Nigella Sticky Toffee Pudding question

I ended up making it in a deep dish pie plate and it turned out well. It's not really sticky toffee pudding, but it was easy and people seemed to like it. Will make a more traditional recipe next time.

any restaurants in London serving gull's eggs?

By chance I've been trolling around menus in preparation for a trip in July, and Quo Vadis in Soho has them.

Nigella Sticky Toffee Pudding question

I'm planning on making the Nigella Lawson Sticky Toffee Pudding recipe. It calls for a 1 1/2 liter baking dish (approximately 1 1/2 quarts). The picture accompanying the recipe looks like a a ceramic pie plate. But aren't most pudding dishes deeper? For those who have made this, what kind of baking dish did you use?

Creme fraiche Ice Cream

I'm making sticky toffee pudding, and thought creme fraiche ice cream would pair well, as the dessert is very sweet. Problem is, I don't feel like making it myself. Does anyone know where to buy some in SF? Already checked Birite Creamery and they're not making it right now.

2011 - Let's talk turkey

I have a BN heritage bird this year, but would like to cook a breast as well, for leftovers and to appease the white meat lovers in the crowd. Was thinking Willie Bird, but it seems hard to find in San Francisco. Diestel appears more common, and I've seen Mary's but I don't love their chicken. Any thoughts on which would be better for non-heritage bone in breast?

Good place to buy scotch in the east bay ?

Yes. This is the former Mr. Liquor. Quite a nice selection.

Best place to eat in Hayes Valley, pre-symphony

Hayes St. Grill for fish, Bar Jules, Absinthe (sitting in the bar is fun) and the new Boxing Room are all good. Caveat is that I know virtually nothing about vegetarian choices at any of these places (also Hayes St. would be perfect for a Pescetarian).

Excellent Jewish Deli?

Sorry to tell you there is nothing excellent, or even approaching excellent in these parts. That said, I would put Miller's in the acceptable category.

There is also a pop-up Jewish deli, Wise Sons, that's open on Saturday from 9-2. http://www.wisesonsdeli.com/ I've only been once, and thought they had good intentions, but it was definitely a work in progress. The rye bread was very good.

Hatch Chiles back

Any more of these around? I thought I bought a sufficient quantity, but seem to be running through my stash faster than I thought!

Boxing Room, Hayes Valley

Went here pre-opera the other night and had a very nice meal. We started with the boudin balls, which are like arancini made with dirty rice. Tasty little guys. I had an oyster dish as an appetizer which was kind of like Oysters Rockefeller without the spinach. Good, though a bit pricy at $9.00 for three oysters. Mrs. Mrs. Bacon had a fried oyster and greens salad and enjoyed it. For mains, the Mrs. had the crawfish etouffee and I tried the fried chicken served with mashed potatoes, a porky gravy, and corn in a tomato sauce with little bits of baconish items. We really liked the crawfish dish; the tomato sauce had a really nice depth of flavor. At first I found the breading on my chicken a bit ponderous, but after a few bites and a sprinkling of Crystal hot sauce (which they serve at the table with the label removed) I really warmed up to the chicken. Both sides were also delicious. We finished the meal with decent beignets and nice Sightglass drip coffee. Will definitely return.

fresh cannellini beans - help please?

Treat them the same as dried, but no soaking necessary, and they will be fully cooked in about 40 minutes. I've gotten several pounds of them since they've become available. I shell and freeze them for later use.

Prime rib in SF other than HOPR?

I think the prime rib at Harris' is very good.

Hatch Chiles back

chezzaSF, I found them at Lucky's on Fulton and Masonic (there's also one on Sloat) at the sale price of $.97 per pound. The ad says they're organic.

Hatch Chiles back

I think I want to grab a few more pounds at Lucky's to freeze. What's the consensus on roasting, then freezing. Should I remove the seeds after roasting (saw one article that said it was easier to remove the seeds before)? Leave the skin on for freezing?

Hatch Chiles back

Scored a couple pounds in SF today. Might go back for more!

Anniversary trip--Looking for recommendations and comments

Great choices. Have fun and report back!

Bar Bambino and Gitane

I'm trying to decide where to take the spouse (Mrs. Mrs. Bacon?) for her birthday dinner. Haven't been to either of these yet, and we want to try something new. Want to keep it rather casual, so both seem to fit that bill. Any thoughts on which to choose and standout dishes we need to order?

Zinfandel in southern Sonoma/Napa counties

What about Ravenswood? Their single vineyard zins are generally quite good.

5 hours in the Mission - an eye on variety.

I do not think Mission Chinese is awful at all. I actually enjoy it. Just another opinion.

AT&T (inside the) Park

Go for the dogs/brats that are done on the grill, rather than the pre-made ones.

The chili dogs are OK from the Irish Pub stand and Hebrew National, if a bit messy (and the superior Coney Island Dog stand closed a couple years ago.

any sour cherries yet?

Thanks for the heads up. Grabbed a couple packs of these. Now the pitting begins!

Trip to your city: I've picked a dozen resturaurants — you pick the 13th.

I happen to really like Mission Chinese, which is controversial on this board. Just ate there last night, actually. The cumin lamb, Mongolian onglet, and salt and pepper shrimp all were very tasty.

Second on the donut shop across the street. Actually, the fried chicken is surprisingly pretty decent too. You can take any food into the ballpark, except cans, bottles and booze.

I've only been to Baker and Banker once, so my opinion might not be completely reliable. I honestly cannot remember what I ate there, only that my impression was that I would not be running back.

Broken Record has a bar in the front and a restaurant in the back. It's all very basic, not very pretty, but I've had a burger, pulled pork sandwich and crawfish and grits that were very tasty. There's nothing intrinsically non kid-friendly about the place, other than the fact that it's a bar.

If your wife is from Campania, I would recommend A16, and not just for the burrata.

Marin Sun Farms Pastrami?

Has anyone tried the pastrami from Marin Sun Farms? I noticed it this morning at the farmers' market, but didn't pull the trigger on a package.

Where to buy - need good source for short rib meat or other thin sliced beef?

I've gotten good short ribs, cut for Korean style BBQ at the meat counter in Cal Mart.

Please avoid The Stinking Rose. It is nothing more than a tourist trap, and you have some wonderful places on your list. I'm not a huge fan of Baker and Banker, but it's not terrible either. Maybe Zuni for a similar style? I might add a Mission taqueria to your list, but you indicated that you're going to Southern CA, which is really the place for Mexican. You say you're not opposed to divey places. Broken Record in a far-flung corner of the city is my current favorite dive bar with delicious food. Too bad about La Ciccia. Perhaps A16 or SPQR for another Italian?
