Really good lunch around Eatontown

Thank you all for your replies. We went Kanji and it had very good, fresh fish. The service was excellent.
I highly recommend it.

Really good lunch around Eatontown

I need to be in Eatontown on a Saturday.
Can anyone recommend a place there or north of there for an excellent meal. Light food is better. Japanese/Chinese/Thai is ideal.

Going to Salisbury MD next week

Can anyone recommend several good restaurants in or around Salisbury. Fifteen mile radius if fine. Local specialties preferred.
Is there a good fish store where I can bring home some crab meat?
Thanks from Manhattan.

Suggestions for dinner pre-opera

Lincoln.

East End Kitchen New UES Restaurant

I have now eaten at this bar and restaurant twice and it deserves more foot traffic than it is getting.
It is in the former space of Boeuf a la Mode. The chef cooked for Atelier Robuchon.
It is a nice size, well lit place with a welcoming bar. The theme of the restaurant is American food that is locally sourced.
My companions and I thought that dinner was delicious and extremely well executed both times that I ate there.

The first time, I had the vegetable terrine which was fresh and well composed. My pork with peaches was also very nice. The pork was obviously from a small farm as it was very "porky" and not at all dried out. My friends had the watermelon and feta salad which they loved and flounder with couscous and steak.
The second time I had the duck breast with lovely little dumplings in a wine reduction. The breast was rare and very tasty.
Deserts are delicious. I had a chocolate mousse with a fruit coulis and my partner had an outstanding sabayon with plums.
The bread is homemade. The butter is locally sourced. The drinks are well made and the wine list is very interesting. Prices are fair. Portions are on the smallish side.

The service is attentive and welcoming. The bar has a different, more informal menu and it looks like a nice place to hang out.

What I do not understand is why YELP only posts a selected number of reviews which are just terrible. If you look at the non-posted reviews that you have to go through hoops to get, they are excellent. Why would a website be so cruelly selective to a newcomer?

In any case, East End Kitchen is a welcome addition to the UES. Jut a little bit off the beaten track.

Visiting Upper East Side - restaurant suggestion? Sushi?

This place is just another Korean run "sushi" bar. Their fish is boring and not fresh. The selection is awful and over priced. Stay away and cook at home!

Upscale Birthday Celebration

A New Yorker friend of mine will be in Seattle during her 60th birthday. She is quite sophisticated and knows food and wine.

Can you suggest a place that preferably but not necessarily has seafood, has a good vibe and is upscale and delicious? Money is no object.
I looked at the boards and "Spinasseā€ seems to be recommended but my friends are very used to eating Italian.
How is Canlis? Can anyone recommend any other places for a party of four that takes reservations?
Thanks!

Japanese on UES

I disagree about Gayjyumaru. When it first opened it was very good. Now it has a major attitude and the fish is just okay. Not worth it to me. Plus it is a very uncomfortable space.
I need to try Inase.
At Tokubei, the specials are very good and the lack of any attitude or pretense is even better.

Japanese on UES

I have started going back to Tokubei for diner.
This restaurant has been around since the mid 1970's when the only sushi restaurants in NY were Robata and Nippon.
It fell out of favor with the advent of all the new high end sushi bars.
We were there again last night. It's a really homey place with a salt of the earth, Japanese bar tender. No masters of the universe and no one from the burbs. The crowd is strictly Yorkville and very down home. The neighborhood characters hang out at the bar. The tables are covered in tacky oil cloth and the menus have cigarette burns from bygone years. The owner tends the sushi bar.
The sushi and sashimi was very good. We had Monkfish liver, a very good bonito tataki and superb toro. I loved my oshitashi.
My sashimi was very fresh. The chef used real assortments of seaweed, not the shredded radish that one gets at Korean owned "Japanese" sushi bars which have now populated the UES.
No, this is not Yasuda. My sea urchin was not from Santa Barbara and the salmon was a bit bland. Sake selections are very limited. But it was a quiet haven with a neighborhood feel without the wait and the attitude.
Make sure to ask for the specials of the night and you will get a very good dinner.

Best Thai in Manhattan

I have German relatives coming to Manhattan. They love Thai food.
I have never been to Sripraphai, which seems to be the temple of Thai in NYC.
Is there a Thai restaurant in Manhattan that is comparable and that takes reservations?
Thanks.

Great Opening Fish Tag

Sifton reviewed Fish Tag today. I thought that the review was so mean spirited and undeserved. This is a lovely restaurant and has delicious food. I just don't get it. I wonder if his palate has gone south to an unmentionable place.
I ate at Ai Fiore on Sunday. Not a truffle in sight. Food and service just okay. Wine list stratospheric.

Review of Corton

I am so glad that you had the same opinion that I did. This is an excellent restaurant and so worth going to.
It was not full the night that I went which made me apprehensive.
Was the restaurant full when you were there?

Review of Corton

Enjoy it, Ellenost. Don't get me wrong, I am a huge fan of Danny Meyer and I adore The Bar Room at The Modern and Gramercy Tavern but Corton is really interesting and eating your dinner makes you think about what is going on in your mouth. The intelligence of the cooking is also very fine.
I guess that I need to go to Chicago and eat at Alinea.
Looking forward to your review.

