HOW TO SAVE MONEY EATING OUT

Uh, again, I didn't BRING the nero D'avola, they SOLD it at the rest.

HOW TO SAVE MONEY EATING OUT

First, not everyone knows about BYOB's... second, if you read my first post you'll see I never said I bring everyday wines.

HOW TO SAVE MONEY EATING OUT

... BYOB.
(bring your own bottle)

With the economy in the state it's in, I find myself doing it more and more. Many restaurants in NYC mark up a bottle of wine by 100%, and that's OK, I understand a guy's got to make a living. BUT... I found one of my everyday Sicilian Nero D'Avolas (that I buy in my local wine shop for under $10) going for over $45 in a restaurant. Now that's just not right.

So here are a few guidelines and suggestions regarding BYOB's:

Some restaurants waive the corkage fee, and if they do it's generally a good idea to give the waiter/waitress a good tip.

But if you do have to pay a corkage fee, the range is usually from $10-30. And that's still saving you money.

You should also call in advance to make sure the bottle your bringing is not on that particular restaurant's wine list.

Some restaurants may have a "maximum" number of bottles you may bring in, once you go over that number you must buy from the wine list.

Yet another wine pairing question

Any one of these will do:

Rubesco Rosso Di Torgiano DOC Lungarotti 2004...
Firriato Chiaramonte Nero D’Avola 2005...
Rocca Delle Macie Chianti Classico DOCG 2004
DaVinci Collezione Speciale Toscana Chianti 2004 DOCG Italy

...they're all in the $10-15 range... (I think the Firriato may be a bit more)

Bonfire Grill on Austin in Forest Hills?

Had a really nice cheeseburger at Bonfire Grill in Forest Hills, paired well with J. Lohr Estates Seven Oaks Cabernet Sauvignon 2006 from Paso Robles, California...made from 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Petite Sirah, 5% Syrah, 4% Petit Verdot, 4% Merlot and 1% Malbec-- quite an intense mix, but it works. Stainless steel fermentation, then 14-16 months in oak casks. Bright reddish purple in color with strong fruity fragrance of cherries cedar and blackberries, and cherry soda, chocolate and vanilla on the mouth. paired nicely.

Tall Order for Italian Suggestions... Beware.

... or il trulli?

fantastic mozzerella, lackluster tomatoes...

Cut the not-so-great-tomatoes into wedges and a few cloves of garlic (leave in skins) place in baking dish in 400 degree oven for 45 minutes.... meanwhile cook pasta... drain... squeeze roasted garlic cloves over tomatoes and pour onto past... then top with mozz, fresh basil and lightly mix.

Lunch Help: New Job, New Neighborbood (Varick&Spring)

just take a stroll down carmine street... it's loaded with great places to eat and drink in all price ranges... grey dog cafe, Marinella , etc, then make a left on bleeker... there's Rocco's bakery, john's pizza, Faiccio's market, Murray's chees, amy's bread... the list goes on. Your best bet is to just walk around on nice days and try new places. I did that when I worked down there. Also try hudson street... pepe verde, white horse tavern, cowgirl hall of fame.

Burgers! Please Opine regarding your faves

Paul's is definitely my pick too... the juiciest and fattest burgers around, and the pickles are to die 4. great fries. cheap.

I second Cafe Mogador... great room for relaxed, long breakfast. Grey Dog is a little more crowded (small) but food is good organic and coffee is great. Silver Spurs on Houston and LaGuardia. I'll get back to you on the other two. enjoy.

Gaetana's Cucina Italiana

I think it's been open for a couple of years.... not tiny, I've seen a table of 8. It's a good size place.

Gaetana's Cucina Italiana

UvaRara: New wine bar in Middle Village, Queens

I LOVE this place - it's the closest thing to actually being in an authentic Italian cafe...no kidding. The atmosphere is perfect and the food is truly delicious--in fact the homemade chicken soup tasted exacly like my Nana's!! What a treat - now I can eat her soup and not have to hear any guilty reminders about not visiting often enough...

UvaRara: New wine bar in Middle Village, Queens

I recently discovered this little gem on Metropolitan Ave. It's in an old building that looks like it was a chapel at one time, and the interior is brick and arches and lots of antique wooden beams...really cozy and warm. It's a wine bar first... and one of the owners, Rich, really knows his stuff... the food is great, made by the Napolitano chef/part-owner Nardino(?) and has the right idea. The wait staff is all attentive and super friendly. Most of the restaurants and bars are on the east side of Metro... this is the first new one on the west side. The neighborhood really needed something like this. There isn't a sign outside yet, but the address is 7928 Metropolitan Ave. 718 894-0052. Don't miss this.

Arthur avenue market prices and info

I'll concede that the Wine Store has a great selection of wines, but 2 years ago I bought a bad bottle of wine there. I don't get up to Arthur ave that often so I just dumped the contents. The next trip I took I told the guy at the counter about my skunk wine experience. I didn't expect him to give me a refund without returning the bottle. But hey, I'm a semi-regular customer... the least he could have done is given me a discount on my next purchase.... he didn't. So, I'll never set foot in that place again.

Best Bang for My Buck Burger?

I like PAUL's on 2nd ave and st marks... big, fat, juicy burgers made on a grill (covered with an upside down stainless steel bowl)... definitely a B4YB... and the pickles?!?!?! really good.

Arthur avenue market prices and info

I like to get there at 10 on a saturday morning, stop in one of the bakeries for an espresso, then thru the market for produce, teitel bros for olives, figs and cheeses... then an early lunch at Dominick's... it's a tight squeeze, but try the stuffed artichokes for appy and any pasta or meat dishes for main course... cash only.

Danny Brown "DB" Wine Bar in Forest Hills

I am sorry to say that as of the last few weeks, Joe is no longer tending the wine bar.... Joe, where the hell are you? I hope you're on an extended Christmas vacation... if not, tell us where you are now.

Gaetana's Cucina Italiana

The other night my wife and I had a couple of hours to kill before meeting friends at a restaurant in the west village and we found Gaetana's Cucina Italiana. I know it sounds like a restaurant (and it is) but the bar is a good size so we went in and had a great time. The owner/bartender Frank is really friendly and got his recipe ideas from his mom. We tried the stuffede artichoke appy and it was terrrific. We want to go back for dinner and wondered if anyone else could give us feedback or suggestions.
