What's good in Tarrytown these days?

Another vote for Tarry Tavern. The 7 or 8 meals I had there were almost all excellent and those that weren't were at least good. Fine service, as well. Chiboust: one meal...one flop. Not to mention an endless stream of emails afterward.

kale chips without a dehydrator?

I do Pepein's recipe. Trimmed. Tossed with good salt and olive oil. Onto a rack and into a 225 oven for 20-25 minutes. Simple. Delicious.

Indoor winter farmer's market at Croton

While parking in either of the Van Wyck lots is harder than it was before the Market opened it is certainly no harder than it would be if one or both of the empty stores in the VW II area had tenants with reasonably popular businesses operating roughly 60-70 hours a week. The Market is open only 4 hours a week. The two shopping areas are independently owned. Z's no-compete lease does not extend to VW II. And while I love shopping at Zeytinia and do so 3 or 4 times a week they don't carry all the items I buy at the Market. Most of their produce is not local or organic. Their fish is not locally sourced. Their meat doesn't all come from locally, organically and humanely raised animals. So the Market provides us with items that Z chooses not to carry. Rather than just complaining about lost business Z might want to think about competing for that business a little harder by taking a page from the Market's book and carrying many more locally, organically and sustainably grown items. Now, excuse me, but I'm off to Zeytinia's to get tonight's dinner!

Suggestion to people who dine out in groups and get separate bills

Oh, please, for god sake, just run the damn cards!

Whatever you wear make very, very certain it has very, very deep pockets,

Downtown Rochester Dinner Recs

Check out Lento. I've had a few very good meals there. It's a "local-seaonal-sustainable-farm-to-table-able restaurant." Clean, straight-ahead prep. of very fresh, fine ingredients. In addition, they have a wonderful raw bar with a very large selection of oysters from both coasts and some very nice cocktail selections.

Two Ladies for dinner on Sun near the Hilton?

Any thoughts? High-Moderate price range. Something new and fun before we get down to business on Mon. Thanks.

Dinner in the Village with my 20 year old son

ISO Chic, downtown place for client cocktails

Help. Need to take an out of town client for cocktails. Would like something a bit chic, a bit hot/trendy but not loud...need to do some business! Thanks.

Ocean House, Croton

Ocean House is "our" little gem. It's really a wonderful neighborhood place and the no-reservation policy helps keeps it that way. That, however, isn't their reason for the no res. policy. With such a limited number of tables even one or two no-shows would put a big hit on the night's profits. In addition, it really is a mom-and pop operation. The cost of paying someone to take reservations would also diminish what little profits such a small place makes. That said, we love it just the way it is.

Blue Hill ~ Stone Barns ~ your thoughts !

Let's not get carried away, guys. After 4 visits I can say the following: The food is always delicious, inventive, fresh, local, oraganic and beautifully presented. The service is professional, knowledegeable, impeccable. The setting is serence, comfortable and nearly idyllic. Everything is perfection...until the bill comes. That, I agree, is way off the charts. But every once in a while you just gotta say "What the Hell? and treat yourself.

Burlington, VT. this Wed....

Heading up to Burlington for my son's UVM orientation. We have one night on our own. Looking for local, seasonal, interesting, inventive...Any help, please...

Mon. Night North of the TZ?

Any 'Hounders with suggestions for a Mon. night dinner anywhere north of the Bridge. Was headed for Mt. Kisco Fish House or Flying Pig but they're both closed on Mondays. Any kind of food...Thanks in advance.

Monteverde in Cortlandt Manor

Not one to pile on but...no, not a keeper inspite of the view. Mediocre food, less than mediocre service and quite pricey, as well.

Chanterelle?

Go to Chantarelle, by all means. It never disappoints. You won't just be eating, you'll be dining. It's an event. Go with it.

Iron Horse in Pleasantville, ny Anyone?

Have eaten there many times over the years. Up and down. Up and down. Lately is been several downs in a row. Afraid they're off my list for a while.

