Help - dinner at PJ Clarkes, no choice

I'm afraid I can't help you with your question but the really sad thing here is that 40 years ago P.J. Clarks in Manhattan had some of the best burgers and Home fries in the City. Even Jackie Kennedy was a regular back then.

Morris Martick RIP

Ditto what Foi Gras said. Never ate there but as a transplanted NY'er and a "foodie", I have tremendous appreciation for Mr. Martik (who I knew of by reputation) and I mourn his passing as well.

Owings Mills restaurant suggestions for college graduation brunch

I've been to MiaCarolina and I won't knock it. The food is reasonably good.
In Owings Mills which for the most part is a vast wasteland of mediocre chain restaurants and even more mediocre non-chains, I would recommend Artful Gourmet Bistro. Quite good and fairly reasonably priced. Check out their menu on the website. For truly excellent (although somewhat high-priced) food, nothing really compares to Linwoods on Reisterstown Rd. just about on the border of Owings Mills and Pikesville.

Sport Bars in Baltimore with good food?

Sports bars with good food.....now that's an oxymoron if I ever heard one!!!

Chazz A Bronx Original

Has anyone been here to Chazz Palmintieri's place yet?. Just wondering if it's worth a visit. Always looking for a good NY style pizza place

Baltimore restaurant suggestions for a soon-to-be bride?

You can do close to $40 a person at Petit Louis Bistro in Roland Park, a sister restaurant of Charleston. Tends to be a bit crowded though so I'm not sure about the noise level. Great wine list with lots of choices.

Freddys Lobster and Clams coming to Bethesda soon

Belly clams.....OMG. I'm driving down from Baltimore for some.

PJ Clarkes -- K Street Now Open

I'm a transplanted New Yorker living in Baltimore. Used to frequent PJ's on 3rd Ave back in the late 60's,early 70's. Jackie O and others used to drop in. hamburgers were great and so were the hash brown potatoes. Visited the NY place again about 2 years ago. Needless to say, Jackie O was gone and so unfortunately were the great burgers and potatoes. can't imagine the new DC place is much better.

Good rye bread?

I'm no maven but Wegmans does a pretty good rye bread. Offered w or w/o caraway seeds.

restuarants near State Office Bldgs/MICA in Baltimore

There isn't very much in the immediate area. You might want to consider Sammy's. A good italian rest. on Charles st. within walking distance. And you can stay under $20 if you watch what you order and don't have any wine or liquor with the meal. Check their website.

"Hard Rolls"

Can't get a good "kaiser' or hard roll anywhere today. What most places call kaiser rolls remind me of Wonder bread masquerading as a roll.

Authentic Lox in the Northern VA/DC Area

The Pastrami is quite good. Juicy and fatty and guaranteed to raise your cholesteral level by 40 points. While Corned Beef might be best served lean, (not fond of it so I don't really know) pastrami most definitely should not be lean if you want to really enjoy the taste of it.

Authentic Lox in the Northern VA/DC Area

I believe Cleveland Dave meant "Attman's" and it probably is the closest thing around to Katz's on Houston St. That's pronounced "house-ton" street for all of the non-new yawkers out there.

Wegmans in Germantown

I love Wegmanns and detest Giant but FYI, the Wegmans in Hunt Valley has automated checkouts. There's really nothing wrong with them but IMHO folks ought to be given lessons and pass a test before they try and use them. Can't tell you how much time I've wasted in line at Giant waiting for folks to try and figure out how to use them. And, by the way, Wegmans always has at least one staff member at the automated machines available to help newbies.

Where can i buy Duck/ Goose Liver in DC

You might want to try Dean and Deluca. It;s just a guess so I'd suggest calling first. If they do have it be assured you'll probably be paying the highest price around for it.

Baltimore rec needed

With no slight at all intended towards Hon who is very knowledgable, I think Mama's, while good doesn't quite measure up to Ryleighs in Federal Hill.(also with no view) But I guess that's why some folks like chocolate and others vanilla.

Non touristy Italian restaurant in Baltimore?

Sotta Sopra or Sammy's Trattoria corner of Charles and W. Biddle

where to buy lobster in baltimore?

Wegmans is ordinarily in the 9.99-10.99 range depending on size. They've been as low as 7.99 when the lobsters have moulted and shells are softer. Grauls also has a lobster tank on Padonia rd. prices a dollar or two higher.

Michael Wagner?

Look into Via Mia in Glen Burnie......I think he opened a place there. At least that's what I was able to find. Hoooray for Google !!!!!

Juniper Berries - Where to buy around Baltimore?

A sort story. Many yrs. ago, a friend of mine who was a scientist and I stopped by his lab. Took some of the high grade alcohol they used for experiments, cut it in half with highly filtered water in the lab, crushed some juniper berries, (it was an agricultural resaerch facility) and, VOILA...instant gin. Quite good believe it or not.

Split Top (New England) Hot Dog Buns

Wegmans, at least at the Hunt Valley store.

Survey: What are the best grocery stores?

I moved here to MD. in "87 from NY metro area. Giant (under different ownership) was a revelation and I thought it was outstanding.
Today?...I use the local Giant like a 7/11. If I need one or two things I'll stop in because it's convenient. Otherwise it's Wegmans beyond any doubt even though it's about a 12 mile trip each way.

Frustrated in Rockville -- why can't I get a decent deli sandwich?

Yes...that's exactly what I meant (Vace). My mistake

Frustrated in Rockville -- why can't I get a decent deli sandwich?

The bread throughout the area that's used on sandwichs' is perfectly awful. If you want something really awful try and order a meatball hero on italian. It's like eating meatballs on a loaf of Wonder bread. Halfway through and the sauce has turned the bread into something that resembles a waterlogged sponge. On the plus side, Vaccaro's for one uses a tasty, firm and somewhat crusty bread for their sandwich.

Pizza in Baltimore

fugggedaboudit....it doesn't exist. Not by the slice and and not entire pizzas either. The best you'll do is come close to a mediocre NY pizza. And that's not saying much.

Baltimore - Cross Keys area

Lawhound......I saw your comment about Tarks and while I don't disagree at all, what does that say about Baltimore Mag's new top 50 list which gives them a fairly high rating?...I was surprised they even made the list.

Attman's Deli

As a transplanted NY'er I have to agree that Attman's is better than most and just about as good as the best NY deli's. Hate to rain on the parade but you might be interested in this. The NY Times has been running some stories on the amt. of salt in restaurant food. (due to Mayor Bloomerg's desire to impose limits). They sampled salt content in various restaurant's meals and the easy "winner" if you want to call it that was a corned beef sandwich with a pickle from Katz's deli (probably NY's best). It came in at 4,490 mg's!!!
I read some of what you folks ate there and I could almost feel my blood pressure increasing. I'll still frequent Attman's but the time between visits will probably increase a bit. Keep it in mind when you chow down there folks.

Born in Brooklyn pizza

no...I remember the place and as a displaced New Yorker it was the ONLY place I'd go to for pizza.
I've since moved but I wish you luck finding another place that comes close. The area has lots of Pizza places but I can't think of any others I'd go out of my way for.

Need good food and good spot for Ravens game Saturday (Baltimore)

I second Sammy's...good food, very fairly priced and a nice atmosphere. Parking in the area is iffy but they have valet parking for a reasonable charge.

A meal a month...

A former New Yorker living in baltimore now. It's hard to argue with Per Se but someone on the thread has already made a fairly good argument.
If you're going to be in NY and want a wonderful meal without all of the expense of Per Se you ought to think about Le Bernadin. Not inexpensive by any means but it is unquestionably NY's finest seafood restaurant and you really can't go wrong there.
