Pioneer Square/Qwest

FYI.... It's actually about a mile (1.1). 20-30min walk. Even the southern most part of Safeco is only 1.5mi to the market.

86 Spring Hill, Welcome Ma'ono Chicken & Whisky

Agreed. Never understood the hype behind Spring Hill. Even forgetting about price. Been twice and was unimpressed both times. Felt like people were settling since there isn't that much in the way of that type of dining in the area. Just my feeling. I didn't even think the chicken was all that either. Ours was overcooked to nearly burnt.

Best Burger in Seatown?

Checked out 8oz yesterday and IMO it needs to be included in the best of Seattle discussion. Great balance even with so many toppings on the Broadway and GrassFed version. Tasty bun that held up to the medium rare juiciness and perfectly cooked meat. Fries were good too. We were excited about the opening of this branch since 8oz was our favorite when we loved in LA (better than Umami in our opinion.. and Umami is very good!). That said, we tempered our expectations knowing sometimes when places open new branches (franchised) some things get lost in translation. I would honestly say this place exceeded our expectations and we will be back for sure. Pricey? Sure, but we knew that coming in. The lunch special @ $12 for the Broadway burger, fries and soda seemed just fine to us. Good beer selection too!

Bun Bo Hue?

Confirmed. I went for lunch today. The #31 Bun Bo Hue Special comes with both cinnamon pate and pork blood. Yum!

Bun Bo Hue?

Completely agree. Pho so 1 has the best version I have tried in Seattle. I haven't been to Hoang Lan, but have tried several others. The depth of the broth at Pho So 1 is untouchable compared to others. I also love the options of the cuts to add (or subtract) from your order. My current favorite pho restaurant as well.

Edit: Just noticed the comment about blood/pate. I'm 99% sure that's not the case. The cinnamon pate and pork blood are two seperate options on the menu. The pate is delicious btw...

HELP! Portland for 30 on a Saturday...!

Ended up at Firehouse. The room upstairs worked great and the food was solid.

Dot's Deli, Fremont

We were underwhelmed as well. We really wanted to like this place, but thought it was average at best. We tried two pates and the liverwurst. All fairly boring. No real flavors coming through. Not sure where the roquefort was in the roquefort pate. The marguez was pretty good, but not something I would need to go to Fremont to get. The BLT was a BLT and the coleslaw was coleslaw. Nothing special. Fries were ok, but too salty. I like what they are doing... they just aren't doing it well enough for us to go back and spend money there. Maybe we will check back in next year...

HELP! Portland for 30 on a Saturday...!

I know this is a crazy ask, but if you can help me find a rec for a Portland restaurant for a Saturday night dinner that can accommodate about 30 people I would GREATLY appreciate it!

This is a last minute request due to previous rehearsal dinner plans for a wedding falling through.

I'm not very familiar with the PDX restaurant so please excuse the wide open question. Price doesn't really matter nor does location... just somewhere in the Portland area.

THANKS!!!

Taiwanese restaurants near Bellevue, Washington

They didn't move... they added another down the street. The old one is still there.

LA Hound Coming on Short Notice -- Help!

In my opinion, Top Pot is the most over-rated eating establishment in Seattle. I paid $4.50 for a chocolate raised with coconut and a pumpkin old fashioned this past weekend. Both mediocre at best. I've tried others and none have impressed. Mighty O is much better IMO. Stan's in Westwod destroys Top Pot.

Now there is another Henry's Tawain (Plus) about half a block east of the original Henry's in the ID. Similar menu, but with a few higher end items. Haven't been yet. Hoping this doesn't mean the old location will close down.

Favorite pork chop in Seattle?

Nearly everything I've had at Local 360 has been disappointing, except for the pork chop. I loved it. I really want to like this place since it's close to me, but every meal has been a let down. Especially the breakfast/brunch items. Yes, I realize I am in the minority here. I've tried it 4 times now.

All You Can Eat Pizza

Round Table for lunch

Hatch Green Chili Roasting event at Albertson's in Burien, today-Sunday or while they last...

Westlake Whole Foods has them (un-roasted, of course). I think they were $1.99/lb.

Mediocrity in Seattle?

If you omit high end dining I would say, in general, food is (much?) less expensive in Los Angeles than it is in Seattle.

Real Mexican food in Seattle or the East side?

"I don't know if you can order in these taco trucks speaking English, I was never offered the option of English, and that's OK"

Dude... seriously? Have you even tried? I have never come across a taco truck that English was a problem.

Fav Rare/Obscure Beers On Tap--Where To Find?

Already mentioned, Bambinos has a surprisignly strong rotation of beer on tap. And at $2 per glass during happy hour the value is there too (you need to purchase some food to get that price on beer, but their pizza is solid).

Super Deli Mart in West Seattle / White Center is INCREDIBLE. It's a mini-mart with an incredible focus on beer. They have 5 (I believe) taps and offer some amazing selections you won't find anywhere else. I currently have growlers of Great Divide Brewing Rumble Oaked Aged Imperial IPA and Dortmunder Actien-Brauerei in my fridge. Their turnover is very quick so nothing stays on too long. Follow them on Twitter to find out what's on tap. I've purchased Dogfish Head, Bear Republic, Victory, Two Beers, Firestone, Maui Brewing, etc from there. Their bottle selection is amazing too.

And they've tried to recreate the old Hoagie's Corner Cheesy British (not quite as I remember, but nice try!)

