Unusual Chicago Food Spots

i think you have a great list of places to try! I am a HUGE fan of Ras Dashen and can't praise them enough. If you go on a Friday (they have live music @ around 8pm on Fridays) or Sat I would go to eat a little on the early side like 6pm or even earlier. They get busy fast and if you've never had Ethiopian you might not get as much help with the menu as you would if they weren't so busy. Have a terrific time while you're here!

M.Henry-Worth the wait?

I think it's great and if you aren't pressed for time that it is worth the wait. You can usually go in and get a coffee and relax and wait. I feel like waiting for a seat for brunch with friends isn't so bad, gives us even more time to chat and catch up. If you go, enjoy!

Organic Eggs

You can get them at the farmers markets, I know that Green City Market carries them. You can also get them from Irv and Shelly's Fresh Picks. They get all of their produce/dairy/meat from farms in the area (they do get stuff from neighboring states). They deliver to your door like other grocery delivery companies. They do specific zip codes on specific days.

Good Luck!

I want to eat at Hot Dougs

Since they close at 4, we used to always go at 3/3:15 the line was MUCH shorter by then and had died down. I just didn't like eating a hot dog before noon so we went closer to the closing end. Have fun!

Vegetarian Friendly Recommendations?

No prob! If you go to Ras Dashen on a Friday, they have live music and they also take reservations which I would recommend you make cause they can get pretty busy on the weekend!
I forgot to put that Pick Me Up Cafe, Uncommon Ground, Handle Bar and Bongo Room all of breakfast in addition to lunch and dinner. Just call for hours before you go.

Cheers!

Vegetarian Friendly Recommendations?

Well, it doesn't sound like you're a strict vegetarian so I agree with Ferret, I am sure you will find something and almost any restaurant. If you want to make sure you're food isn't cooked in butter/lard or you don't eat eggs and need an egg free breakfast then you'll want some recommendations. I also think there are some great meat free restaurants for you and your meat eater friends to check out, I hope they can go a meal without meat.

Here are some of my favorite places:

Ethiopian
Ras Dashen - dinner
Located up on the north side of the city but well worth it lots of veggie and meat options

Pick Me Up Cafe (near wrigley field) meat/veggie

The Chicago Diner (Near Wrigely Field) Meat free/they serve eggs -also offer lunch/dinner

Uncommon Ground (very close to Wrigley Field) - also offer lunch/dinner meat/veggie if you eat eggs

Handle Bar (in Wicker Park, west side of the city) - also offer lunch/dinner meat/veggie

Bongo Room (Wicker Park) meat/veggie if you eat eggs

Toast (just north of downtown in Lincoln park) - Breakfast/Lunch (meat/veggie if you eat eggs)

1492 (Tapas) - downtown dinner (meat/veggie)

Vongs Thai Kitchen (dinner, maybe lunch?) downtown meat/veggie

Star of Siam (dinner, maybe lunch) downtown meat/veggie

Have fun!!!!!

Looking for dives..

Siam Noodle at Leland and Broadway (just South of Leland) has great cheap thai food and is a byob. They were featured on check please (a local show about local restaurants). It is sooooo good! If you like Ethiopian, Ras Dashen (Broadway and Ardmore, just north of Hollywood) is fantastic. It's definitely affordable (neither place at all is a dive, but definitely not going to empty your wallet) and delicious. You can get meat combo dishes and vegetarian platters, lots of choices! If I think of any other ideas I'll post them!

Decent food with blues, jazz or piano bar

There is also Andy's Jazz at Hubbard, just East of State. FYI there is a $10 cover at the door but the food is pretty good and so is the music. Some nights are way better than others. One night we saw a fantastic "afro cuban" jazz group.

Has anyone been to Chicago Curry House by South Loop?

We went there for a friends birthday dinner. It was fairly busy so our service was kind of slow. My fiance and I are vegan and we found plenty to eat. We had the veggie momo's, they were delish. In college I worked at an Indian/Nepali/Tibetan restaurant and I missed Momo's! We also had Chana Masala which was ok, we've had better at Raj Darbar (on Halsted). Curry House has a large menu so there is still a ton of stuff to try, I am sure we'll go back.

Need GOOD Sushi...