Review of Corton

I just went for the first time. The amuses were amazing and kept on coming. The bread service was excellent. We had the prix fixe and added a course each. The pacing of the meal was perfect.
My seafood appetizer was very special, multiple small plates of yumminess.
The Mangalista pork was outstanding. The duck was presented two ways. First a little pie of leg confit and then the breast. The presentation was just beautiful. I am not a great fan of Lola duck. I prefer Moulard.
The desert was outstanding. A dark chocolate ganache log and the S/O had a French toast and fruit contraption.
The service was not intrusive and very professional. The wines and the sommelier were great.
The price was hefty, but we ate and drank a lot.
I would go back anytime. I thought that it was just as good if not better than EMP and certainly better that The Modern.
I loved the innovative food and platings. The plates themselves were gorgeous too.

Has anyone tried Pan Asian on E86 yet?

That's what what I thought when I saw the menu. Boy was I mistaken. Not even close to Saigon Grill. Such a shame.
There is a place named "Spice Noodle" on the UES that is almost identical to Saigon Grill. They say that they have the old chef.
The woman taking orders barely speaks english and is kind of rude but the take out is pretty good.

Great Opening Fish Tag

Go Early, Eat Well. Less Noise.
Four of us went. Excellent wine list. Great Waiter. Fabulous meal. Octopus, Prawn Bruschetta, Tuna confit bruschetta, Sheep milk dumplings with sea urchin, grilled swordfish. All excellent and exciting. Ice cream and sorbets were outstanding.

Carnegie Hill Indian

Ordered out from Maharaja Palace. Just delicious. The spicing was not at all bland the chicken tandoori was not dried out. The flavors were excellent. Much better and more authentic than Tamarind.
A real asset to the neighborhood.

Has anyone tried Pan Asian on E86 yet?

Awful. Went there for lunch yesterday.
As MMRuth said the Chia Gio were just edible but no lettuce or mint to wrap. I had a seafood soup. Tasted like water with some coconut milk. I ate some tasteless shrimp and left the rest.
This is really a shame. They can't last long.

Great Sichuan Meal at Wa Jeal

We order out from Wa Jeal a lot. I think that they have the finest Chinese food on the UES. Yes, their Sichuan fare is better than the non-Sichuan, but even then, it's better than the other options in this area.

Any UES Thai restaurants as good as Saigon Grill?

Spice Noodle on 1st in the '90's has the chef from Saigon Grill. Their take out is pretty good.

Blk Squid Ink Pasta

Rafetto's has excellent fresh squid ink linguini. Borgatti's on Arthur Ave. has very good dried linguini. A & V used to have very good dried squid ink spaghetti but they stopped carrying it. Their house made is tasteless.

Salisbury Wicomico Civic Center

Two New Yorkers will be going to the Wicomico Civic Center for the National
Poodle show this week. Any ideas for a decent lunch? Not too heavy but good eating.
Thanks.

Help Me Love 97th & Lex

I was so excited when a new Indian place opened up in the old sushi restaurant on 95th and Madison. It was North Indian to boot. Name is Maharaja Palace. I passed by a couple of times and the owner said that they have the best food in NYC. Sadly, not so. Not even close.
We took out from there last nignt. I had to repeat my order and address over and over.
The food arrived cold. The quality was not good. The portions were small and it was very expensive, even for Indian. They managed to kill one of my favorite appetizers, Pani Poori. It ended up being a sodden, astringent mess. I threw it out. The Saag Paneer had all of three pieces of paneer. The bread tasted of Bisquick. We could not tell the onion kulcha apart from the aloo parata. One had no onions and the other no potatoes.
There were no condiments in the bag either. A real disappointment.
I guess it's back to Tamarind.

Time Warner Center - Where to Lunch?

I had a fabulous lunch at Landmarc. Excellent food and service. I really nice view too boot.

Del Posto. Ouch!

I ate at Del Posto for the first time recently. We were a party of ten.
I will not go back even if I do not have to pay.
The first impression is of a glitzy, cold, marble mausoleum with hookers at the bar, a ton of tourists and expense account types.
The second was the dourness of the wait and service staff. No joy at all. It was as if Joe Bastianich was standing in the kitchen with a cat o'nine tails, ready to strike. These guys were scared. Where is Danny Meyer when you need him.
Then the food. The amuse were so salty that I took a bite/sip and left it. My app of clams and artichokes had zero flavor of clams. The pupkin ravioli was nice and flavorsome, but we just got two. Pasta Bolognese was a total bore and again, a tiny portion. Where's the beef, man? This dish should zing!
Main of a veal chop for two was a great piece of meat, but so salty...and the veggies of cavolo nero and er mushrooms? Same as the clams. Zero flavor. How do you kill kale and mushrooms.
Desert was tartuffo. Nice. That's it. Wine pairing was very good.
Dinner took forever, 3.5 hours for five courses. Half an hour wait between main course and desert. Coffee was served before desert. Where in Italy is that done?

To sum up: This was a joyless, plodding experience without a standout dish in the whole line up.
For me it's back to Convivio or Locanda Verde.

Dinner at Beacon Restaurant tonight, what to order?

I can tell you what NOT to order. Six of us had a really so-so meal there. Too bad. The place has gone down hill and was empty when we left a 9pm,
