Early dinners

I am traveling to Rome, Florence and Tuscany next month. I've sourced what should be some great restaurants through this board, but it seems that most restaurants don't open for dinner until 7:30 p.m. I'll be travelling with two younger kids, and this will be difficult for us. So, I'm wondering if anyone has some favorites in these cities that might serve dinner earlier. Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Rome with kids -- need to make two days of meals count!

I will have two days in Rome with my wife and two kids, ages 8 and 10. They are well behaved, good eaters. I need to make the most of our precious meals (likely two lunches and two dinners). We are not looking for fine dining, but would appreciate suggestions for the best local, authentic Italian fare (we're fine going to a tourist spot, but would rather eat where the locals eat). My kids are big pasta eaters, and we need to show them (and ourselves) the best of this city. We will not have a car, and will likely be staying near the Spanish steps, so location in that area or near public transportation would be ideal.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Thanksgiving -- looking for interesting pre-made food

I recall reading about this in prior years. Thanks for the reminder. Unfortunately, I'm not sure the turkey will travel well to Michigan with me -- but given how much I love their duck, it might be worth a try!

Thanksgiving -- looking for interesting pre-made food

I will be traveling to the Lakeside/Union Pier area for Thanksgiving, and am looking to bring some good (preferably pre-made) Thanksgiving-oriented food from Chicago, other than just plain turkey. Any thoughts on where to get a good turkey cassoulet, maybe a turducken, or something else that might impress the crowd besides just plain old turkey.

Thanks for any thoughts on this.

Christmas Day in London -- not finding much

Experience from other major cities around the world. Many ethnic restaurants are closed, but I've found a good many that will remain open. And yes, I've had to search hard for museums and other things to do from Dec. 24-26, but fortunately London's a big place with lots to do (except for Christmas Day itself!).

Christmas Day in London -- not finding much

I'll be in a hotel. Not surprisingly, many hotel restaurants seem to be open Christmas Day.

Christmas Day in London -- not finding much

Thanks all for the helpful suggestions. I've been searching on Google a lot, but am running into high priced set menus. The Chinese options sound good, and I'll check out TopTable as well -- looks like many of the hotel restaurants are open, which is not too surprising.

Christmas Day in London -- not finding much

I will be in London (staying near Holbon tube station) over Christmas, and have been spinning my wheels searching for a good place for dinner on December 24 and 25. I will be with younger kids, and am not looking for a set menu with expensive prices. Really I'd be happy with a good Chinese or Indian restaurant that takes reservations and is serving their regular menu.

Any suggestions for these or other options would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Brunch for 15?

Looking for a solid Saturday brunch spot for 15 people (10 adults, five kids). Needs to impress a bunch of out of towners and their young kids. I was thinking about the private room at GT Fish, but they've got a high minimum that we probably won't meet. Looking for something near downtown, Lincoln Park, or Bucktown/WP that can comfortably accommodate us.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

One day near Creve Coeur in STL

I will be in the Creve Coeur area for the day, and will have time for lunch on the way from the airport and time for dinner that night -- so I need to make it count! I will have a car, but need to stick with something in the general area. Looking for great local places. BBQ, Italian, or other options -- would prefer holes in the wall over fancy.

I'd greatly appreciate any suggestions.

Staying downtown -- transportation to Lockhart, etc.

Thanks. Read about Pecan Lodge, but unfortunately don't think I'll have that long for lunch.

Will it be easy to catch a taxi back downtown from Lockhart or Smoke? (Will I need to call for a taxi?)

Staying downtown -- transportation to Lockhart, etc.

I will be visiting mid-week and staying at the Adolphus downtown. I'd like to check out Lockhart, Smoke, and some other places I've read about on this board in the evening. I will not have a car. Will it be easy to take a taxi back and forth to these places? Anywhere comparable within walking distance downtown?

Thanks for any thoughts.

1st time visitor -- near downtown or convention center

Thanks for asking me to clarify. I'll likely be staying at the Ritz-Carlton, but will be working near the convention center near the seaport.

Thanks again!

1st time visitor -- near downtown or convention center

I will be making a first time visit to Boston, and staying near downtown and/or the convention center. I will not have a car. I am looking for the best local food Boston has to offer, that are can't miss places for a first time visit. I'm not looking for fine dining -- just the best in those areas for chowder, seafood, and other local favorites (old school, holes in the wall are fine, if not prefered).

