Saffron in downtown Durham/ Brightleaf square -when?

The website for Brightleaf Square suggests Saffron will be opening at some point in the future. Does anyone know when? And will this be an offshoot of the Indian restaurant in Raleigh and Chapel Hill? Thanks for any info you can pass along.

Gourmet Kingdom (Carrboro) issues?

I ate there last month and it was as good as ever. I think this is by far the best restaurant in Chapel Hill/Carrboro. We are so lucky to have it!

Best Lunch in East 30s or 40s

I'm meeting a friend for lunch near Park and 40th, and I'm looking for recommendations. My friend is mostly a vegetarian; I'm an omnivore. We are open to any cuisine nearby--Korean, Indian, French bistro, Iranian...doesn't matter to us. I'm not interested in a fancy atmosphere but don't mind paying a little more for a wonderful meal. Thanks.

Good ricotta in Triangle?

i've been looking for fresh ricotta. most places have ricotta in plastic containers, but it's not fresh (ie. just made on premises or nearby). i tried weaver street and the local farmer's market in carrboro but neither had it. if you do find it, i'd love to know. thanks so much!

Please Consider Creating "Triangle Area" Subsection for U.S. South

The Triangle Area (Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill and surrounding region) has been growing rapidly over the past decade, esspecially the past 5 years, and it would be terrific if we had a board devoted to the area. Just this year, the New York Times recognized the Triangle as a food-lover destination, and a number of our local chefs have been gaining national and global attention. Given all the great food and many foodies in the area, and the vastness of the jurisdiction of "South", a subsection of South just for the Triangle Area would be wonderful. Thanks very much for considering this request.

food-obsessed considering move to Phoenix (orig. from NYC, lived in and loved CA)

Is there a neighborhood (with some residential options) known for the highest concentration of truly good restaurants and/or where restaurants tend to stay open a bit later? I'm considering a move to Phoenix for work and am visiting soon to check out neighborhoods.

I'd love to find an area where I could walk to a handful of non-chain restaurants, bars, and coffee shops, if that can be found in downtown Phoenix or elsewhere. And if there were a nearby light rail stop, that would be a terrific bonus. Thanks very much.

Middle Eastern Markets

I'm new to DC, also without a car, and have been planning to buy some olive oil at a Middle Eastern shop. If you have any plans to go this weekend, I'd be glad to split the cost of the cab ride from the metro. Let me know if you might be interested. Thanks.

Persian Food in Orange County

Is Darya as good as Zagat suggests? Any other recommendations? Thanks.

Looking for Farm that Will Send CA Citrus to NY

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. There are still wonderful blood oranges to be found. I sent my sister a 5 lb box from www.grovestand.net, and she said they were excellent, just as delicious and juicy as ever.

Looking for Farm that Will Send CA Citrus to NY

i had understood that there were different kinds and that this is still the right season for some, but please tell me if you believe that's incorrect.

New to Orange County - where to eat?

Chinese. For dim sum better than I've ever had in New York (b/c the ingredients taste fresher though it's otherwise just like NY), I recommend New Capital Seafood Restaurant in Rosemead. Worth the trip to LA county.

Also, as a native NY-er who's now been in Orange County for a little over half a year, I want to add that, because the quality of the local produce puts NY to shame, I now believe the eating options in Southern California are generally better than back east.

Looking for Farm that Will Send CA Citrus to NY

I'd like to send a gift of roughly 5-10 pounds of blood oranges to a friend in New York. I've found some possibilities including grovestand.net and www.ripetoyou.com, but I've don't know anyone who's ever tried the former, and the latter only sends in fairly large shipments (which results in huge mailings costs).

If you have shipped CA fruit with success, I'd be grateful if you could recommend the farm or company you used. If possible, I'd love to support a smaller, local farm (I'm in Orange County), and it'd be great to keep costs down, but the most important thing is reliably delicious fruit.

Thanks very much for any suggestions!

Pina's Bistro Pizza Question?

hi. did you ever find out the answer to this question? and is it true there is no pizza at dinner?

food-obsessed moving to DC (orig. from NYC & currently in CA)

Thanks, everyone. This has been very helpful.

