Ariadne in Newtonville

Any recent experiences at Ariadne to report? I'm meeting a colleague for lunch, and Newtownville is kind of a mid-point between our offices.

Thanks in advance for your input!

Oriole 9 - Woodstock, NY

Stopped into Oriole 9 after a hike in the area. What a gem! The lunch menu was varied and interesting. Everything on the menu sounded good - almost looking a little ambitious. But we were so delighted!. We had delicious tilapia sandwiches with wasabi yogurt sauce. The tilapia was cooked so nicely - moist and tasty. One of our party had a roasted vegetable salad. Yum!! The small restaurant was very busy - with two large groups - yet the service was terrific - and the delivery didn't take long at all even with those big groups' orders in ahead of ours. I would definitely go back again. Check it out!

Terrapin Rhinebeck review

We were looking forward to our meal at Terrapin in Rhineback this past Friday - but I have to say I wouldn't recommend it to anyone. The location/building is interesting - they did a nice job renovating an old church. The food - sounding good in the menu - was mediocre. The service was terrible. The waiter was haughty and uppity, and acted as if he was a CEO too busy to spend time with the likes of us. Not sure what he was in a hurry for, because it sure wasn't to take care of his tables. We asked multiple times to have additional bread brought to the table before we finally gave up. We were never asked if we wanted addtional wine or drinks. When we asked if there were any specials his stock answer was "EVERYTHING is special" - something we overheard him deliver to each of the tables nearby us. Well, the service definitely wasn't special. Knowing him, he probably thought our very low tip was a reflection of our tipping style, not because his performance didn't merit even that amount. I was tempted to say something to the hostess on the way out, but got the sense that they probably wouldn't care. A real disappointment.

Best Hummus in MA?

Second on Shadi's - a good source North of Boston. Check out Phoenicia - 240 Cambridge St in Boston. It's Lebanese - they have great baba ganoush too.

Saturday Brunch recos

Hey Crew - Making plans for brunch in Boston this weekend and interested in your thoughts. Flexible on neighborhood.

Looking for a nice place - not necessarily just to spend a lot of $$, but to have it be a little more special. Emphasis on great coffee and excellent service, not too noisy or hectic, but kind of hip.

It's not the last time I went out for brunch of course, but last year we went to The Fed (prior to converting to Mooooo) and had such a great experience there - food was good, coffee delicious, service outstanding. I don't know if I'm all that exciting about checking out Moooo, but will consider it if you encourage me to do so.

Suggestions??

Babalu - Minneapolis

Had a fun/great meal at this restaurant about 4 years ago, and decided to re-visit it this weekend. The appetizers/tapas were good, the entrees okay, and the whole thing really more expensive than it needed to be. I'm not afraid to pay big money for a great experience; this one didn't cut it, though. Rumour has it that Babalu has turned into more of a night hot spot - we didn't stick around to see any of that action. For just dinner, you may want to consider some of the other top notch choices in the Twin Cities.

Biagio/Waltham

I was interested in this place after driving by several times - looked really nice from the outside. Tried it out last night. It's a big space, and they clearly spent $$ renovating, but they could have used some advice in planning such a big space. The bar areas lack warmth; the main dining room is cavernous. Our waitress was at best indifferent - and didn't even give us cursory visits to refresh bar drinks, etc. Although nearby tables seemed to get pleasant, attentive service. The salads we had were good, the rest of the food wasn't anything special. One of my dining partners ordered the "wild mushroom ravioli." I'm pretty sure the mushrooms were from a can - or so over cooked they may as well have been in one. The menu seemed ambitiously pricey. Maybe it was an off night (although it was Friday) - but I won't be going back any time soon.

Calle Ocho

Thanks to everyone who posted info/reviews of Calle Ocho. Went this weekend and had a fabulous meal, and a terrific time. Great menu, well prepared food, good timing (not at all rushed) and excellent drinks. I will go back and recommend it to friends.