Thanks for your thoughts, Boston!

Lake Buena Vista local dining

I will be traveling to Disneyworld in a couple weeks with two young kids, and staying in Lake Buena Vista. Looking for good restaurants outside Disneyworld, including but not limited to any good local pizza/italian joints (delivery would be a plus -- we will have a kitchen), or even a good local place to fuel up with coffee in the morning before heading to Disney

We will have a car, but at the end of the day I expect we won't want to drive more than 10 minutes or so.

Thanks for any suggestions.

p.s. any great suggestions for eating at the Disney parks are welcomed (looking for decent value and a place our kids will like -- other than the character meals).

Client dinner not far from Loop

Looking for a good place to dine with a client Thursday night, preferably not too far from Union Station. Proposed Grocery Bistro, but I think that might be too "foodie" for them. Looking for something with a simpler menu, not too expensive, but in the moderate price range (Grocery Bistro had the benefit of being BYOB). Marche is an option, but I am looking for something newer that I haven't tried yet.

Thanks for any suggeestions.

Lunch near Webster and Clyborn?

Webster Place isn't too far from Bucktown, where you may have some more interesting options (e.g., Britsol, Hot Chocolate, etc., etc.).

South Beach with kids; then Williams Island

I will be in the South Beach area over x-mas week, and am looking for restaurant recommendations. Nothing specific, just really good food -- can be a dive, or a nicer place, although I will be travelling with a well-behaved 4 and 6 year old. Any standard places that might be recommended for visitors.

Also, if you have recs. for anything near Williams Island., where we will also be staying, I would appreciate it. Last time took a drive to Le Tub, which we loved; but that's the extent of my knowledge.

Thanks for any suggestions.

Dressler with kids?

Can I take two well-behaved kids (4 and 6 yrs. old) to Dressler? I am visiting Brooklyn and would like to take our kids (and more importantly my wife and I) to a nice dining establishment at least one night.

And if you have taken kids there, would the restaurant be accomodating in modifying anything on the menu for them?

Thanks for any thoughts, or any comparable recommendations you might have.

Mexican Coke

There are plenty of Mexican grocery stores in Wicker Park/Bucktown that carry Mexican coke (assume you mean in the bottle), including Danny's on Western, and number of stores on Ashland. Most sell individual bottles, but I have seen it sold in larger quantities. If you live in that area, it might be more convenient than N. Riverside.

Chinatown on Dec. 24/25

Duly noted, and thanks for the warning. Do you think x-mas eve might be the time to go, or maybe go for dim sum around 10 a.m. x-mas day?

I am guessing it will be crowded whenever we go, and we will be sure to go any general shopping or walking around in that area on a different day altogether.

Anything new in DUMBO?

We will be staying at a relative's place in DUMBO x-mas week. It has been over two years since we've been there last. Has anything new opened in the past couple years that is worth checking out? Can be high-end, low-end, or even a grocery store -- just don't want to miss any new additions that might be worth checking out.

Thanks.

Chinatown on Dec. 24/25

I understand your point about no atmosphere. I would make the same comment about Chicago's Chinatown that we frequently visit. But at least some of the dumpier places there have good old school Chinatown feel, if that makes any sense.

Anyway, yes, it sounds like one of the biggest issues may be finding a place that takes reservations or will not be too packed (as my kids can't wait in line for that long).

Chinatown on Dec. 24/25

I am traveling with my wife and two young kids to NY for the holidays. We would like to dine in Chinatown on Christmas Eve or maybe dim sum on Christmas day.

Any suggestions? We are looking for both good food and good atmosphere -- doesn't matter whether it's a higher end place or a dump, as long as its good (I am assuming most places will be open over the holiday). My kids are happy with fried rice, so I'm not too worried about what they wil eat.

Thanks.

Thanksgiving Dinner -- something different

For our last family holiday dinner, we served a large brisket from Smoque, which was a huge success. This Thanksgiving, we are looking for a repeat performance. Any thoughts on where we could pick up a great pre-cooked Turkey (or related food items) for Thanksgiving. We're not looking for just a plain old Turkey, but something a little more unique. Even a good fried Turkey, or maybe a good Turducken would fit the bill.

Any thoughts are appreciated.

Thanks.
