looking for prepared food/ take out options for family meal in Providence

McCurdy's Junction House could be a good option. They have tasty comfort food, and vegetarian and vegan options. They also do catering. They will switch to the fall menu any day now, but in the mean time here's a link to their current menu:

MARION / MATTAPOISETT / WAREHAM Please Help!!! Business Lunch...

It may not be classy enough for a business lunch, but would How on Earth be an option?

PVD/RI * October * Open/Closed/Coming Soon

Are you thinking of "Teriyaki and Korean House" on the corner of Westminster and Eddy? It is operated by the folks from Solomon's Market on Benefit Street that closed a couple of years ago.

August Opening, Closing, and Coming Soon in PVD/RI

I just read in East Side Monthly that the Flan y Ajo Tapas bar will open in the space formerly occupied by Farmstead Lunch. A small space for small plates.

Also, there was an article about this in the phoenix at the end of June. Just found it now.

August Opening, Closing, and Coming Soon in PVD/RI

I'm not sure exactly why Wickenden Street is suffering so. Probably a combination of all of the above- high rents are definitely a factor.

It is such a shame that the building where Reflections Cafe was is still empty. The building is now for sale (and I guess it has been for sale a number of times over the past several years). One of the neighboring business owners said that someone was interested in buying it and reopening the space as Reflections, but whether or not that will happen remains to be seen.

Farmstead in Wayland Square now serves sandwiches at lunchtime, since the downtown location closed.

The Ugly American on Ives Street is officially open!

Providence (or north) good liquor store(s)

Town Wine and Spirits (179 Newport Ave, East Providence) has an outstanding single malt scotch selection. Also a great store for wine. Excellent staff- very knowledgeable and friendly.

Any drink easy on the tummy?

Fernet Branca!

August Opening, Closing, and Coming Soon in PVD/RI

The Antiques Co-Op next to Taste of India closed recently. That may have been what you noticed- or the empty space across the street where O-Cha was. There was activity in the former O-Cha spot, but it seems to have ceased. You're observations are indeed correct- Wickenden Street has a large number of empty storefronts right now.

McCurdy's has evolved quite a bit in the 10 months they have been open. I work in the neighborhood and went there for lunch quite a bit, but haven't been in since the focus shifted to dinner. I found the soups and daily specials consistently good.

August Opening, Closing, and Coming Soon in PVD/RI

The Ugly American has closed its Fall River location and will be moving to Providence, in the space formerly occupied by George's Deli on Ives Street. They were planning on opening in July, but are still waiting for the board of health.

Also on Ives, McCurdy's Junction House is now full service (instead of primarily take-out/counter service) and is open just for dinner. (it was my favorite lunch spot. boo.)

I've also heard that there is going to be a tapas spot opening on Westminster downtown, but I'm not sure of the time frame.

Ground sumac

I've purchased ground sumac (probably 6 months ago now but I imagine they still have it) at Sonia's near east market on Park Ave in Cranston.

thai orchids in cranston, ri?? reviews/suggestions please

I love the Thai Orchid! I agree with jgl that the owners are absolutely lovely. Everything that I have tried there has been enjoyable, but I keep going back for the country style pad thai and the Tamarind Duck. YUM.

I was smitten with Rim Nahm when it first opened because I lived a short walk away, but in general I remember it being only ok. I haven't been in a few years, so I can't speak of any recent experiences there.

Food Trucks Rhode Island?

I just read about Mama Kim's, a new korean food truck that parks on the east side.

Looking forward to trying it!

Richmond St., Providence

The Red Fez is a short walk from Richmond Street (peck street in between pine and friendship), tasty, and open late!

any Ethiopian Restaurant, near Providence?

I work in the neighborhood and check every day- they are not open yet. I heard from someone who works at the International Institute, who is helping to connect the restaurant with the East African community to find staff, that they are still hiring. And, as Garris mentioned, getting through all of the red tape can be an incredibly lengthy process. I hope that they are able to open soon.

Newer in PVD?

McCurdy's Junction house opened on Ives Street a few months ago. Not exactly a destination for someone visiting from out of town, but they do offer tasty and affordable comfort food. Meat and vegetarian/vegan options (that are vegetable based rather than processed soy). It is BYOB and take out and counter service right now, though that may change (ie: if you eat there you are served in take out containers rather than plates). It is close to my work and a very welcome addition to Fox Point. Menu here:

Corned Beef Hash in Rhode Island

I second JP Spoonems. Cozy and kid friendly. Their ham is also incredible.

ethiopian/eritrean coming to providence!

I noticed a banner this morning for Abyssinia, a new ethiopian/etritrean restaurant that will be opening on wickenden street in providence. It will be in the building formerly occupied by Angkor, which moved to Traverse Street into the space formerly occupied by Cafe Yuni. Not sure of when Abyssinia will open, but just wanted to share this exciting news!

Catering? New Bedford, MA

I was at an event catered by Smoke and Pickles, based in Westport, MA, earlier this summer. Not sure of the price (probably not reasonable, unfortunately), but the food is phenomenal and Dan George is amazing.

Looking for a really good grinder in providence....

I second the Italian Corner and am also a huge fan of George's Deli on Ives Street in Providence- excellent Italian grinder, on bread from LaSalle Bakery. Go there soon though, as the business is going to be changing hands September 1st. I'm worried about the future there.

Lunch in Providence, RI near Brown?

If you are in the mood for a sandwich, George's Deli (167 Ives Street) is fantastic and very inexpensive. I'm also a fan of East Side Pockets, though it gets very crowded (I find it overwhelming sometimes) at lunchtime.

jackfruit in brine in RI?

hello chowhounders,
I'm looking to buy canned jackfruit in brine (not sweetened syrup). As much as I would love to spend my day visiting asian markets, I was wondering if anyone has seen it recently in a specific place in the providence area?
thanks!

Providence--leave your warm house in the snow? For what?

Technically, they were evicted for lack of rent payment- 3 days after the due date. It seems that the relationship between as220 and the taqueria had been strained for a long time and when the taqueria slipped up as220 seized their opportunity to get them out. I have friends on both sides and the whole thing was very ugly and unfortunate. No plans to bring back the truck or reopen somewhere else at this point, but hopefully that will change. I miss those tacos!

Providence--leave your warm house in the snow? For what?

fyi- as220 no longer has mexican. the taqueria pacifica was evicted and ceased operation september 30th. very unfortunate.

Middle eastern markets around Providence?

Oasis on Broad Street (at Summer Street) in Providence is a Middle Eastern restaurant with a take out window and small market in the back. My first few visits were very positive.
