Dining out in USVI [moved from General Topics board]

Some great VERY local places I found:
Ideal Roti
Daylight Bakery - Johny cakes and Pate
T-Restaurant
Chicken Fry (this is behind the Windward Hotel in the hood)

Stay away from Cuzzin's or Glady's Cafe. "Local" food for tourists. Locals don't eat here.

Really good fried chicken in Eatontown, NJ

I thought I'd share this with fellow Chowhounders. The fried chicken at the Grand China Buffet on Rte 36 Eastbound is really good. Crispy, well seasoned and cooked just right. This doesn't seem to be a fluke since I've had it at various times of the day and on several different days of the week. Enjoy!

LITTLE PEPPER College Point is OPEN!!

So I was there last night also...my g/f and I ordered the fried rice cakes with fish slices - the fish was done to perfection, fried potato with pickled cabbage (recommended by the waitress who spoke good English) - I had never had anything like that before and it was very good and twice cooked pork - great flavor but the cut of meat was a little fatty. I also noticed that they had Singapore chili crab on the menu. Really interested in trying that next time.

Place was clean and very pleasant. I highly recommend it!

MING YING Chinese Pan Asian Restaurant Long Branch NJ

Just wanted to give some feedback on the House Special Duck and the Volcano beef from Ming Ying. I ordered these two for take-out and for the price, the portions were a little disappointing. The beef was tasty but it wasn't anything special and they also skimped on the vegetables that came with the duck. Maybe it was a busy evening but I was disappointed especially with all the positive postings.

Ada's Latin Flavor ~ Long Branch

Had lunch there yesterday and had the Mufango and beef tripe soup. Both were very good and well seasoned. Definitely will be going back again to try more of their creations. Ada was very gracious and friendly as always. Good eats!

Roasted Suckling Pig done to PERFECTION!!!

So I did the trek up to Elizabeth today to pick up my order of Suckling Pig which I put in yesterday morning. I wasn't disappointed but I wasn't more impressed than what I had at Casa do Leitao. In fact from a customer service stand point I prefer Casa Do Leitao since Valenca was a bit of a mad house. It was super busy and there was a wait even though I put the order in a day ahead. The pig was good but I think that b'cuz they have such high volumes, quality is not quite there. Just my two cents - take it for what it's worth.

Any decent breakfast places in the Copley Square area?

Hi,

I'm here on business staying at the Fairmont Copley Square and can't seem to find a breakfast place where I can an omelet and maybe some pancakes. Any suggestions. I'm trying to stay away from the hotel restaurants if at all possible.

Thanks much.

Roasted Suckling Pig done to PERFECTION!!!

fourunder, I've had both and I have to say that at Casa Do Leitao I was not disappointed. The skin is done to perfection. Since it is a suckling pig there's just a little fat, but just the right amount. I prefer it to the Chinese crispy skin roast pork since it could be a little on the fatty side. The owner/chef, Joe is super friendly and seems like the only one that speak English there. Make sure you call ahead b'cuz the suckling pig goes quickly. People stop in and by slabs of it. So call and reserve your order. Also the restaurant is pretty small so call ahead and see if they have a table.
I also tried their desserts and found them really delicious!

Roasted Suckling Pig done to PERFECTION!!!

When I got there, those babies were ten minutes from being done... and when I got my order, it was still piping hot. I took a fork and tapped the skin... let's just say, you won't be disappointed. Planning on going back there on Friday for more. Can't wait!

Roasted Suckling Pig done to PERFECTION!!!

So excited to find and thus share this diamond in the rough.

Just drove up to Elizabeth to Casa Do Leitao (http://casadoleitao.com/casadoleitao.... and got me a true suckling pig, not a roasted whole pig faking as 'Roasted Suckling Pig' but a TRUE suckling pig! Skin is done to perfection and not fatty at all. Meat was tender and juicy. Price for whole was reasonable, about $140 and the best part is they will sell it however you want it. A half, a quarter or by the pound and you don't have to order ahead. They are closed on Mondays but they have suckling pig every day. Best to call ahead so that you'll know when the next batch is coming out of the oven.

