Burgers at the Brindle Room?

I'm so into this burger that I know that you can actually order it for dinner. :)

It's great - so juicy... almost buttery (in fact, there probably is some butter on that bun). My husband and I were super excited to learn that the burger meat is made up of the steak scraps from Sebastian's in Morristown, NJ. We lived right around the corner from that steak house the same year we gave up on being vegetarian.

Bierhaus - be forwarned

agreed on Lederhosen.

Where can I buy "homemade" chicken stock?

Fresh Direct has their own for $3 / pint. Ingredients: Water, Chicken, Onions, Celery, Carrots, Sea Salt, Fresh Parsley, Spices, Garlic.

Looking for a BYO that'll make sangria from your wine

This doesn't sound feasible to me - sangria is best when all the fruits and flavors sit and meld together for at lease a couple hours. In addition, the best (my favorite) recipes have other liquors added to them, which wouldn't be possible at a byo spot.

Recommendations for East Village

Agreed - stick w/ the ceviches at Desnuda.

Desnuda

Looking for lunch near Penn Station

Pick-a-Pita - excellent shawarma on 39th & 8th Ave. Get the chicken shawarma either in a pita or the laffa bread. All the toppings are delicious... I like the eggplant (it's a little spicy) and the onions.

Please help! Need to plan NYC wedding in 5 months! With amazing food! Venue suggestions?

Had my wedding at Alger House in 2007. I'm pretty sure you couldn't bring your own caterer, but their food is very good. The passed hors d'oeuvres were the excellent, so if you focuses on those for a cocktail party, it should be perfect. MP would be too big for you. 80 in Alger House sounds perfect... i had 95 for a cocktail party w/ only 75% seating. Our total spend was around $14,000 at Alger, $20k for the whole wedding. All of the staff is great, and it's in a really cute spot on Downing St in the west village.

WEDDING VENUE IN NYC, $105 a head without tax and tip. 120 guests. ADVICE PLEASE! The search is on!

You definitely cannot bring your own food to Alger house, and they can only accommodate around 85 if you want all of your guests to have seats. The food, however was great at my wedding there 3 years ago. I had around 95 people there with 80% seating for a cocktail party w/ buffet dinner.

For the OP, i do recommend their sister space, Manhattan Penthouse, once again, as my first post was removed by the moderators, I guess because I did not mention their food. The staff is very helpful, the menu is interesting and accommodating, and I really enjoyed everything I've tasted at both locations. I was at MP in Dec 2008 for a holiday party and got to try a lot of their passed hors d' oeuvres - all delicious.

Le Miu-RIP

Hi everyone - any word on where the Le Miu chef(s) can be found now?

Near Penn Station.... anything?

Stout is a pub but everything I've tried there has been good. I suggest it because it's roomy, clean and I don't think you have to go up any stairs to get in.

Buttercup Bake Shop

Perry Street Cakes is kind of a free-lance (but dept of health inspected!) baker that did my wedding cake. It was delicious, beautiful and definitely affordable. I would definitely order a cake from her again. Her pictures show a lot of fondant but I'm sure a simple birthday cake would be fantastic.

What's good near the Landmark Sunshine movie theater?

Elephant - a thai place w/ interesting cocktails; on 1st St across Houston from Landmark.

Awash / Ethiopian question [moved from Manhattan board]

I ate with some friends last night at Awash in the east village. Most of us were trying Ethiopian for the first time. My question is about the flavor of the bread you eat all the food with. Is it supposed to be vinegary? The bread last night was unenjoyably vinegary - so much that it overpowered the food and I ended up picking at the food with my fingers. Does vinegar somehow keep the bread fresh or moist? And is this was to expect at all Ethiopian restaurants? Because I definitely would have enjoyed it more if they bread had tasted more bland or grainy.

Manhattan/Westchester value wedding

Check out Alger House in the west village. Very reasonably priced, and includes all the wedding set-up and organization you could ever need. Made for a much more fun party than doing it all ourselves.

your favorite dog friendly places to eat

Sidewalk Cafe on 6th & A

Great Rest. Near Alphabet Lounge (104 Ave. C @ 12th St.)

