Sunday Gravy

I had the Sunday Gravy at Marliave about a year ago and it was delicious.

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 1st quarter 2012 [old]

Oh I did not like the lobster ravioli in the refrigerator case either.......flavor wasn't anything I want to taste again.

Trader Joe's Most Favored Products of 2011

I thought the frozen palak paneer was pretty bland and underwhelming

Trader Joe's Yea/Nay Thread - 1st quarter 2012 [old]

Yay for the goddess dressing, the frozen paneer tikka masala, the canned turkey chili, the pomegranate Hansen's soda, and the guiltless tortilla chips

NAY for the frozen palak (sp?) paneer....too bland

Dim sum and lunch buffet at Fuloon?

The weekend dim sum buffet consists of a few dim sum items on a buffet table. I would not think of it as anything to go out of your way for. The weekday buffet is mostly dumbed down Chinese food that is usually lukewarm and pretty underwhelming.

New Zealand Mussels?

They have them at Super 88/Hong Kong Supermarket in Dorchester and in Malden :-) Just picked some up yesterday in Malden for $5.99 a box

Finding a lobster dinner in Boston

If you join the email club Mt. Vernon gives out coupons for cheaper lobster dinners. I got one yesterday that offers the twin lobster special for $12.99

They may have meant King Do Baguette and Pastry

What's the best dish you've ever eaten at a chain? What surprised you most?

I do like the chicken at Popeye's but I do not see it as being as wonderful as most people here. To me it is just OK. I also tried the Thai lettuce wraps at Cheesecake Factory and found them to be just OK too. Has anyone tried the Vietnamese Tacos at Cheesecake factory. I am curious about them but afraid I will not like them and feel like it was a waste of money.

Boston Area Chinese Buffet

Mandarin Buffet in Chelsea is related to China Buffet in Saugus. Yutaka has different owners :-)

Boston Area Chinese Buffet

They have nigiri and maki at lunchtime and at dinner they expand the options and include sashimi. They have about 8-10 plates with sushi and they have sushi on these two large boats in the evenings.

Boston Area Chinese Buffet

Yutaka Buffet is fairly new and it is on Rte. 60 in Revere. I have been there several times and I have always enjoyed it. Great sushi and Chinese food. It is a Japanese/Chinese buffet.

What's the best sit-down chain dish you've ever had?

Chili's used to serve a dish called Citrus Fire Chicken and Shrimp. I would order it every single time I went there for 3-4 years straight. It was chicken and shrimp marinated and served over rice with veggies on the side. Delicious.

Marliave for RW -- HELP!

For my meal I chose the escargot for a first course, the Sunday gravy for the second course, and the cheese plate for my third course. The escargot was delicious. It was drowned in garlicky olive oil and sprinkled with cheese. It was my first time having escargot and based on the experience it will not be my last. The Sunday gravy was good. The meat and gnocchi were delightfully tender and the sauce was nice. As for the cheese plate, I liked it a lot. There were three cheeses, walnuts, and lavender honey on the plate. The lavender honey was fantastic and tasted totally different than I had imagined. I really enjoyed it although one of the cheeses was definitely not something I EVER want to experience again (It was much too funky for my taste). My sister had the mac and cheese, shrimp scampi, and mixed berries. Her food was tasty too but she did not enjoy the linguine that accompanied the scampi.

Marliave for RW -- HELP!

Thank you for the tips all. Me and my sis went to lunch at Marliave today and we really enjoyed ourselves. The food was very tasty and the atmosphere was pretty casual and comfy. I will definitely be back during a regular week to enjoy more of the menu.

Marliave for RW -- HELP!

I have never done RW before and I have a 1:00 reservation for lunch at Marliave. I am a bit petrified because I have never even been to a restaurant that would require a reservation. I have a few questions I need some help with. If I do not want to drink alcohol what else do they offer to drink (Probably a dumb question but I would really like to know)? Open Table says it is business casual dress, so would what I would normally wear to work for an office job be appropriate? Is there anything else I should know. I was planning on ordering the RW meal for me and my sis, the pate appetizer, and a cocktail for me (she is pregnant, which is why I asked the non-alcohol question). I also planned on tipping 20-25%. HELP! I just want to get this right without making a fool of myself.

Umbria - overcharging for bottles of wine

Bob I think we were separated at birth because I thought the same thing.

I was supposed to go to Umbria next week for RW but I think I will cancel that reservation now and just keep the one for Marliave.

Me and my 11 yr old have a blast at Little Q

What does the Mongolian broth taste like? I have only tried the spicy, the miso, and the black bone chicken at Little Q.

Boston_Otter-- You make me wish there was a Facebook like button for your post :-)

Deciphering local Chinese delivery

LOL. That would make sense. Then you would know what you would NOT be getting. I am not a huge chow mein or chop suey fan myself so i understand. I do like the chow mein at Sun Kong in Malden though...go figure.

Deciphering local Chinese delivery

Chicago style chop suey has very large pieces of vegetables instead of the traditional thin pieces. It is also brown in color and I believe the items have been fried. The pieces are very wide and large. Subgum style means more of a variety of veggies.

Where to buy Pork Belly?

You can always find pork bellies at McKinnon's in Everett and Somerville too.

I believe it is called Bo 7 Mon. I have always wanted to try it but never got around to it.

Trip Report From NYC Hound: Drink, Eastern Standard, Flour Bakery, B&G Oysters, Butcher Shop, Craigie on Main, Mike & Patty's, Modern Pastry, Neptune Oyster

Thank you for such a thorough well written report :-) I may not ever even go to any of these places but your descriptions were fantastic. Thank you.

Where to get Jamaican Browning Sauce?

I used to see it all the time at Tropical Foods on Washington Street in Roxbury. I believe the brand name was Blue Mountain.

Where's the Best Fried Chicken in Boston Area?

The chicken I had there did not look visibly burned at all but it tasted very very scorched. I pan fry chicken all the time and I have never had any taste like this that was not burned.

Bad Meal @ Indigo Boxx Newton

Bokx 109 is supposed to be some special code used my meatpackers/butchers for a particular cut of meat. Yes the name sounds very dumb...lol. I read this explanation in the Boston Phoenix when the restaurant first debuted.

Chopped, 8.10.10

I wanted anyone to win but her...lol. I was rooting for Yoanne though. I was disappointed when she was chopped.
