Lazy Man's Lobster / Lobster Saute / Lobster Casserole
I know this is irrelevant, but I used to love the lobster pie at the Hilltop - but the last time I was there, they quoted me $39.95 for it - and that was like 1999!
Hot and Sour Soup
Great long list by StriperGuy - I guess just to clarify (not that anyone cares) but I lived in Brookline for 6 years (and now in W. Roxbury) and I always thought it was amazing how awful some of the chinese places were in Brookline despite being so close to Boston.
My family used to dine and take out from Shanghai Village in Arlington Ctr which has completely gone downhill.
About 10 years ago Best of Boston told me to go Chau Chau city which was the "best" chinese food in boston and I have not been back to a chinatown restaurant since.
Clearly I should take StriperGuy up his ample list of suggestions.
Again, thanks for the responses.
Hot and Sour Soup
Thanks for all the suggestions ... I figured people would weigh in on this one. Maybe we'll do an "Egg Drop Soup" topic some day.
Hot and Sour Soup
For years, my family has lamented to general decline in quality of chinese food and the corallary rise in other types of Asian food - like Thai, Japanese and Vietnamese.
One thing I have found indicative is the Hot and Sour soup. To me it seems a decent bowl is rarely really hot nor sour.
I guess I was wondering if anyone agrees with me, and moreover, might have a recommendation for a place that serves very good H/S soup.
Thanks!
High Quality Nuts
Thank you to everyone who has responded - great thoughts. Interesting ... this epicenter of quality nuts in that little corner of watertown!!
High Quality Nuts
I am looking for a bag of nuts .... specifically looking to get some excellent quality pecans and also pistachio's for the holidays. Are there any suggestions where to purchase the best quality nuts in the Boston area?
Used to love Dairy Fresh Candies and was thinking something along the same lines.
Sweet Munchee Cheese?
Sweet Munchee Cheese ... this is apparently a popular processed cheese widely available in many NY deli's .... I have had it in NY as well as Florida. It is sometimes referred to as "Sweet Muenster" yet is processed unlike real muenster cheese. It also appears to be unavailable in the Boston area.
A checked with Rubin's, Michael's and Barry's. Can anyone suggest some other deli's I might consult?
ECG's Hell Night Suggestions/Warnings?
I agree with the approach to try a few of the apps while still getting an entree or two and would agree that the appetizers can really pack more of a punch. My personal experience with hot foods (which I love) is that if I eat some really hot stuff first, it sticks with me so everything else I eat after that seems extremely (sometimes way too) spicy.
Which brings me to the pasta from hell.... I have had it a couple times simply because I really like the taste and the fact that is combines some type of bolognese gravy with the habanero flavor. But it's so darn hot, it can crowd out the enjoyment of the rest of the meal.
So, one suggestion would be, get the pasta for the table but order it with the entrees.
Damn I wish I was going to Hell Night now.
Bad experience at Grendel's Den
I am apparently replying to a thread that was started back in 2005 and resurrected by ILOVEGRENDALSDEN at 11:40 on Feb 14, 2009 (Valentines Day) with a pretty unusual endorsement of Grenals Den.
Anyway, I take exception to Someguy's comment about Border Cafe - their food is seriously above average, at worse. crowded - but consistently good. In all three of their locations.
My compliments on this thread - excellent postings throughout - note: Kevin's Yogi Berra quote.
This thread was started in 2005!!!
Colonnade Rooftop Bar?
This place gets an endless amount of hype and the last time my wife checked, it cost ~$45 to hang out at the pool for an afternoon.
I've heard good things about the food and the bar - my question is, can you show up there and get a drink without having to pay some entry fee?
Boston Bars with Belgian Beers
Publick House - hands down. They have all that Belgian stuff - and Belgian food and a whole extension to their dining room called the "Monk's Cellar" - the place is practically too Belgian.
How Busy Is Cafe D on a Saturday Night?
i've eaten there on several Friday nights and it has been generally crowded - but not packed - out of 4-5 times on a Friday, we've had to wait but once, for 30 minutes.
the fish tacos are great. there is a moroccan lamb dish that it well regarded and has been on the menu for years (since before it was Cafe D - I forget the name of the previous place). good beer and wine selection. consistently spotty service.
Reasonable fondue in/around Boston??
had the fondue at No. 9 in the bar - it was great... bread and a bunch of grilled lamb. I'm pretty sure I dipped whatever I could find into the fondue. it was gorgonzola city!
Take-out wings for the Pat's game?
I'm surprised Wing Works in Davis Square/Winter Hill is not mentioned. It's probably the same distance from Chucktown as S&S, Buffs or Wing It.
These are consistently crispy and very large buffalo wings, with all the requisite flavors one could ask for besides buffalo mild, medium, hot, suicide. Highly recommended for WINGS, I am less sold on the tenders.
Local beer
go for the Cambridge Brewing Co - available at their spot or some of the better beer bars around town - it is considered a higher quality craft brew than some of the other local breweries, I would agree.
Best Onion Rings in Boston area?
does anyone know where you can get good thick cut Onion Rings - where they are server as a large veritical stack, preferably propped up by some type of pole?
