cleaning Pyrex
I made a horrible mess of a pyrex dish on Sunday by roasting turnips. Olive oil has been baked onto the dish forming an almost rubberized coating and there are stains from the turnip that I can't get out. I've tried soaking, a nylon scrubber and baking soda.
Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated as this is one of my favourite dishes and I would like to save it if possible.
Ottawa Restos Not To Miss?
Hi Prima
Happy New Year.
For lunches, I like "Lunch" (also known as Think Lunch). There's one on Bank St near Slater and one on Slater between Elgin and Metcalfe. Great chicken club sandwich (sliced chicken breast and good bread - no deli meats!) and good soups. Also good are Bowich at 155 Bank (near Laurier) and there's a couple of nice places on Elgin south of Somerset (one is directly across from St. John's Church - the name escapes me) and the other one is a little further south - Boko. I have a colleague who swears by Bread and Sons at 195 Bank (near Gloucester) but I've never been there.
If I feel like getting some exercise and some fresh pita, I head over to the Middle East Bakery on Somerset at Percy (just east of Bronson). I like their tabouleh and tzatiki, add some pita and there's the perfect lunch. Everything's made on site.

Ottawa Restos Not To Miss?
I usually go to the Nepean Street location but I've also been to the Wellington Street also. I think Wellington Street is a little bigger but both are equally good.
Ottawa Restos Not To Miss?
Hey Prima, wish I could help witht that but I live in the west end and work downtown. I don't know the east end at all.
A better resource is the Ottawa Foodies website - it's purely local stuff and someone there should be able to help.
Ottawa Restos Not To Miss?
sorry if this is really late but in addition to canada259's list I would Play, Wellington Gastropub, Navarra and I am really biased to Aroma Meze.
Lots of great eating in Ottawa.
Ottawa recommendations
This is one of my favourite restaurants and I've never had anything less than an excellent meal.
Last time I was there I was with my sister, we both ordered different things and shared everything. Love the lamb sausages!
Restaurant in Ottawa for 6 on a Sunday night
Sorry, but this is a Toronto dominated board and Ottawa requests tend to get lost.
If you're staying at the Minto Suites Hotel, I can reccommend Aroma Meze (small plates Greek) on Nepean street - a 5 minute walk. Beckta, considered one of the best restos in Ottawa is also on Nepean but might be out of your price range.
If you're open to a cab ride, there are a number of restaurants in the Byward Market: Play, Domus, Navarra but a number of them have limited Sunday hours. I do know that Play is open on Sunday.

Ottawa Restaurants-Labour Day weekend
Unfortunately, Sweetgrass is closed - according to a blog by a local food writer, the future is uncertain as the owners are looking for investors.
That area of Ottawa is the ByWard Market - lots of good restos there: Domus, Play, Navarra, Chez Lucien, French Baker (breakfast), Benny's Bistro.
West of the downtown core, I really like Wellington Gastropub.

Breakfast in Ottawa?
I think you're going to have a bit of problem unless you're willing to travel a bit. The closest one I can think of is Café My House on Bank near Alta Vista but I am not reccommending since I haven't yet been.
Not in your area but I can suggest several places downtown/Byward market area: SconeWitch and the French Baker come to mind.
You might want to try the Ottawa Foodies website - it's devoted exclusively to Ottawa. As well, keep an eye on Omnivore's Ottawa - an Ottawa Citizen blog by foodwriter Ron Eade.
Saturday night in Ottawa with (grown-up) family
I agree totally with the recc for Zen Kitchen. - wonderful
As well, I have friends who like The Table at Wellington and Holland but I can't offer an opionin as I have never been there myself .
Ottawa: interesting dinners with baby in tow?
That incident you refer to was a one-off incident at a wine bar, perhaps not the most appropriate place to take an infant. It wasn't that they weren't served but that the restaurant wouldn't take their reservation.
Fairly close to your hotel is Aroma Me'ze on Nepean Street. I have seen high chairs there in the past. It's a lovely Greek restaurant. There are a number of restaurants in the ByWard Market area: Sweetgrass, Courtyard, Navarra and Murray Street. However, I would double check with them to make sure that they can accommodate you. Some restaurants just aren't set up to handle children.

Toronto - Lunch on Saturday
Some good ideas here - we will likely go to Le Petit Dejeuner. I've seen good things on the board about it and have been keen to try it.
Thanks for your help.

Toronto - Lunch on Saturday
I'm coming in to town with maman for my annual holiday shopping trip/Christmas concert/family visit.
I have all meals arranged except for a lunch on Saturday. We will be meeting my sister and niece. The niece and I are adventurous when it comes to food, my sister is not. Mom is pretty game as well but has some dietary restrctions.
We will be coming in on the train and staying at the King Eddie. We would like to check in and go from the hotel. Any ideas for something comfortable and casual in the downtown core? Hopefully something that doesn't require reservations since this train is often late.
I would be happy with a good soup and sandwich place. Has anyone been to the O&B canteen? Last year we went to Le Marché. Before I hear comments on that, I know that it's not even close to ideal but it solves a lot of problems with widely varying tastes.
Many thanks!

50th Anniversary Dinner in Ottawa, large group recommendation required
The NAC should be lovely - they've totally revamped the menu under their new chef. And they have parking.
Beckta on Nepean Street is worth considering as is the Wellington Gastropub. The latter is in the west end but the food and service is marvellous. Parking for anything downtown will be difficult.
I know you said you didn't want a hotel but the Marriott is opening a new restaurant. From what I've read, it sounds like it will be good. The former restaurant in the revolving space is now for rent for events (there's your ambiance).

