Is Athens covered in the Atlanta board? 1 dinner, 2 lunch (BBQ and/or Mexican)
Dax in his 4/5 post has it right. Athens is not the best place for BBQ but BUTT HUTT and Harry's are OK as is Fresh Air. Look to the southeastern board for BBQ in south Georgia, Augusta and Atlanta. The spot on top of the Georgia Theater is really a great idea for a BBQ Sandwich and a sky eye view of downtown. For a quick crayfish or shrimp taco Fuzzy's is really good (New parking deck next to the Theater.)
Sr.Sol took over the a place on the Atlanta highway and they are muy auténtico. I also like Auga Linda.
5 & 10 is the best spot in Athens hands down. Their early bird dinner is a great meal for a very modest price
Recent Athens, GA eats
One nice thing at La Fiesta is the sambroso (sp?) which is the Mexican style guacamole. The regular guac is a mushy sauce but this is fresh and tasty with a bunch of sliced jalapenos on the side if you want it hotter. The spinach and cheese burrito is also nice. Otherwise just good regular tex/mex fare
Current best grub in Athens?
I hope you are feeling better and look forward to seeing you back in the kitchen.
Have you tried Cymbalta (or Savella) plus Lyrica for fibromyalgia?. Ask your own Doctor or else see me at my office on Prince Ave.
Athens, GA - anything new and exciting?
Chef Lamar has a new menu The old one was fine and the specials were outstanding. I especially liked the calamari appetizer and the trout Haven't tried the new menu yet. East West is OK with the new chef. 5 & 10 is still the best.
For something different try Just Pho on Baxter for pho (duh) and also for Bahn Mi.
Current best grub in Athens?
Five and Ten is the best.
Chef Lemar's Iron Grill (in the old Harry Bisset's space on Mitchel Bridge Road) is brand new and a close second.m (Wide ranging menu and inventive preperations)
I havn't tried East/West since Chef Lemar has left.
LaDolce Vita is excellentn and A Tavola is close behind
I love Square One especially for Sesame Grilled Tuna
Many people love The National but I am not one of them.
Last Resort is very uneven and only fair at best.
Porterhouse grills a good steak and has great she crab soup.
The Grill and Shanes Ribs are not close to fine dining.
Mirko has decent pasta but is very casual.
Shokatini has the best sushi in town.
That's enough to keep you well fed for a while
Asian near Gwinnett Arena?
We ended up at Honey Pig Korean BBQ which was quite good.
Thanks for the suggestions
Asian near Gwinnett Arena?
Can anyone recommend a good interesting Asian Restaurant near the Arena in Gwinnett or Discover Mills. I can drive a few miles if necessary. Thanks
Sunday dinner in ATL

Athens, GA - updates, anybody?
Thai Spoon is the only place in town that serves Mee Krob which was the first Thai food I loved 25 years ago and missed here in Athens. Rhat being said the Spoon's version is a littly heavy on the sauce and too sweet and not spicy enough but it isn't bad. Over all Id agree that it is good not great. Siri Thai has better prettier food; clearer more vibrant tastes and textures but could use more variety especially compared to some of the better Thai places in Atlanta. Still very good if not great.

Help, Athens, GA, Hounds!
Next time try The Grit for breakfast . No meat but some good eating. Or you can do what i do which is go to the Bread Basket on the corner of Chase Street and Boulevard and have a real southern biscuit perhaps with chicken or tenderloin and egg or my favorite, bacon egg and cheese. They used to have a sign out front "Jesus Saves - Best Biscuits in Town". The sign is gone but they still have outstanding biscuits.. Also new in Athens is Square One for some interesting fish dishes. Near the Classic Center.
or A Tavola or La Dolce Vita for authentic Italian meals
Best Eats in Athens GA
The seafood choices at La Estrella are very good and not the usual Mex fare. I haven't had a bad meal there yet.
Sabor Latino is gone and is missed

