Callebaut - Guittard - Sharfen Berger Chocolate

Trader joes pound plus bars are some of the better quality especially for the price, otherwise find a friend with a restaurant depot membership if you want larger quantities(10kg) of callebaut.

Cacao Barry Cocoa Powder - Extra Dark

Have you tried lakeside baking supplies? They are a warehouse, but open to the public. Of course you'll need to order a lot if you go this route...

Source for yard eggs?

Yes, I'd agree on the color being completely irrelevent as a lot of eggs in europe have orange yolks just because of the feed. I've found that in a taste comparison the schaner eggs are much richer than regular eggs in a custard, but the yolks arent much more yellow.

I think schaner also do del mar on a Saturday afternoon too, if that is closer.

Looking for a request along transit route

Arent you going to be nearer liberty station? I'd say you were better off going to the TJ's at liberty station and maybe getting a bite to eat at tender greens or one of the other places? Wine steals is a fun place to get a glass of wine.

Recent account of Georges Modern

We recently returned to georges and really enjoyed our experience. I loved the beautiful plating, and the flavors were amazing, I also loved the fish tacos. I particularly liked the lighting in the dining room, the room itself was quite dark, but they used spotlights to light up the table, which worked really well for me. I've found a lot of restaurants are so dark you can hardly see the food!

Permanent market for local farmers?

I'm sure I heard buzz about this happening at liberty station, although I find myself getting caught up in the rock church craziness when I go there and it puts me off a bit:

Where to get bacon without sugar added?

you could pop to fresh and easy on mira mesa boulevard and try the british style bacon, its not as fatty and streaky as the american kind but I dont think that is sweet.

Trader joes are in the process of changing all their bacon since niman ranch pulled all the pork and sent it to chipotle, so they are scrambling for a new supplier. Or at least that is what the guy told me when I asked...

My egg dilema

Wow, what an in depth discussion! I'm a cheerleader for the shaner farm eggs, sold at the little italy farmers market. I find that I can usually perch outside their stand at the 3 min parking at the church and run and get eggs and goodies without getting too caught up in the crowds!

I'm always amazed at how much thicker their shells are, they are actually hard to break sometimes! They also come in wonderful colors, blues and a pretty green in the spring and summer months if you're lucky!

This brings up something that makes me pretty sad, I remember a while back at the la jolla farmers market I asked if they were free range and they didnt even know what I meant and I was very sad. I think its important to ask the vendors as they may be battery eggs that are fed all kinds of rubbish even if they are sold at the farmers market and you'd be better off at your local supermarket.

Any beginning cake decorating class(es) in or near east county SanDiego?

Michaels is definitely the cheapest with their wilton classes, but you also have roz's sweet arts studio up near escondido and amy malone's school of decorating in la mesa for something a little more advanced.

Food packaging in SD- Boxes, bags, jars

I'm a big fan of the chinese takeout containers at smart and final, they have a couple of sizes and they are just plain white and super cheap, although you have to buy a ton. You can then go ahead and customize with stickers etc. They also have a few canning jars. I sometimes buy stuff online from http://www.brpboxshop.com/

Does San Diego suck that much?

I think the pictures of alchemy are in the daytime with no customers, its actually on the darker side, and much more ambient with people in! and its down that 30th street coridoor of yumminess, so you could even couple it with some beers at toronado/hamiltons.

Does San Diego suck that much?

I'm a massive fan of starlite, which is close to old town. The menu changes a lot, there is a lot of local/seasonal there are a few hits and misses but the cocktails are great. I think alchemy does a great job too of sourcing local and seasonal cuisine and I like that it is chilled out but with some super classy dishes. Tender greens is a more inforaml place that I've heard does lots of local stuff.

I'd encourage you to check out the little italy mercado on a saturday morning, thats really fun and there is some lovely produce there.

Candied fruit for a christmas cake

Thanks for the suggestions, it turns out that my favourite local market, Balboa International Market has them, a big container for $5. Need chopping up but they will be great!

I also got some free bread, I guess they are trying to start selling more bread, it kind of looked like a nan, but less greasy with sesame seeds on top. It takes me back to our days of ordering a giant 'table nan' when I grew up in the UK and went for Baltis!

Candied fruit for a christmas cake

I'm getting ready to make my christmas cakes (dont flame me, I know americans feel quite strongly about this!!)

Anyone know a good place to get candied peel? I know the british stores have some small containers for extortionate prices, but maybe there is somewhere else I dont know about? Please no nasty green cherries, ick!

4 1/2 weeks and fine tuning my chow worthy restaurants

I agree that san diego isnt the best for cabs, but as long as you plan a little ahead you should be fine. We have pretty good luck with having the restaurant call one for us, just make sure to tell them 20mins ahead to make sure you're not waiting too long.

Something to consider for a 'pub walk' is that north park is a fun area with quite a few bars, pubs and restaurants, favourites including the toronado, ritual tavern, urban solace. Not sure if the shuttle is still operating up and down 30th, then you could also get to hamiltons, alchemy and others?

Plugara?

Yes, joe pastry is pretty cool! I was extremely surprised to see la plugra butter in Smart and Final in the butter case. I usually shop downtown or at midway, I'm afraid I cant remember which...

Best Three dimensional cake design in San Diego?

I'd suggest sweet cheeks. Charity has done some pretty awesome stuff for them, and on the food network, and I've heard their flavors are pretty good too.

I doubt very much michele coulon would entertain 3d cake designs, however delicious her cakes are!

Babycakes in SD : . Babycakes in NY?

Nope, totally different. You'll have to go up to LA for the real babycakes, although their cakes are a bit variable and extremely expensive, but I really loved the atmosphere in their little shop in NY. I think they are mostly vegan/gluten free. Baby cakes in hillcrest is just a cupcake shop, I've heard people like it there! Surprised they are managing to keep the name!

Almond paste

The only place I've found it reasonably priced is Lakeside Baking Supplies, but I think you have to buy 10lb. I usually use almond meal and sugar, since that is all it is made from. Almond meal is easy to find at one of the middle eastern/persian stores, eg balboa international market, sometimes at north park produce, and also henrys (much more expensive)

Must-Eat San Diego?

Other places include alchemy and tender greens. I love the little italy mercado, but the hillcrest farmers market is pretty good and I've always enjoyed the la jolla one on a sunday morning after a nice brekkie at pannikin, or Harry's if you're feeling old school.

Restaurant supply stores in San Diego?

This place sounds cool, I'll have to check it out!

Another place that has cheap cookware and bakeware is the carlsbad outlet mall, theres a le creuset shop and a couple of cook shops, especially good deal with an AAA card when you get the coupon book. Some of the stuff is a bit shoddy quality, but it might be worth a look!

Sorry to be vague, thanks in advance!

Searching for salad

Have fun! I've mentioned it on lots of other threads, but I also love starlite and alchemy, not exclusively veggie, but always something interesting, and also jyoti byangi (sp?) around adams and 30th, if they are open!

I'm dropping off a cake at avenue 5 on saturday, so I'm guessing they are closed for a wedding, I'd call ahead on that one!
