Calumet's Profile

roadtrip to PIG OUT at St.Mary's in Tucson !

Thanks for the reminding me about St. Marys. They usually sell capirotada, a traditional Mexican bread pudding, during Lent. I need to get over there and buy some. Their flour tortillas are incredibly thin and delicious and worth the drive across town.

Seeking upscale (not stuffy) restaurant to take clients in Tucson, AZ

Tucson has a very good variety of upscale casual restaurants. Kingfisher, Pastiche, Poca Cosa, Jonathan's Cork, and Vivace. I'm sure that I am forgetting a couple. I would second Feast, but they are closed on Mondays.

Bison meat available in Tucson?

You might call Jonathan's Cork Restaurant in Tucson and ask them where they get their bison meat. While it is probably a commercial vendor, they may be kind enough to order some for you if you ask.

ISO Wine and Cheese in Tucson

The Rum Runner has a nice selection of cheese and wines. Plaza Liquors probably has the most knowledgeable wine staff in Tucson but they don't carry any cheese.

Cooking courses for home cooks in Tucscon

Culinary Concepts, in Plaza Palomino, has various cooking classes and Pima Community College offers a personal interest course in Southwestern cooking.

Your favorite cheap and cheerful Tucson eats?

I think Lovin' Spoonfuls is better than Govinda's and I second the recommendation for Little Poca Cosa for breakfast or lunch. The Dish recently moved and has a new smaller menu that is nice for a light dinner.

Suggestion for Sunday lunch in Tucson

The Arizona Inn patio is the perfect spot for a Sunday brunch. Their brunch menu is around $20 and is listed at arizonainn.com. Make sure and request a spot on the patio when you make reservations.

Crabby in Tucson

You are probably not going to find fresh soft shell crabs in Tucson. The only ones that I have seen available from wholesalers are frozen. You could try ordering them from the 17th street market or asking at your favorite independent restaurant if they would order some for you. But the cost of flying fresh soft shell crabs to Tucson is expensive. You would probably be better off buying the frozen crabs which any market can order for you.

Tucson: Dessert report

The tiramisu at Vivace is the best version that I have ever tasted. It is light and fluffy and has just the right balance of brandy, espresso, and chocolate flavors.