Kaze is really great for sushi with a twist. They'll do special nigiri options like salmon with mushrooms and truffle oil. They are located in Roscoe Village.

Also for a more laid back hip place with great sushi I recommend Wakamono in East Lakeview.

Orange? Elsewhere?

I'm not as crazy about Orange as I used to be. I highly recommend Toast. They have Mascarpone pancakes, eggs benedict with prosciutto and truffle hollandaise, stuffed French toast, Nutella crepes. Really delish!

I think Walker Brothers is good. I don't know if I'd say great but definitely good. The apple pancake is good but mega sweet. Worth trying though!

Bday dinner but dont want downtown

I really love Ras Dashen (Ethiopian). I think on most Fridays they have live music. They have traditional and non-traditional seating. Traditional would entail all four of you eating from the same large dish (which if any of you are vegetarians/vegans you might not want to do) which is fun and comfortable. They have good wine and beer and are in no rush to have you leave so they can seat the next table. At least they've never rushed us!

I and my boyfriend have had many birthday dinners there.

Cheap breakfast diner in downtown?

You could go to Tempo. You would go North on Michigan Ave toward E. Ohio. Turn left onto E. Chestnut and it's at 6 E Chestnut. It is less than 1 mile walk.

The poor mans skillet is delish.

ETHIOPIAN FOOD

I have been to Mama Desta's and I think it does not compare in the slightest to the quality of food at Ras Dashen. I think that Ras Dashen is well worth the short hike! I have only good experiences at there. When we went to Mama Desta's we couldn't pick our own side dishes and the meat was AWFUL. We got the steak tartar and it was all fatty and pink and I couldn't eat it because I thought I was going to get sick. One of our sides that I remember was a mushroom dish and it was obvious the mushrooms were canned and not fresh. Blech.

Lincoln Park with a toddler?

Hmmm I don't have any kids but I see kids brought to Toast a lot. Toast is a great brunch/lunch spot located at Halsted and Webster. Also there is Molly's Cupcakes but that's for dessert. That is on Clark at about Wrightwood. If you want some quick, yummy, bar stool seating Falafel and Hummus, Sultans Market is great! they are across the street from Molly's cupcakes. The egg and cheese fettia is soooo delicious, it's a sandwich, a kind of "focaccia bread" with Egg and cheese baked into it and then they make it a sandwich with hummus (or baba ganoush), tomatoes, onion and lettuce.

Those are the first couple off the top of my head. If I think of others I'll post again! Have fun!!

CSA's - Anyone use Sweet Earth Organic?

I order through Irv & Shelly's Fresh Picks too! I LOVE them! I love all the veggies I get I love the service. They are super nice and I have even inquired about random things that are not on their site and they are looking into for me! I think the delivery is great because they do certain zip codes on certain days therefore they aren't driving ALL over the place wasting gas, they have it figured out really well! They also give you a sheet attached to your receipt with how to cook veggies in the fresh picks box in case you're not sure and they have recipes on their site! I would highly recommend them to anyone!

I just reread that and I am so like a commercial! ha! I really do love the service though, I love buying from local farmers. I love the quality and the service.

Back to Chicago for 2 months - need recs

I would recommend in Wicker Park/Bucktown at the North/Damen/Milwaukee intersection, Earwax, Bongo Room, Handle Bar (all for Brunch/Lunch, Bongo Room does not do dinner but the other two do), in Rosco Village Kitch'n is great and for splurge Kaze for sushi (Damen and Roscoe). In Lakeview Wakamono has great sushi and there is Ping Pong (Buckingham and Broadway). Up north in Uptown there is Siam Noodle (great Thai, super cheap) just South of Leland on the West side of Broadway.

Best Brunch/Lunch on Southport

I LOVE Southport Grocery, seriously delicious! Julius Meinl is ok, I wasn't crazy about it for breakfast but would try it again.

I have been to Violet but I think it had only been open for about a week or two. I would say definitely not great then and the floors made peoples footsteps sound SOOO loud. We went with 2 friends of ours and were ready for a comfy brunch and everyone was moving sooo fast and sooo loud we could barely concentrate on our conversation. The breakfast was just ehhhh, I have had way better. JMO