Most un-Chowhoundish OC Restaurants

Gypsy Den. I wanted to like it because of the "Friends don't let friends go to Starbucks sign." It's nice that the staff is friendly and will let you loiter, and the options seem somewhat vegetarian-friendly. But I was disappointed when I first went in and every time since when I've tried to give it another chance.

There just appears to be no chef involved in designing the menu or preparing the food. Whoever is in charge has no particular respect for food (no appreciation of how best to prepare it, how to serve it, what combinations are complementary or the opposite, appropriate portion size for side dishes or melted cheese topping, etc.). I know Gypsy Den doesn't claim to be fine dining, but there are plenty of places who do a lot better without charging any more. And it's really not that cheap, given what you're served.

San Diego Must-Eats

Andrew, what did you end up eating? I'll be in San Diego for 2 days, 3 nights (one night of which I'll be eating at a wedding), and I'd love to know which places you thought were best for regional specialties. Thanks!

What Etiquette Do You Expect of Your HOST?

I find it saddening that female relatives so often fight and develop deep resentments towards one another while shouldering the burden of "women's work". I don't mean to be naive about how entrenched are gender roles, nor do I dispute that the average straight women is probably a better cook than her husband. I recognize that there may be generational, cultural, and other differences within any family. But it makes me furious when men "try to help" by making botched attempts to negotiate the relationships between the women in their lives instead of actually pitching in to get the work done. And its even more disappointing when the women then applaud those men.

visitor wants one perfect (and cheap) dinner

i have to disagree. those 6th street places are inexpensive but the food's below average. for your one meal in new york, you deserve a lot better. the real little india in manhattan is on lexington avenue in the high 20s / low 30s, where there's a variety of truly excellent places still reasonably priced. if you had time, i'd also recommend going for indian food queens.

food-obsessed moving to DC (orig. from NYC & currently in CA)

Is there a neighborhood (with some residential options) known for the highest concentration of truly good restaurants and/or where restaurants tend to stay open a bit later? Particular restaurant recommendations are also welcome, though I'll probably post again for specific suggestions after my move in August 07. Thanks.

Best Fresh Fish in South O.C.?

My parents are visiting from NYC, and I'm looking for excellent but reasonably-priced dinner recommendations in south orange county. In particular, I'd love to find fresh fish--no fancy atmosphere, preferably no intrusive sauce or crusted with anything complicated--just some quality fish that will make my dad admit that fish is better on the west coast. (Oh, and he's not really into sushi unfortunately.) Thanks!

Best Mexican in Santa Ana?

what's your favorite place?

New to Orange County - where to eat?

it's so nice to hear about cortina's past. thanks for this history.

Seafood in Newport

My parents are visiting from NYC, and I'm looking for excellent but reasonably-priced dinner recommendations in south orange county. In particular, I'd love to find a good place for fresh fish --no fancy atmosphere, preferably no intrusive sauce or crusted with anything complicated, just some quality fish that might make my dad admit that fish on the west coast is better than that on the east. If it's possible to suggest a place that's fun and serves mussels or other similar appetizers, that would be a plus but not at all required. Thanks for any advice you can offer.

New to Orange County - where to eat?

jgc10, I too moved here from NYC in August 2006 and had a lot of trouble finding good food at first, but things have improved considerably. chowhound has been a big help. and i'm starting to think sushi is better on the west coast; i'd heard people say that before but hadn't believed it.

one great japanese place (not just for sushi, although their sushi is excellent)is Honda-Ya in Tustin. this may sound silly to the non-ny-ers among us, but Honda-Ya felt like home.

What I've missed most in California is Northern Italian. (I went to the Italian section of San Francisco and, although there were a couple of nice bakeries, I found the experience mostly disappointing.) But Cortina Italian market in Anaheim is quite good as a place to buy Italian meats, cheeses, olive oil, packaged sweets, etc. Try to get one of the women to help you. The young man (maybe teenage) is very sweet but doesn't know as much. I went to Cortina when I needed ingredients to make ravioli. The woman was very helpful and talked to me about my plan of serving ricotta with honey and fruit as dessert.

Next on my list is to find good dim sum. Seafood Paradise was recommended a bunch on chowhound so I plan to try it soon.

Let me know how your food explorations go.

Dim Sum in Orange County?

any recommendations for good dim sum for a saturday or sunday in orange county? i'm from new york and used to canton-style and shanghai-style places, which is what i'd love to find. thanks.
