Lunch for 6 Women near Marriott Marquis

Amber India is right downstairs (but it is not a hotel restaurant!)

Where to have a chic, elegant, impressive gourmet lunch (preferably prix fixe) near Market Street./Union Square?

When my friends and I want a nice lunch at Union Square, we go to the Rotunda at NM. I much prefer the food at Zuni, but wouldn't want to spend the time getting there and back, even on a streetcar. If you don't mind spending the time to voyage somewhere else, by all means consider or Perbacco - you can walk to Perbacco from Union Square in about 15 to 20 minutes. Have fun!

LA Hound's First Time in SF (aka "Help!")

Just chiming in with a couple of seconds - love Ame, which is very near your hotel. Aziza is also fun and great food - take a car as it is a schlep way out to the Richmond. We recently had a wonderful meal at Amber India which is right near your hotel...we were there at dinner, but they may also be open for lunch.

I know you said no seafood, but I think of Tadich more as an SF experience than seafood. You might want to give it a try for lunch - go early or late, no reservations and they get crowded at this time of year.

Enjoy your visit!!

Need Recc for Fun/Delish Daddy-Daughter Dinner in SF

Fifth Floor has undergone a lot of changes (to put it mildly) - I haven't been recently though I've been interested in trying it. You will also be near Ame which is fabulous - and you will find lots of comments about it! I haven't been to Laiola, though it is in my neighborhood - I am a big fan of Aziza though. (And I love Zuni, too!)

Freddie's Sandwiches (North Beach), SF - any good?

OMG, has this place been there for ages and ages? I remember loving it as a kid. I'm going to have to go by there and check it out! Thanks for this memory!

What does everyone think of farallon?

Honestly, I'd rather go to Ame.

Henry's Hunan coming to Noe Valley

I love the noodle dish with the cabbage and the hotter sauce. It is on the lunch menu, but I often order it in the evening for take out from the Broadway/Sansome location and they don't even bat an eye (at least not any more!)

Nectarine dessert at Zuni is just that

Perfect - thanks for that!!

Nectarine dessert at Zuni is just that

I am a huge fan of Zuni myself, but I am howling with laughter. Did you look for hidden cameras? Seriously - at minimum it should have been daintily cut and your friends should have been told when they ordered to expect a piece of fruit! Good thing someone didn't just lob it out from the kitchen!

Astoria, Oregon

Thank you very much for the suggestions!

Astoria, Oregon

Hi - I am an SF Chowhounder and I will be in Astoria OR for business next week for almost a week. I would love to hear about some good options for lunch and/or dinner. I've done a bit of research and am interested in Fulio's, Ship's Inn and The Stand in Seaside. Any comments on those or further suggestions? Thanks in advance for your help!!

Good Eats, Great Atmosphere & 2 Kids

You don't actually think anyone here would recommend Rainforest or any other chain, do you?!? Good grief!! Try a board search for Fisherman's Wharf, North Beach and Union Square and you will get some ideas...Also check out the "New to this Board" post - let us know what kind of price range you are thinking of. How old are the boys? Are you saying you don't want Asian" A bit more info will get you much better and more useful responses.

Ame or Slanted Door?

I'd do Ame for dinner and lunch at Slanted Door!

6 nights in SF

Back to the anniversary dinner, I second Dining Room at the Ritz and add Ame to the list. I would put Aziza and Zuni on the list as fun mid-range places to check out. Do you know which neighborhoods you will be visiting yet?

Can't Miss Places

I love (and would suggest to an out of towner) Zuni, Aziza and Ame. Your question is so broad, it is actually hard to answer! Have you been to SF before? How long will you be here? Do you want East Bay or SF places or a balance of the two?

Four Peeps for $100 (or under)

I think the prix fixe (3 courses) at Le Charm is $30/person. A bit more than you wanted to pay, but a thought if someone in your group is squeamish about ethnic food. Of course, alcohol would add to that.

Visiting San Francisco from Ireland for 4 Days

Great list - these are some of my favorite spots, except that I haven't tried La Ciccia. I agree with the others, Colibri isn't worth it and you will find much better Mexican in LA. Tadich would make a fun lunch - they don't take reservations so it works well if you go at a slightly "off" hour. Also, order something very simple - sand dabs, sole, something grilled. I like Slanted Door but would definitely try it for lunch and wouldn't substitute it for Zuni, which I love. I'm a huge fan of the Caesar salad, roast chicken and espresso granita! Enjoy your visit!

Best Croque Monsieur in SF?

This was my thought as well.

Fig Pantry closed temporarily

Oh dear, I have a friend whose business was in that location before the Fig moved in...as you can imagine, this isn't the first time that has happened. Sorry to hear it.

Michael Mina

If you do a search of this board you will find many comments about Michael Mina.

Clementine report

Thanks for the nice write-up. We used to love Clementine - haven't yet been to Chapeau! either, so we will be looking forward to the new Clementine!

Where to eat with 12 year old during San Fran trip

Sadly, I can attest that there is a Rainforest Cafe in the Wharf area. My nieces insisted on going there for a bday dinner - they thoroughly enjoyed it, I was beside myself! I agree with the suggestion of Boudin. If you do a search for Fisherman's Wharf, you will find a lot of information. Chinatown always seems to be a big hit with kids - my nieces loved Yank Sing for dim sum. It is very "dim sum novice friendly".

Brooklynites Chowing Down in SF (Long)

What a great report! I'm glad you enjoyed yourselves so much and had such a memorable anniversary!

Slanted Door vs. Ana Mandara?

I much prefer the food at Slanted Door, but the atmosphere is certainly not romantic. There are a lot of hard surfaces and the restaurant is very noisy. Ana Mandara is a pretty room - dark (but no view), but I didn't think much of the food. So if food is the priority, go to Slanted Door. If the romantic setting is the priority, Ana Mandara.

Michael Mina, Boulevard, Quince, Delfina.........

Okay, just to make your decision-making a bit more difficult, I'd think of a couple of different things. How about dinner at Ame, Quince, Dining Room at the Ritz, Acquerello or Gary Danko and lunch at Zuni, Perbacco, Boulevard or Delfina. Is Bar Tartine open for lunch? Gets rave reviews though I've not been there. If you were my friends and I were making recommendations, I'd add Ame and Zuni for sure (for dinner and lunch respectively). I agree that Mina is over-rated and though I like some of the items at Aqua, it is quite corporate and I'd go to Ame over Aqua any (and every) day! Enjoy your visit - congrats on your anniversary!

Copper River Source in Bay Area?

Palomino used to serve it, but I'm not sure if they still do. Don't know that you will hear any positive things about Palomino on this board, though!

Van Ness & Sutter, San Francisco

Tajine is on Polk between Bush and Pine.

Intimate birthday meal

I checked out A16 - for Sat. night the only time is 10:30 pm! But you may want to give them a call.

Seeking quiet, mellow SF restaurant for 8

I was thinking of Cafe Majestic as well and agree that the entree prices are above your price point, but definitely check it out. The food is very good and the room is very pretty and nice and quiet!

Intimate birthday meal

I just did the suggested search of Open Table for the SF Gate Top 100 and it looks like you will have quite a few to choose from - though some will be out of your price range, I think. Bar Tartine, Bar Crudo and Aziza are available - so are Ame and Aquerello but I think those two will be too pricey. Even Zuni has availablility it looks like! I would go via Open Table for sure at this late date or you will be making a lot of calls. Actually, I always use Open Table when I can!
