Kinton Ramen - First Taste

Of course...silly question. I'll go anyway.

Kinton Ramen - First Taste

I want to go this weekend - have there been lineups yet?

any recent reviews of sushi couture's tasting menu?

Got it. A few more varieties of fish is a good trade for the cooked food IMO.

any recent reviews of sushi couture's tasting menu?

I had the omakase not-so-recently (a year ago) and it was good value for $39. I can't comment on the higher-price-point omakase that people were requesting at that time.

You've probably seen this particular menu progression elsewhere - we had:

Aji tempura (sandwiched between shiso leaves); ankimo (monkfish liver); baked mussel with cheese
Baked scallop in shell with cheese and lemon
Sake shooter (Sake, raw oyster, uni, quail egg, tobiko); sea bream sashimi (from Japan); butterfish sashimi (with garlic oil)
kampachi nigiri (amberjack)
Sea bream nigiri (from Greece)
B.C. tuna nigiri (with garlic oil)
hotate with uni nigiri (raw scallop and sea urchin)
dynamite maki
butter yaki maki
Sushi Couture maki
unagi tempura nigiri
green tea cheesecake (from Japan)

Am now curious about the all sushi omakase...

Bridget, the roti lady is back!

Yeah, I was there at maybe 1:10 and they were already cleaned up and getting ready to leave. Was jonesing for a shrimp and pumpkin which they were offering today. Definitely will make a mental note to go next time at 12:30.

Salted Caramels.....I want these now!!

Probably could predicted this, but these taste like Werthers chewy caramels with a bit of salt. Nothing special at all.

Salted Caramels.....I want these now!!

PC Black Label offers plain (i.e. no chocolate) fleur de sel caramels imported from France - although I haven't tried.

Kingyo Izakaya

So excited. Kingyo plus Santouka means I can put off a Vancouver trip almost indefinitely.

NEW CONSOLIDATED Thread: Best Chicken Wings in GTA

Yes to Pho Hung. Have had their spicy wings (which are very similar to buffalo wings) two weeks in a row. Will probably return for a third.

Black Forest Cake

My mom rather enjoyed the black forest cake that we ordered from Wanda's Pie In The Sky - fresh whipped cream, black cherries, moist dark chocolate cake, and not too sweet overall.

Giving Maroli some love

Sounds yummy!

Giving Maroli some love

Agreed that it is moderately priced and portions are not huge, but I would rather pay $1-2 more per dish and get dishes that don't taste like they were all made with the same mother sauce.

Having said that, I also like Little India on Queen West, which is more generous than Maroli and also a bit cheaper.

Giving Maroli some love

I love Maroli! We get delivery at least once a month. It's the only Indian food I've ever eaten that doesn't make me sick afterwards (yes, I realize this could be more my problem than theirs). We have hit upon a trio of dishes that complement each other nicely (chicken tikka masala, palak paneer and chicken kurma) along with naan and rice. Their paneer in particular is to die for - soft and pillowy - like gnocchi if it were made of fresh cheese.

Newbie to DiningDateNight ...

Splendido seems be gone from the DiningDateNight roster. There are only a few upper-range restaurants on the list now and Splendido had been the best of those IMO. Damn, should have taken advantage earlier.

dondon izakaya

Here's a very early positive review from a private New Year's party:

Apparently Daisuke Izutsu is the head chef! (previously Kaiseki Sakura)

Shopping Mall Food Court Favourites

Lamb is the only dish I get there regularly. I've had the butter chicken just once - the sauce was unremarkable and the breast meat overcooked, so haven't gone back for that. I should add that I've only ever seen the lime lamb at TD Center; the Eaton Center spot has always had the the regular curry when I've visited.

Shopping Mall Food Court Favourites

I always crave the lime lamb curry with rice at Amaya Express. Their regular lamb curry isn't bad, but the hit of lime cuts right through the richness of the stew and elevates an already decent food court dish. Besides - tender chunks of real meat for $7.49 + tax? Amazing!

Tokyo Kitchen

Hmm. I used to really like this place, and it's still not bad, but sometime within the past year or so the menu was expanded for the worse. As mentioned above, it used to focus on yoshoku, but now they offer a ton of what I consider unnecessary sushi choices (before, they only used raw fish in a couple of donburi). I also miss their interesting daily specials (kushikatsu, oden, etc). Bottom line is that I don't really go anymore, but I'd be interested in hearing some positive reviews. Their servings were never large, but the food was always tasty.

guu sakabar menu reduction

I wonder why they made this decision. The menu change brings the Sakabar's offerings closer in line with the first Toronto Guu, but wasn't one of their initial selling points the fact that Sakabar had a different menu?

Still, if you go to Sakabar on, say, a Friday or Saturday, their specials (post-menu change) will tend to include sushi, sashimi and raw oysters, aka the items I choose to build my meal around.

La Societe Bistro

No, they don't jibe, do they? While I don't think it's collusion, there may be some kind of rule whereby the reviewer feels free to tell the unpleasant truth in the text as long as they award enough stars for the establishment to claim a good rating. It's definitely misleading, and ultimately, you gotta do your homework.

La Societe Bistro

The review strikes me as having the same spirit as someone making a harsh comment, then adding a smiley face at the end.

e.g. The fries are good, but otherwise, La Societe sucks :)

Crepe's a go go - New Location!

That would be the now former Bubble Tease, between Miles Nadal JCC and Greg's Ice Cream.

Sushi Couture Vs. Zen Omakase

Wow - you do go a lot, then!

That's a great way to ensure a fabulous meal. Thanks for the info.

Sushi Couture Vs. Zen Omakase

jlunar, do your April and May 2011 sets consist of a la carte selections, or do they represent omakase meals?

fanny chadwick's on dupont is SOLID

I really like this place. We've had brunch twice so far and have found that they pay attention to the little details that bespeak of excellence.

We like their homemade Canadian bacon, more like a delicious ham with a citrusy spicy crust. Their salad dressings are light and well-balanced.

The buckwheat pancakes were nicely spread out and tender. Their french toast was like a creamy cloud of bread pudding. Even the maple syrup had a 'medium' intensity.

The space is cozy, light-filled and inviting. Prices are higher than the neighbourhood standard (average $12 brunch main) but it's worth it.

Guu on Bloor update.

Guu on Bloor update.

An update from PostCity magazine:

http://www.postcity.com/Eat-Shop-Do/Eat/March-2011/Hold-tight-Guu-Sakabar-still-awaits-liquor-license/

Money quote: "When asked whether Guu SakaBar would open before the end of the month, Kim was unclear, saying "it all depends on the license and the AGCO.""

Where to get frozen pearl onions?

OK - thanks!

Guu - Second location opening in the Annex!!

I was moved to call the first location today, and the person on the phone assured me that the second location was opening in March and not in February. "Of that I am sure," he said.
Not soon enough, I say!
