Still not finding canned pumpkin

When I was in Atlanta last month I stocked up on cans from the Dekalb Farmer's Market. About two weeks ago I found some at the Publix in Bham. Both times it was "Farmer's Market" brand organic pumpkin.

Ideas for cake contest?

The cannibal cake is hilarious. How do you think they got the mouth to stay open like that?!

Birmingham Restaurant Week?!

We tried Silvertron last night. (I've never been before but I had a great time.) They had a $20.10 menu, with 3 choices for each appetizer, entree, and dessert. They also had suggested beer pairings for each dish and a special "beer dinner" where you can try 3.

I was the only one of my party to go for the special menu, I got the mushroom bruschetta (good), the mahi (very tasty), and bread pudding (also very tasty). My SO got the beer dinner (he chose the 3) with his meal. Another at our table had the "best chicken sandwich of his life." The service was excellent. So, overall we had a great night trying Silvertron.

Ideas for cake contest?

So in a few weeks I'll be taking part in a cake contest to raise money for breast cancer. I want to go all out this year and I need some ideas (especially for cake flavors). They choose winners for best appearance, best flavor, and best overall. The contest is being held at a dental school, so decoration can be cancer or teeth related.

Does anyone have any ideas for cake flavor/filling/frosting combinations?

Bratwurst beyond the obvious

One of our favorites is a Dublin Coddle. You layer bratwurst, bacon, carrots, onions, potatoes in a crock pot and cook with a bit of beer or cider in the bottom.

Chicken 'N Waffles ... how best to eat it?

Never had it with gravy. I put syrup on the chicken and the waffle and eat bites of them together.

fro-yo etiquette question

We have a ton of these kind of places in Bham, and the last time I went to YogurtLab they had the chocolate candy coated sunflower seeds and I wondered the same thing! For days I kept thinking I should go back and just buy a cup of those seeds...

Birmingham -- Pepper Place

Do they sell gallons or half gallons?

Best Chocolate Milk

My favorite is Promised Land Dairy chocolate milk. I have no idea if you'll be able to find it near you (I found it easily in NC and GA, but have a hard time here in AL), and I've only seen it in glass quart containers...so it would probably be expensive for a whole team. But it is the best I've had without question.

Fine-dining college student...any others out there??

I'm a grad student who loves fine dining. Unfortunately I cannot afford it, and was in the same position in undergrad. Meals over $20/person are more or less reserved for when my parents take me out, or my bf and I save up to celebrate a birthday or anniversary (so 3 times a year).

I've never been to a fancy restaurant alone, but I imagine if I had the money and no one to go with I'd have no problem doing it.

When I do get friends to go with me, it's always to food festivals or when restaurants are offering specials/coupons. And we're more likely to go for lunch than dinner. However, we mostly have potluck parties when we want to sample different dishes (not as exciting as restaurant offerings...but we'll take what we can get until we have real jobs!).

Do you use any of these very strange fruits? - moved from Home Cooking board

Regularly I don't use any of them. However, if I see some good-looking star fruit I will buy them and eat them sliced. Also, every year at the science center we have a brain awareness week...one of the most popular demonstrations (for kids AND parents) we do that week is with miracle fruit and lemons.

Tory McPhail (from Commander's) is cooking my supper tonight at the Bright Star. You coming?

I went to Veranda for brunch on Sunday. I had the beignets and the peanut butter pie you mentioned among other things...I've been thinking about those beignets EVERY DAY since then.

Trattoria Centrale - congrats!

I'm a fan of the pizzas. They had one with potato and rosemary which was totally delicious.

The best ice cream in the US (reachable by JetBlue)

oooh yeah this place is outstanding! Probably the freshest ice cream I've had. If you go you have to try the honey toasted almond. I haven't been back to Hillsborough in 5-6 years, but I still think about that flavor from time to time...

Hershey's Chocolate Cake Frosting Help

I've never made the cake recipe, but I have made the frosting recipe from the Hershey's cocoa package. I usually put it on brownies, where it is totally delicious. People at work also love it on cupcakes, but it may be a bit too sweet for most adults.

Preparing for a baby!

I've been freezing meals for dinners lately, here are some I've enjoyed (that froze well):

*Chicken Chili (I doubled this recipe one time with 2 chickens, and then one time I doubled the recipe but used one chicken and twice as many beans. This is my favorite!!):

Smooth homemade chocolate ice cream

I'm not sure what you mean by "powdery"...do you mean grainy? So it isn't smooth?

What's your fantasty Food Truck?

Cannoli.

Homemade ice cream - question about chilling custard base before churning

As far as I can tell it doesn't...

Could your/ IS your significant other a picky eater?

My bf is the opposite of a picky eater, he will eat ANYTHING regardless of quality or taste. This makes our relationship fairly easy because I can prepare anything or suggest any restaurant and he will be all over it.

However, by default this makes ME the picky eater simply because I want to enjoy whatever I eat. So, whenever I cook something that comes out awful, he doesn't understand why I won't eat it. And he can't fathom why I'm not interested in certain things at the grocery store or at a friend's house.

Question about massachusetts minimum wage for waitress & credit card tip taxes

A waitress friend of mine (in GA) told me she always hoped people would tip her in cash, because she would get the whole amount, whereas the credit card tips were taxed so she lost a bit of each tip.

So, assuming this is the protocol and servers are taxed on CC tips, your friend should only be taxed on the amount she earned ($90), NOT the $180. Why would the government tax the same amount twice?

Where can I find fresh lemongrass in Atlanta?

Are you talking about the Dekalb Farmers Market?

This Makes Me Crazy!

I'm with you that we don't really need the excess salt. Growing up my mom wouldn't even let us have a salt shaker on the table ("there's enough salt in the food already!"), so I believe I'm more sensitive to salt than most...I've never felt the need to add salt to a plated meal before.

I also tend to skip the salt and pepper step in recipes...am I really going to taste the salt and pepper I sprinkled on before cooking after I cover the meat in a marsala sauce? Or cooking it down in a stew?

What to do with jar of fig jam?

What to do with cooked chicken?

I've never been big on chili, but I can't get enough of this one.

Rice Crispy Treats without butter?

They wouldn't taste as good. Unimaginable in my house!

What to do with jar of fig jam?

I second the jam on warm brie with crackers. I almost ate an entire round of brie myself after making this...