Avoid China Wok in Athens
I started this thread so I might as well give an update. I have never gone back there for dinner but I hit it once a month or so for garlic shrimp for lunch and that one dish has been just fine every time. I wish there was a better place in that corner of town. (we do have wondrous Mexican and Latin choices and Shiri Thai but only China Wok close to my office.) I guess I should try the Tso Chicken and Mongolian beef again. I also realize that with places like that the cook often changes and I may have hit a bad substitute back in 2007.
Authentic Italian in Athens, Georgia
Mirko is good (I've only went to Watkinsville) but La Dolce Vita is a different experience. Sit down, have a glass of wine, read the menu, smooze with the wait staff the whole nice restaurant vibe instead of order at the counter, find a table and wait with a flag on your table fro them to find you. Just not the same thing.
Also I think the food quality at LDV is better. The pink sauced penne with sausage is alla buttera
http://www.grouprecipes.com/sr/24852/rigatoni-alla-buttera/recipe/
and I think it was done better at Bischero (which I lament) but it is done well at LDV
I love the beef carpaccio and the lasagne at LDV and the service has been excellent each time Ive been there. Over all the best Italian restaurant in Athens
best food in Athens, GA can be healthy
I usually take my 85 year old mother in law to the Hilltop Grill. Their Gumbo is spicy but nothing else is and it's decent food nicely prepared. I'ts no 5 & 10 but for her and her siblings who drive in from Alabama to visit, it is what makes them happy. For not spicy more upscale I like the Basil Press and even Porterhouse for steaks and their she crab soup.
Bham area - Let's talk barbecue
I like the Slick Lizard Smoke house in Jasper, AL just west of BHam. Nice smoky pork ad ribs OK sauce and real atmosphere. Also the best name...
Pizza in Athens, GA
I like gooey sloppy pizza but I fully agree with criser. If you don't want gooey and sloppy, get light sauce, well done and limit toppings. On the other hand....
BBQ in Atlanta
So I walk into Daddy Dz just before Christmas at 6 PM and ask "How are your ribs?" (My wife works at the Capitol so she goes there all the time but I just drove in from Athens) The Atmosphere is great, clippings and picures cover the walls, folks are friendly and the smell is terrific.
So the manager just says "You have to try one." and lays down a whole rib dripping in sweet and tangy sauce on a sheet of wax paper in front of me on the house. Great ribs! Tender, greasy, smoky and meaty. After the first, I ordered a plate of 4 more with sides and a sweet tea (of course). My wife had the pulled pork which was also good. Great moist cornbread, good slaw and fine BBQ beans. A totally satisfying BBQ experience.
Lawrenceville, GA (or nearby) suggestions?
In downtown Lawrenceville, Dominick's at 197 W Crogan St. serves simple Italian food in HUGE portions. and really great taste. Good balanced red sauces and gigantic menu. The half portions are more than I can eat in a sitting, the full portions serve 3 or 4 people. Very friendly atmosphere.and decent prices for the quality and quality of their food
Next door the Lil' River Grill has steaks and seafood (try their lobster ravioli) well made and a few more imaginative offerings. Prices are a bit high but the service and taste are excellent.
Thai of Athens
I believe the moved to Japan so you are out of luck.
I kind of like Cozy Yum Yum for homey Thai cooking in Athens now
Pizza in Athens, GA
The owners of Little Italy on Lumpkin have a place Peppino's at the very end of Milledge at Whitehall Road south of the Botanical Gardens which serves Pizza the way I remember it from growing up in New York City. To me it's worth the drive to get the real thing. Forget the salad bar please. It brighter cleaner and not as noisy as Little Italy and you can park out front. In my opinion, the best pizza in the area. I do not think they deliver. The Little Italy pies are the same but Little Italy always seems dark and dirty to me.
Pizza in Athens, GA
How sad. When I spoke to them a few weeks ago they seemed that they were going to focus more on grilled food than on Pizza. Seems like with good reason. Haven't tried them since the last name change.
I did go to Transmetropolitan last week in their new digs near the Carson Center on Olgelthrope. Clean but somewhat sterile atmosphere, willing service, decent crust and OK toppings but their red sauce was a bit too spicy for my taste. I still like Papino's at the end of Milledge the best.
Highlands/Dillard
I am going to a retreat halfway between Dillard, Ga and Highlands, NC. We get out Sunday around noon. anyone suggest a good spot for lunch in that area or on 441?
Thanks
athens (GA) dinner spot
The National is another good choice in Athens. I had lunch there twice this week. My friends and I had a special hanger steak sandwich with Gorgonzola, their great turkey burger with cheddar, meaty chicken salad, an interesting vegetarian sandwich and a fine ham and cheese. Dinner features many great small plates (tapas) and some good entrees. Hugh's touch (from 5&10) is evident but the menu is very different.
Worth a try.
Cheesesteak at the Phili Airport?
Yes Phili didn't look right Philly looks better.
He only has about 70 minutes (if the first flight is on time) and he says he'd rather have a mediocre cheesesteak than none (he's a kid )and he says the last time he went through PHL he couldn't find one so I figured someone here would know.
Cheesesteak at the Phili Airport?
My step son is making a connection from Denver to Shannon at the Philadelphia Airport and wants to eat a cheese steak while he is there.
Does anyone know if there is a spot inside the airport that he can satisfy this craving?
Thanks
Cheap Eats Atlanta, Milledgeville & in between
Near Emory try Dusty's Barbecue on Briarcliff road. Not the greatest stew but a fine pulled pork sandwich
