Vegan-ish friendly in SF?

Loving Hut: easily the worst food I've had in the last decade. Just nasty.

Sacramento's best fruit and vegetables?

I shopped at Corti Brothers and at the Kaveri grocery. The former is a very good store, with good crusty bread, good vegetables, and interesting regional wines (I like Mokelumne Glen's zweigelt). The latter's a good Indian grocery store, perfumed with hing. I was able to visit Kaveri Madras Cafe a few days later, and had some very good steam-table food plus a masala dosa and a perfect uttapam.

Sacramento's best fruit and vegetables?

Thanks very much. I'm now planning to visit Corti Brothers, then scoot over to Kaveri Madras Cuisine, then continue on my way to Hope Valley.

Sacramento's best fruit and vegetables?

Thank you, but it would be hard to justify using so much petrol to improve the quality of my salads. I'm bound for Hope Valley, traveling along 50 out of the capital. A store in Sacramento would be best.

Sacramento's best fruit and vegetables?

I'll be passing through on a Monday and would like recommendations for farm stands and grocery stores with excellent local lettuce, citrus, Asian pears, rapini, and anything else that's terrific these days.

Japanese cucumbers in northwestern San Francisco?

Sounds much like the dish I made. But here's the thing: rather than slice the cucumbers you smack the hell out of them with the flat of your cleaver, then chop. The irregular shapes have great surface area to collect dressing.

The second kind?

Thank you, Robert. I'm beginning to suspect the distinction is not between different sorts of lotus but between young and old. I think I'll write to Ms Dunlop and inquire.

The second kind?

According to Fuchsia Dunlop, there's two sorts of comestible lotus root. Anyone know where to find type two?

Japanese cucumbers in northwestern San Francisco?

Walker, you are right on. SFbing let me down. But the Persian cucumbers worked okay, so I'm not pursuing a vendetta. (I buy the stubbly guys at the Ferry Building farmers market from time to time; the old couple with a stand in the rear area adjacent to brown rice and Frog Poop Hollow.)

Japanese cucumbers in northwestern San Francisco?

Couldn't be a better location. Thank you.

Japanese cucumbers in northwestern San Francisco?

For my annual lunar celebration, I'd like some excellent Japanese cucumbers, small with stubble. The following shopping zones are preferred: Irving & Clement. What have you seen recently?

Mexican cooking supplies in San Francisco?

Thank you.

Mexican cooking supplies in San Francisco?

I'd like to buy a tortilla press and some other items. Rather than spend at Williams-Sonoma, I'd like to know where Mexican immigrants go for their kitchen needs. Somewhere in the heart of the Mission?

Where can I find mending roubing (门钉肉饼)?

In my experience the two are different. Xian bing is a hockey puck; rou bing is a pizza.

Myoga ginger and other Japanese items?

Many thanks, Librarian. I'll soon be Nijiya bound.

Myoga ginger and other Japanese items?

The booklet for the "Aruitemo, Aruitemo" DVD includes some recipes. I need to buy konbu, myoga ginger, pickled shiso, daikons with their leaves. Where to go in San Francisco or Marin?

Vegetarian Chinese in Hong Kong?

I ended up finding several not mentioned by my respondents, most importantly 功德林 (Kung Tak Lam, http://www.openrice.com/restaurant/sr2.htm?shopid=1753), a Shanghai-based chain of Buddhist restaurants that has several branches in the area. Excellent dim sum, with attentive service provided this tall white man. For those who read Chinese, here is a wonderful resource: http://www.vegsochk.org/shops/vegilist.htm, a list of all the vegetarian restaurants in the region, with links to reviews.

Vegetarian Chinese in Hong Kong?

Thanks, M_. I have been to Hong Kong and China and Taiwan and many Chinese restaurants in the USA, so I'm aware of this. But some offer better vegetarian food than others.

Vegetarian Chinese in Hong Kong?

I am not looking for fancy. I am looking for delicious, typical, classic Taiwanese, Sichuanese, Hunanese, and Cantonese food. The restaurant need not be vegetarian, so long as there are plenty of excellent vegetable dishes on the menu. Since I am looking forward to exploring the remoter parts of Hong Kong, all neighborhoods, islands, townships are contenders.

Places in Petaluma

I used to go to Real Doner quite often, but the service can be appalling, and the food's not nearly as good as Afendi, so that's where I now go.

Tom Wilson Oranges at Andronico

I went by and asked on Sunday: no Tom Wilson navels yet.

Jai Yun Gripe

The service was absolutely excellent when I lunched at Jai Yun earlier this month. The waitress has only been in the USA for a few weeks, but her English is good, she is extremely professional, and the chef came out to talk with us about the meal.

Jai Yun Open For Lunch

Earlier this month lunch prices were $25, $35 and $55 or so. I don't remember exactly, but no $18 option.

Jai Yun - Major Question

$25 was the lowest price mentioned when I recently visited Jai Yun for lunch. We went for $50 (or was it $55) and had no regrets. Fantastic place.

Alsatian Riesling

There is no connection between dryness and the scent of gasoline. Many sweet German wines have a distinct petrol nose.

Favorite Supermarket in SF?

I would pay a cover charge to shop at Rainbow.

I Once Had Good Vegan Pizza -- This Was Disgusting

I often have pizza al vegan, which I prefer to do without any cheese, faux or veritable. Among the best providers is Petaluma's New Yorker Restaurant, on Petaluma Boulevard just south of the Mystic.

Good ice?

We have good water in San Francisco, but do we have good ice? Looking for odd shapes, crystalline clarity, women who chop great blocks into single-malt-worthy chunks.

Heirloom apples

I decided on Walker's Apples and will be going on Saturday. In his article, Leigh mentioned the following with approval: Cox’s , Russets, Howgate Wonder, Charles Ross, Lord Lambourne, and James Grieve.