Place was spotless too, whoever the guy was behind the counter, owner or manager... he was very friendly and polite.

Highly recommended. Area wasn't the best but the immediately block seemed fine. I did take-out but have not eaten there yet. I'll report back once I do.

If anyone ventures there please let me know what you thought.

A Little Bit of Cuba Coming Soon in Freehold, NJ!!!

Friday night, just got home from having dinner there. My girlfriend ordered the red snapper and I had the Lechon Adadas (spelling?). Firstly service was poor. Kitchen was not in sync with 'Front-of-house'. Entres took almost 35 minutes to come out and both dishes were bland at best. My pork was dry. I asked for the skin to be crispy and it came out soggy. Had to send it back. Both were pooly seasoned. Just not a great experience and it was not inexpensive. I was disappointed and won't be going back any time soon. Really too bad. It could be so much better - poor execution.

Delucacheesemonger,

Looks like it is a 'whole' pig according to others who have chimed in here - when were you there? Maybe they've changed the way they serve it.

Anyone know where they would serve the entire suckling pig instead of a quarter of a regular sized pig? I've got to believe that the meat from a suckling pig is going to be different.

For $32 per person they serve the table an entire suckling pig (baby pig). This is something that needs to be ordered in advanced. Minimum of 4 people.

Chinese baby suckling pig, Flushing Queens NY

Hey foodies, anyone know where I can get some Chinese baby suckling pig in Flushing Queens? I'm not talking about roasted pork with the crispy skin... that's pretty much gotten almost everywhere, nor am I talking about Char-siew, the reddish brown BBQ'd cross sliced pork loin. I'm talking real crispy skin, almost no meat, thin layer of fat just under the super crispy skin.

Thoughts?

Thanks.

Experience at Chef Changs House, Brookline

I think it is really unfortunately when new ownership takes over or other family members carry the baton forward that the passion is usually not there. No longer the pride to continue producing a great product.

I'm never going back, so calling Tony would not really help anyone and sometimes they are doing the best with what they have... the new cook was probably the best they could find under the circumstances.... oh well. Cross that one off the list.

Experience at Chef Changs House, Brookline

I consider myself a pretty tolerant person... if the restaurant I am dining at happens to have mediocre to poor service, I'll tolerate it because the food compensates for it. For me if the restaurant was a poor experience I just never go back, I'm not really one to complain or make a fuss with the staff/owner.

So after reading all the raves about the Peking Duck at Chef Changs I figured I'll take the trouble/make the effort to go eat there despite many other choices available in downtown Boston. So first impressions were pretty bad, the restaurant smelt weird after stepping in to the main dining room. The rugs on the floor looked dirty and was quite un-appetizing.

The duck came out from the kitchen at room temperature, skin was soggy, the fat underneath the skin was not rendered and had turned a pale white. I'm glad that everyone else that had a good experience there didn't have to eat I had.

I also ordered some stir fried vegetables and they were very plain and not very creative as to the assortment of vegetables.

Sorry to rant on but I would never go back and the duck is just plain bad!

my 2 cents on Fatty Crab in Manhattan, NY

I had lunch today at Fatty Crab. I was totally unimpressed. I ordered the green mango salad and not only was it not authentic, it was very plain and way overpriced. Then came the Malaysian fish fry. Not worth the price and it had a thick batter and the rice was way too overpowered with the belacan. I also tried the 'Jalan Alor chicken wings'. Take it from someone that has eaten at Jalan Alor in Kuala Lumpur. The chicken wings at Fatty Crab don't even come close. Talk about misrepresentation! Lastly the wonton noodle was really bad. Again, for the price not worth the visit. Lunch came to over $80 for two. I wouldn't recommend this place. Take your money elsewhere and enjoy great eats. I would never go back.