Dining at Chanterelle Tuesday

That doesn't seem quite fair, lookingforpig. I've eaten there lots of times and have always found the service to be impeccable, no matter what anyone does or does not order. As good as the staff is, they are not mind readers so being "forced" to wait in the lounge could not possibly have had anything to do with tasting menus or $200 bottles of wine. And, hell, they comped your drinks and dessert...what more cold they have done? The place is special...food, service, decor, table spacing...please..

best oysters on the half shell?

In Northern West. Ocean House in Croton-on-Hudson has great oysters Wide selection from both East and West coasts, some not-often-seen oysters, as well. And always fresh and high quality.

92nd St. Y?

Other than Sfogia...any suggestions in that neighborhood. Thanks in advance.

X2O...dashed expectations!

Yes, it was the tuna parfait...foam and all.

X2O...dashed expectations!

Went to X2O last night expecting a Peter Kelly experience...did not get it at all. Things started on the wrong foot when my drink order came out wrong. Twice. And a second drink just never arrived. Very nice menu but the food didn't live up to the menu's descriptions. Ordered the fish chowder. It came with a fussy presentation: the server placed oyster crackers in the soup bowl and then poured the soup into the bowl from a small white "teapot." The soup was tepid. Sent it back. The same bowl was returned. The soup was hotter but the crackers were now soggy. Maybe a whole new soup would not have been too much trouble? Ordered the tuna app. on the captain's suggestion. Didn't like it. Would have thought a replacement might have have been offered. Nope. Berkshire Black Hog mignon was cooked way past medium, past well and just into the over-cooked zone. Dry and tasteless. Great gingered sweet pot. and vibrant green beans were of some consolation. Asked for some wine advice about a perhaps too-young 2003 Prunaio. Was told that it should be fine since "it's made from sangiovese grapes. Same as a chianti. And chianti is fine after 4 years." Not a good sign when Prunaio and chiantis are equated. Went with a '99 Barolo which was so good that I didn't even mind having to pour most it myself. The service, for the most part, was well-intentioned but inept. The place was fully booked out so I'm sure the staff was over-extended. Waited way too long to get the check and then to have it taken. The captain was great when he asked how we enjoyed the evening and we told him that we didn't and why we didn't. Some adjustments were made to the bill which we appreciated it but we would have appreciated a real P.K. night more. Needs work!

Restaurants in Montauk?

Dave's Grill, without doubt. But you must go there in person at 4PM to get a primetime reservation. Bring a book and enjoy the sun while you wait for them to start taking reservations at 4:30. Worth the effort. Also Harvest is great, abundant food right on the water.

Dining Alone - A Voce, Hearth, Craft, Gramercy Tavern?

To add to what's already been said: An early dinner outside at A Voce is a great alternative to eating at a bar. Full menu. Pleasant patio. Quieter. And of course great food.

Monteverde Review

Much as I try, I just can't walk away from this beautiful restaurant with any intention of coming back for the food. It gets more and more beautiful each time I go, but inspite of a new chef (Ned Petersen), lunch was only fair. Tomato vinagrette and a caesar salad were promising starters, but the dorade that followed, ineptly described by an unknowledgealble waitress as "much like trout" was very similar to bluefish instead.
The bacon cheeseburger with melted gruyere was rubbery and overcooked. The accompanying fries, however, were skinny, crisp and delicious.
The service was slow and our particular waitress had a lot of attitude. And, as always, the prices were high.

The setting is so drop dead that I keep hoping someone will get this place together.
But, sadly, we were sorely disappointed once again.

The manager admitted she was shorthanded that day. And she herself was pleasant and accomodating.

Ethiopian Rest. @ 47th St?

That sounds right. Thanks.

Ethiopian Rest. @ 47th St?

Caught a bit of Todd Enlish's PBS show last night. He was at an Ethiopian restaurant on, I believe, 47th St. I missed the name. Anyone know what it is? Thanks.