Lunch between Longwood and Brighton?
not to get you off the falafel kick - but if you decide you want a sandwich there is Michaels (NY style) deli and Bottega Fiorentina (Italian deli) right in coolidge corner. both offer takeaway. both very good.
3 Good Things About Chipotle
far be it for me to poke fun of Wellington Circle ... that comment was uncalled for ... and that is a good point about that area being a breeding ground for up and coming chains (I recall having a 2 hour wait for the Texas Roadhouse which is right around the corner). hopefully Chipotle will do better than Krispy Krap.
Best Affordable Restaurants in Central Square?
I understand Green Street had more of a caribean/island food focus before it was re-done last year. I;d still consider the food to be more caribbean than anything else... preponderance of yucca, plantains, spices. (I know I am off subject)
Best Affordable Restaurants in Central Square?
I am not sure you'd call Central Kitchen "affordable" ... it's near impossible to get out of there for less than $20 a head. other places of note:
Green Street Grill: tough to do for less than $20, but's worth a try. I guess you'd call this Caribeen food.
Miracle of Science: grear bar food, as discussed. good cheeseburger; quite affordable.
Tavern on the Square: if you dont want any of the asian ethnic stuff mentioned so far, and Miracle of Science is too crowded.
HiFi Pizza
Toscanini's (ice cream and coffee)
Quiet, fancy steak restaurant
you could take a flyer on Ruth's Chris because the location and setting (the old state house)might appeal to older folks and it's a pretty good restaurant.
But a real no-brainer would be the Oak Room - very quiet, very nice room (ie. "fancy") and top notch service.
Avoid Abe's, Fleming's and Grill 23 if you're worried about too much hustle/bustle.
Hellidays at ECG
Went last night - pretty good, lively time as usual. Can only report on what we had.
Pasta From Hell: seemed hotter than last time if that is possible; appeared to have sausage in the sauce (I was a little delirious after the first bite, but take my word for it) and there were no meatballs. Still rather tasty for the hottest food in town.
Ceviche (shrimp/scallops): this was pretty good - not too spicy; came with these crostini's with plantains in them...
Spicy Sirloin Steak: this was very tasty and it was a pretty substantial cut of meat. Came with spicy broccoli and really good steak fries; topped with a sweet/spicy ketchup. Would recommend.
My wife had the swordfish which was billed as the least spicy thing on the menu (two bombs) but it still had some good heat and was quite tasty for a rather thin cut of swordfish.
My brother's girlfriend got the Vietnamese Seafood Bowl - looked real good - lots of shellfish (shrimp, scallops, calamari, mussels) in broth.
Other menu items: bowl of chili, the usual taco's, no wings; entrees of salmon and lamb three ways.
JP Eats
a second for Cafe D, great place - get the fish tacos!!
Bella Luna is a serviceable sit down pizza place, JP Seafood has reliable sushi. James' Gate is a very good irish bar with decent food.
Best Chinese in Brookline for Christmas Eve
If you are in Brookline, eating Chinese on Christmas Eve, you could do a lot worse that Sichuan Garden in Brookline Village.
If you want a little better ambience, Mandarin Gourmet in Putterham Circle is a good bet. Not a bad 10 minute ride out of the city (and you can check out the Christmas lights).
A steakhouse without the stuffiness
You don't want to spend New Years Eve (or thereabouts) in the Boston Morton's. It's funny, if you live here, it's probably the best, most reliable steakhouse in the city. But if you're looking for a cool place for an evening, there are a few you can target:
Grill 23: good ambience, good bar, ok location
Abe and Louie's: great location, so-so food
Ruth's Chris: really nice setting, sort of subdued, not bad location
(all about the same price range)
Avoid the Met Club. What it lacks in "steakhouse stuffiness" it more than makes up for in suburban restaurant pretentiousness. Its not a steakhouse where you can go with a bunch of dudes.
Taco Places
oh man, that's easy - go to On the Border in Woburn ... you will find the standard mexican fare you and your family crave, including tacos, burritos, tostadas, empanadas, nachos, chimchangas, etc.
There is a huge selection of this stuff.... if you take your family to one of these little authentic mexican places like Tacos Lupita or el Pelon on a weekend night, I gaurantee someone will be dissapointed.
Pre-Celtics game dinner
the date was November 6th, 2004, a week a half after the sox won it all, and a mere one day before my wife and I picked up our dog, Belle.
We were in the Four's in Quincy and that day I ate a Bobby Orr without having drank a beer beforehand. I can not attest to whether or not a beer was drunk while I ate. The only thing I remember is that Michigan State was playing Ohio State and the Bobby Orr was fantastic, as per usual.
Pre-Celtics game dinner
The North End is quite convenient and if you've found a spot near the Garden or paid to park, its a good opportunity to eat in the North End, considering its practically impenetrable on a normal weekend night. There are a million North End recommendations elsewhere on this site.
Personally, I never do a garden event without going to the Four's for a couple buds and a Bobby Orr.
Favorite Places for Spicy Food
great calls on all these ethnic places (need to try India Quality sometime even though I dont do Indian, I love spicy food).
just figured i'd mention the hot sauce at Blue Ribbon BBQ if you like spicy BBQ, that is.
anyone know of a serviceable super spicy buffalo wing?