Esperanto is very good. The food tastes a bit more homemade and healthy (less greasy) there. Kitchy decor and tasty drinks.

Porchetta...is it worth the wait?

It might be disappointing if you have to wait (esp if the quality suffers when it's busy). I've stopped in late evenings and really enjoyed the sandwich and brussels sprouts. Definitely worth it with no line.

Winebar-ish place for a first date

3rd G&G - plenty of personal space at a table for 2.

Dhaba in Curry Hill

This place sounds great and I think we'll be trying it tonight. Will we need a reservation? any new recommendations to order? I'll probably just order the mattar paneer I've been craving...

< $150 Romantic Birthday Dinner for Two?

Alta has a great atmosphere, and you could definitely afford more food in that price range than you would at Degustation. I highly recommend it.

If you like sushi, Le Miu has 2 tasting menus ($55, $75), that don't include drinks, but could be worked into your budget. On saturday night my husband and I shared one of each tasting menu plus 2 big bottles of sapporo, and I think the check was $160 + tip. It was a huge amount of food with a great variety of excellent sushi plus a cooked entree and soup.

I just read a nice thread on Terrior, which is a wine bar in the east village. The food sounded great and it looks very cozy inside.

Need Help Finding Grits in New York!!!

Agree that you can find them at grocery stores. But if you're looking for brunch, Grape & Grain in the east village does a great shrimp & grits on the weekends.

Dinner for 8 (below 14th Street)

Check out the menu at Alta. it's a great place for a group because you can share all of the plates. They have a good, decently-priced wine list and delicious sangria drinks.

Patisserie Claude "under new management"

this is great news!

fried wontons (rangoons/wontons w/ cream cheese)

I am obsessed with crab rangoons and base my local stand-by choice on whether they have them or not. I have never seem them with plain cream cheese, though.

Also, note that the plain-sounding "fried wonton" actually just has meat inside; no cream cheese (that's the one that comes with the red goo sauce).

Worst ethnic place you've been to

(sorry, can't get chowhound to not repeat my paragraphs twice in this post)

I think this is a completely valid category. "Ethinic" food is defined by ingredients and styles that were more recently introduced to us Americans from other regions. These new flavors generally become more popular when we see heavier immigration from said region. These are different foods of course, but share the characteristic of often being thought of as unique, foreign and adventuresome to many americans, especially those not living in NYC.

Indian, Thai and Ethiopian do not share the history that seafood, burgers and diner food have here in the states. This is also an interesting discussion (& helpful thread) because, since most people aren't familiar with the traditional preparations of foods from other cultures, it's hard to know if the restaurant you've found is serving an authentic or cheapened version.

Worst ethnic place you've been to

I once tried Spice Cove for some cheap, desperate lunch-time Indian delivery.

- Mango Lassi - fluorescent orange (like thai iced tea) and very syrupy. Not drinkable.
- Korma - fluorescent yellow and very sweet and watery. Tasted bad. Not edible.
- Another curry (maybe mattar paneer?) - same fluorescent yellow color as the korma. a little more edible but not really.

Sushi Delivery in EV / Nolita - Takahachi doesnt deliv.

Hiro might deliver to your area. I've found them to be very good quality with a good variety of appetizers and special rolls. I stick with the basics and find them to be very consistent. I don't think they're as good as takahachi, but they are cheaper and do great delivery... everything's always packed up very nicely. and they're open for lunch.

Barnyard - holy crap, Ave C is getting a cheese shop!

Barnyard's really been filling out lately with new cheeses, olive and nut mixes and some prepared foods. The sandwiches are a little expensive but they've all been tasty. Guacamole looked good, and it looks like they have some homemade tortilla chips, too.

Cupcakes are from Crumbs. I also tried a pecan pie they had out on Thurs night, which was great.

allen & delancey

This sounds a lot like my experience. The food was fantastic, but I was freezing! Even stranger than entering such a dark room is leaving while it's still light outside. I would definitely go back to sit at the bar for a special occasion drink and appetizer.

best reasonably priced tasting menu??

My vote is for Degustation. Very reasonable and very delicious. If it's not filling, you can always order more.

I bet Wallse would be great; never tried the tasting menu there.
