Chile Rellenos in Marin?

Taqueria San Jose's chile rellenos have improved over the years. They certainly can be described as decent. They come with a light tomato sauce and lettuce on the side. I get the combination with rice and beans. You can't beat the price. Just get two chiles rellenos as their tacos suck. They put them in the same container on top of the other food so they get soggy. that said, I usually get a carnitas taco for my dog as part of the combination.Once they wrapped and bagged separately. New to Marin (Mill Valley)...having second thoughts about leaving the East Bay

Lotus Cuisine of India is best Indian in SR, 8.99 buffet good to get a feel of the food, but the bengan bharta(eggplant) is the best dish on the menu and is NEVER on the buffet. Also the basil pesto naan is to die for. The roof retracts on warm nights, it is a lovely setting, servers are professional.

(Om is good - some dishes just ok- have good dosa)

Sushi-Ko, Larkspur Landing - pretty good sushi.
We've tried a few different places as well, no favorites, maybe others can speak to their faves.

Thai - Royal Thai is our favorite - try Salmon Yaang (BBQ) for your husband, Tofu Kra-Prow Krob(pressed fried tofu with cashews, basil.) and Pineapple Fried rice(Veggie) with glutens.
and Kaeng Daeng Pak(red curry with pumpkin and mixed veggies) is best veggie curry.

Tha Siam at larkspur landing is cheaper, and good.

Mulberry Pizza off 101 Smith Ranch Road(should be about 20-25 mins if no traffic) has vegan cheese and the best pizza crust. They also sell slices if someone doesn't want the vegan cheese or they do half-half. I get the greek, substitute eggplant for the pepperoni with vegan cheese. (Specify no feta if you don't want that either.)

San Jose Taqueria on 4th street under the freeway (Cash only) best burritto's (Al pastor for your husband) Also have Chile relleno for you. Free Salsa bar - complete with soccer on tv and blaring jukebox. Make sure to tip for best service if you are white.

Yet-Wah, now that Jenny Lows closed - go to place for hot and sour soup. Good veggie options.

Saigon Village at 720 B street in SR has ok Vietnamese - I haven't tried their veggie menu yet, but noticed the last time we carried out they had a menu available. Their pho and chicken bun for your husband is acceptable if you don't feel like driving over to EB. Usually we just get food from SF - on Irving, since my husband drives by on his way home every night.

Sol, the best veggie sandwiches, also specials. Their chicken is fabulous. Salads are great.

Falafel Hut on 4th st has spicy falafel, ok mediterranean plate.

Mexican Market in San Rafael [Mi Pueblo]

The whole chicken being grilled over mesquite outside in front is the best chicken around. The sides are average - I skip and just make our own sides. We tried the tacos inside, too, but have been back at least 4 times for the chicken.
It is tasty the next day, too. They have a nice salsa in the salsa bar across from the meat dept. The meat dept is fabulous.

taco troubles . Need some guidance .

Instead of pork shoulder, consider grilled pork tenderloin. I make a marinade that results in a crispy exterior and succulent interior. Then you slice it thin, and allow guests to pile it on the soft tacos themselves. You could also grill the skirt steak at the same time.
Good to cook both medium rare, will continue cooking and good whether piping hot or room temperature.
It would be great with chimichurri type sauce, guacamole, prepared mango salsa, sour cream, fresh tomato-corn jalapeno relish, so everyone could pile on whatever appealed to them.
I would find a good brand of tortillas before the event, usually fresh local brands are best. Simply cook up in a fry pan each side for about 15 seconds and they should soften and be nice and warm (put in low oven, on plate to keep them warm until serving.) Get a helper for this. Mix it up -use both flour and corn.

It won a Beef Contest about 15 years ago, but is excellent on pork or flank steak. (Probably best to do something different than this marinade on the skirt steak for variety.)
I would serve with corn on the cob, fruit salad or watermelon, and chips, of course.

Wheat Berry Salad with Harissa and Pistachios

Made this last night, substituting Lundberg wild rice mix for wheatberries. Yummy, and I served it with lamb shoulder chops. I also substituted Tofutti sour cream for the yogurt as I can't eat dairy.

At Hess the tours are free and the wine is good. I think they offer art tours, too. I never tire of driving there.

Need recommendations for the Sunday San Rafael Farmers Market

Capay organic lettuce, Santa Rosa Fish market has great salmon burgers, $6 each or 4 or $20, get them early, they run out. Also, their peppered, smoked salmon is to die for. The Brickmaiden bread is good (wholewheat with sesame, or the ficelle), Panorama Bread has great open face breads topped with veggies and cheese, Brioche bakery has the best fruit danish and ciabatta rolls. At Bruins be sure to get the heirloom tomatoes, they are the best. This vendor leaves in midsummer. The organic dim sum is good, not so much their buns, but the paella is even better and a steal at $12 - loaded with seafood and served with greens. Also the oven baked pizza is phenomenal. Once corn is in season, the best is in the aisle by the pony rides, expensive but worth it. The asian farmers offer great snap peas, bok choy, leeks, thai basil, kohlrabi, etc.

Persimmon pudding, salad, cookies … BORING

Best Persimmon Muffins ever - adapted from 1001 Muffins, by Gregg Gillespie
1 cup all purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
3/4 cup sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (or more to taste)
1/2 teaspoon allspice
1/2 tsp nutmeg
3/4 cup freshly toasted, then chopped fine, shelled pine-nuts
1 cup fresh persimmon pulp (use soft persimmons)
2 tablespoons butter, melted
1 tablespoon milk if needed(won't need if persimmon is ripe)

1. Preheat oven 400 degrees. Lightly grease 12 muffin cups or use paper.
2. In a large bowl, blend flour, baking powder, soda, sugar, spices and nuts together.
3. Beat persimmons and butter together in a small bowl until smooth. Gradually combine the two mixtures until the dry ingredients are just moistened. Add milk if needed.
4. Spoon batter into muffin tin or cups, filling about 3/4 full. Bake for 15-20 minutes, until toothpick inserted comes out clean. Cool on rack, or serve warm. They will be dark, flattish and tasty. They are wonderfully persimmony. Original recipe called for pecans, but I think the pine nuts go better with the flavors. I make this every year when persimmons arrive at the farmers markets.

Strange Pairings that Taste Uncommonly Good

Try tuna salad with guacamole on wheat bread sometime. Drippy but yummy.

I also have tried and liked guacamole on fresh picked farmstand corn on the cob -- called it dinner on hot summer nights.

Picante in Berkeley

I have eaten at Picante at least a hundred times in the last five years. The canitas tostada is by far the best I have ever eaten, anywhere, and I lived in a mexican neighborhood in chicago for five years. Try it with a flour tortilla, refried beans.
The chicken flautas are also excellent, but not to take out, eat-in only.
I do not like the burritors except for the manchanmateles. The chicken enchiladas do not use the same mole - they suck, as do the tacos, in my opinion.
