Connie's Creamy Cone is open

Drove by yesterday and saw they were open. Couldn't resist getting a small chocolate shake. Mmmmm.

According to their website, they've been open since March 11th. www.connyscreamycone.com/

Asian Deli at 388 Western - What a GEM

Heads up that they are changing their hours again. They'll be closing at 3pm starting March 3rd (I believe). Big bummer for me as this is a favorite dinner location for the kid and I.

Saigon Closed. Reopening "soon" - with new owners

Really glad to hear the same staff are there. The two guys who usually wait tables love to tease my daughter and she loves to get riled up.

Our State Fair 2011: it's the Best State Fair in our State!

Got to admit. That one caught my eye.

This is my daughter's first year at the Fair. Can't wait to see what draws her eye. I showed her the Fair's "Food Love" ad last night and her eyes were a big as saucers.

Where to take a non-Westerner for the most "American" food experiences? Must be baby-friendly.

Thinking in my neighborhood,
Day by Day Cafe is very baby friendly, especially the patio but also the library room.
Mancini's, if she wants an old school vibe. Not super baby friendly, but if you go for an early dinner, you'll be fine.
How about Chris and Robs for a hot dog. Agreed, that's classic American and needs to be tried.
I'm a fan of Burger Moe's hamburgers. And their patio is gorgeous. They've got good milkshakes and fries, too.

Pity she won't be here during the State Fair.

Omakase for a Birthday

Fuji Ya in St Paul lists Omakase for two on their menu.

I want to put in a good word for Sakura, too. My daughter and I went for sushi. I requested an omakase and put a price limit of $30 on it (not a lot of wiggle room there). I was so pleased with what I got. The fish were the same as my daughter's standard sushi dinner, but the prep was unique on all of them and was very tasty and creative. One had a lovely green leaf in it, sort of spicy and fresh. One had what tasted like pepper, but very floral - maybe grains of paradise? Given how little I could afford, it was a wonderful experience.

Best outdoor patios in Twin Cities

Did anyone else know that Cheeky Monkey now has a patio? Stopped by for takeout yesterday and was surprised to see signs pointing to a patio out back. (not the tables out front).

Very cute space. Fenced in. Some tables and some couches. Plus they've got water out there (a big plus for me). Looking forward to going back and checking it out.

MSP Review: Keefer Court Bakery & Cafe

Thanks for the bump up. Went for my first dine in experience last night. Had the soy sauce chicken. Fantastic! Salty and savory. Daughter got the beef fried rice and we split some bun and some apps. Her favorite was the sticky rice bun. Super savory and tasty. I was lucky to get a bite.

Asian Deli at 388 Western - What a GEM

Just another in the chorus of love...

Had guests in town and we visited Duluth. While there, we had some very bad thai food. Was wonderful to get back to MSP and take them to Asian Deli and confirm that we can do asian food really well. Tasty, fresh, big portions and reasonable prices. Plus - the service is always wonderful and speedy (which was good, since my guests had a flight to check.)

I love Seward Coop

Me, too. I'm there at least once a week to buy for that week's meals. Great produce and meats. And I love that I can do a whole shopping trip there. No need to shop three different places to get what I need.

Dining up and down University Avenue

Went to Russian Tea House on Friday. As stated, they are feeling good still and loving their customers. Ordered a bit of everything. My 16 year old declared the piroshki "a Masterpiece" (this after refusing to touch it at first).

Had the vereneki (potato stuffed dumplings) with sauteed onions and with stroganoff sauce. The onions were perfect, sweet and buttery. The stroganoff was fine but not as rich as I remember.

I wanted to add my thanks to the general din.

Took my kid here and it's her new favorite spot. Love their spring rolls even more than Saigon's. She really likes their beef fried rice and has also given a thumbs up to the special pho.

Thanks for the heads up.

Best Pho?

Pho Ca Dao was still there as of 5 months ago.

I usually wind up a Saigon for pho, since my new daughter likes the beef fried rice and spring rolls there the best.

Not sure of the bottomless mug, but Copper Dome (Randolph and Hamline in St Paul) has lots of atmosphere and closes at 3pm.

I've gotten pancakes there and enjoyed them.

Restaurants everyone loves--except you

Had the dim sum two weeks ago (kind of by accident). Was not impresses. Selection was average, most things were too doughy or greasy and atmosphere was...just not dim summy (you know, when there's that hum of "what's coming next?").

There was also a similarity of taste to the 4 or 5 things we tried that was off putting.

St Paul delivery?

Hopefully your friend is out of the hospital

But related to St Paul delivery, I was happy to note recently that John's Pizza Cafe (on the little wedge off Como and Dale) delivers AND has online ordering.

Twin Cities street food

Specifically in reference to whether the bulk of our current food carts are "subsidized" by a brick and mortar store...

Based on the recent article in Heavy Table (which lists carts and who's running them) and if you include Foxy Falafel (don't know why it got overlooked), it's split down the middle.

Half the carts got started as a mobile version of a standing restaurant. Half started without.

Burger Moe's

Went to Burger Moe's yesterday for lunch. The porch is still lovely. Service was fine (a bit over attentive, but that may have just been a reflection of my desire for some quiet time).

Had the Denny Burger (cheese, bacon, fried egg + lettuce, tomato and red onion) with a side of onion rings and a chocolate milkshake.

Burger was excellent. Very juicy (you can even see the drippings soaking into the bun in the picture). The bacon was especially good, very thick and peppery, but severing cleanly with a bite. The yolk was still molten and added to the yum. It was a messy but very tasty lunch. (fyi - the photo shows cucumbers on the burger - they came as a garnish and I added them to the burger.)

The onion rings were crunchy and a little greasy. The onion inside was fully cooked (which is how I prefer them). They stayed together when you ate them, rather than shattering or having the onion pull out of the batter. Batter had some oomp to it, which worked well in this case.

Milkshake was good, very smooth and creamy, not a ton of chocolate taste. It came with spoon and straw. I like mine a bit more loose, I'm more of a drinker than an eater of milkshakes.

Lunch came to $15 w/o tip. And I headed back to work fuller and happier.