Homestyle Cooking Between Peterborough and Ottawa
I can confirm that the Hershey factory is closed and there is nothing on that site.
However, if you are in Smiths Falls, I can reccommend the Courtyard Cafe in Davidson's Courtyard - 7 Russell Street West, across Russell St from the Shoppers Drug Mart. It's a lovely little cafe - lunches only as well as coffee and tea (and friendly service) It's not unusual for a city but for this small town, it's a real gem.
I've also been to the Fall River Pub but not in a few years. It's on Highway 7 west of Perth. Again, it's nothing I would make a special trip for but for this area, it's quite unusual. the problem with this location is that's it's quite out of the way. If I remember correctly there's nothing else around it and they tend to focus on the summer tourist crown. You might want to check out hours before you go.
Knefeh / knafah / kunafah in OTTAWA?
Just a little outside your specified zone, is the Middle East Food Bakery on Somerset West near Bronson (cross street is Percy, before Bronson).
I don't know if they actually have knefah but it's worth a try. They have great pitas that are made on site. And I love their tzatiki - mint and garlic, no cucumber.

Early breakfast in Ottawa
Benny's is open at 8 am and it's in your area.(the website for the French Baker doesn't give hours!) Baker Street Cafe may be good (I've never been) but it is really is quite out of your way.
Another option in the downtown core, but not in the Market, is Sconewitch at Albert and Lyon Street. They have wonderful scones as well as breakfast sandwiches (on scones) and it opens at 7 am on weekdays, 8 am on Saturday. It is a little bit out of your way - about 2-3 km - but I've never been disappointed.
There's another one at 35 Beechwood that might be closer but I don't know the area so can't reccommend it.

Dinner at Le Petit Dejeuner
Perfect timing - I was going to post a question about dinner here. I'll be in town soon and really wanted to check it out. .
Everything I've heard makes it sound like a great place for a comfortable, casual dinner and somewhere I can take a family member who likes really good Euro-centric food
Thanks for this review!
Ottawa recommendations for mid-priced Mediterranean restos (Albert & Bay area) ?
I work in the area and, unfortunately, there's not a lot. For mid-price, a good bet is Aroma Meze (Greek). Lovely place. Walk down Bay Street and right onto Nepean. It's on Nepean just east of Lyon. About 10 minutes from Albert/Bay.
For higher price, Beckta is wonderful!!!! One of the best restaurants in the city. It's almost right across the street from Aroma Meze.

Reception venues in Toronto and Ottawa
In Ottawa, I would suggest the various national museums/galleries. The National Gallery, Museum of Nature, War Museum and Museum of Civilization (across the river in Gatineau). I've been to events at all but the Museum of Nature which just re-opened after a major renovation. All four have rooms of various sizes and prices.
Looking for Ottawa recommendations - downtown/market
There's a lot to pick in the Market area alone. I second Murray Street and Play. Also in the Market and worth considering are Sweetgrass (aboriginal), Domus and Navarra (contemporary/Spanish).
Something in the downtown core, but not in the Market, is Town. It just opened up and I've heard very good things about it. I haven't been yet but can't wait to go. It's on Elgin Street.

[Ottawa] I need a Saturday night restaurant
as Apple stated, it 's hard to reccommend without knowing budget, food type, location etc...
However, I did check the link and some of the recc's were good: Sweetgrass Aboriginal (my fav), Domus (always reliable) and Apple's mention of Play (!). Also in that area of the Byward Market: Navarra and Murray Street.
If your friends are willing to go further out, the Wellington Gastropub on Wellington Street.

I reccomend getting a copy of Cheap Eats Ottawa. It's updated yearly.
One place I like is Brown Loaf Bakery on Elgin St at Somerset. Not really close to the Uni but not too far on a nice day.
Avoid the Byward Market - it's a tourist area. There are a few local farmers who sell there but not too many. Most of the vendors are re-sellers. The City of Ottawa (they own the Market) is making an effort to distinguish between farmers and resellers but your best bet is the farmer's market at Lansdowne Park - all local.

Ottawa recommendations
Ottawa isn't great for Chinese, South East Asian or Japanese.
I do agree with Mouton Noir on the Wellington Gastropub and Domus but can't reccommend Chez Lucien for the burgers (I found them dry). For a truly unique approach, try Sweetgrass in the Byward Market. It's an aboriginal bistro and quite lovely.
The Byward Market area is excellent : Murray Street, Navarra, Domus, Sweetgrass, PLAY. Any of these should provide you with an excellent meal.
Breakfast places downtown Ottawa
try Sconewitch at 388 Albert Street just west of Lyon. Lovely, lovely scones! Opens at 7 am. Not cheap but definitely worth it.
Also, Caffe Zuccero on Queen Street just west of Lyon (due north of Sconewitch). It's in the building with the Glue Pot pub. I haven't been there in a long time but the last time I did, I had a frittata last year that was very good. Like Sconewitch, it serves a business crowd and opens early.
breakfast in Toronto on Sunday morning
Thanks for the suggestions - Sunday morning is difficult. I'll probably end up at the Senator but may make a side trip to Petite Thuet and pick up something for the train.
breakfast in Toronto on Sunday morning
I need help with suggestions for breakfast Sunday morning downtown. I'll be staying at the Royal York and would like something within walking distance (10 minutes or so).
I would go to Le Petit Dejeuner but they don't open until 10 and, due to my schedule, I need to eat around 8:30ish.
Thanks!
Ottawa Food
fairly close on Sussex st is PLAY (sister to Beckta). Lots of choices in the Byward Market - Navarra and Sweetgrass (agree with Mike on this one)