I cannot recommend this place enough.

Affordable, good SUSHI in greater Seattle (<$25/person)

I'm a huge fan of Shiro's, but I can't imagine getting out of there for less than $25.

Pop-up restaurants

Another view of Shophouse - Overpriced, Under-seasoned and Disappointing. After doing some research, we were very excited to try them and had hoped it would approach some of the Thai food we had while living in LA. We were disappointed in finding a great idea gone wrong with bland, under-seasoned food and prices that didn't fit in with the portions. We would have been fine with the portion had the food been decent. It wasn't.

We could have gone on an off night I suppose... who knows.

We REALLY wanted to like this place/concept.

XLB at Chen's and Long's - Called ? on the menu?

Hi - Can someone please tell me what the XLB is called on the menu of both of these places. I found the menu on urbanspoon for both and don't see Xiao Long Bao or Soup Dumplings on either. I know they are there... I just must be missing them.

Thanks for the help!

Spur - Happy Hour - Belltown - Lame

Wow! Did you even read what I wrote? I guess I was being too nice. Horribly overpriced and no flavor. Just my opinion... check it out for yourself. We wanted to like it.... but won't be back. The dishes they are attempting are pretty basic stuff and, from my perspective, were mostly failures.

Anyhow... like I said... on to the next HH!

Spur - Happy Hour - Belltown - Lame

Some quick thoughts -

Very good cocktails. Choice of three at $7ea.
$3 Georgetown beer. Good.

We ordered all of the HH food items:

1) Smoked Frites with Aioli. The aioli was great and most of the fries were too. Would get again, but at $4? Over-priced.

2) Salmon Tartar - Flavorless. I'm all for simplicity, but this had nothing going for it. Tasted just the parsley for the most part. $4. Decent portion.

3) Pork Rillettes w/ Mustard and Red Onion Jam - Best of the bunch. Still lacking seasoning though. Common theme throughout. Came together when all flavors mixed together. $6

4) Tongue Slider. Absolutely ridiculous they charge $6 for this. Lame pot roast on a bun for $6. No thanks. Again, lacking seasoning. There were pickled onions on it, but we didn't taste them.

5) Complimentary Fried Hominy. Personally, this doesn't work for me. Felt like my teeth were going to fall out while eating them.

Would we go back? Nope. If we had to I would just get a cocktail or a beer. Too many better options out there. Spent over $40 with tax/tip and went home to make dinner.

On to the next HH!

Pizza for Very Discerning Visitors

We are huge fans of Bambino's too. One of, if not, our favorite pizzas in Seattle.

Very good lamb burger at Athina Grill - Lower Queen Anne

Just popped in for a quick bite last night and had the lamb burger special ($6 w/ fries).

Nothing to say about the fries, but the lamb burger was delicious. One of the best I have ever had. Most times when I have ordered this in the past it's a better idea than what is executed. They usually come out hard as a rock from overcooking. Not this one. It was cooked perfectly. Medium rare and fell apart in your mouth with a very nice "lambi-ness" flavor.

Solid.

Not a destination place, but if you're craving a lamb burger and are in the area I would recommend it.

The wife ordered the mousaka, which was fine, but the side dish of peas and the rice topped with some veggies were way too salty.

The staff was very nice as well.

Where's great food in Tacoma area?

I would say East-West if actually Vietnamese/Thai/Korean/Chinese/French/etc (depending on what they put on as a special)... they aren't that focused. Overpriced and average at best.

Staple & Fancy

Wow. Can't disagree with landguy more.

Grew up in Seattle and lived in LA for the past 5 years. Moved back recently.

Went to Staple & Fancy last night. Party of 6 total. I can honestly say it was the best meal from start to finish we have ever had in Seattle. Not a single miss. Not everything was outstanding, but nothing was bad. It's no Hatfield's or Mozza, but man... it was fantastic! And a bargain.

Here's what we had - (from memory... could be off on a few things)

1st Course
Fried Scallops w/ remoulade
Pork pate crostini w/ aged balsamic
Smoked albacore crostini
Heirloom Tomato and crouton salad w/ goat cheese and watercress
Grilled Guajillo peppers w/ shaved bonito
Grilled octopus w/ white beans and paprika
Geoduck crudo w/ shaved fennel and grapefruit

Palate Cleanser
Tomato soup with basil oil in an espresso cup

2nd Course
Gnocchi w/ chicken thighs and matsutake mushrooms in a white wine sauce
Ravioli stuffed w/ chantrelles and speck in a browned butter sauce
Tagliatelle (?) w/ mussels in a white wine sauce

3rd Course
Grilled NY Strip steak w/ grilled onions and fingerling potatoes
Seared Ahi w/ olives, tomatoes and artichokes
Swordfish w/ corn, grilled green onion and pancetta

4th Course
Ricotta cheesecake w/ blackberries
Chocolate Brownie w/ caramel sauce and walnut gelato
Green rhubarb sorbet w/ almond cookie

Best Banh Beo?

I've always wondered what all of those little dishes were when I was at Vietnamese restaurants and now (i think) I know.

Any recs on where to go for this in Seattle?

Looking for a great place for Easter Brunch this year - buffet preferred

No Recs?

Going to Din Tai Fung tomorrow, what should I order?

40 Juicy Pork Soup Dumplings!

Did it yesterday. 5 people. Always good, IMO.
