Mama Mia! It's been a long time! Part of our old gang were asking about you! Did you know that Anne passed? And yes, some of the posters are on the Mr. Lake board.
Fat man heading to the Big Easy next week.
Note, as of very recent, J'anita's is now at the Rendon Inn.

Need Eugene rec, only here today!
Thanks! I'll check out their website.
Please, any other comments or advice is greatly appreciated!
Luv to the hounds...
Need Eugene rec, only here today!
Hi gang, I just blew into town for one day & have a lunch date in 2 hrs.
Taking my hosts to dinner tonight. They go to chains.
Meeting a biz associate for lunch who says her fav place is Cafe Yumm.
So unless I come up with some really fast that's where we're going.
I live in New Orleans. I've been to Eugene a few times, but it's probably
been 10 yrs. I remember Cafe Zenon & Cafe Central & am confusing the two.
One was on the corner & had a large, eclectic American menu.
I preferred this place, it was good & there was something for everyone.
But which one was it? Any other recs? I could use a few, I'm a meat eater
who's been deprived for a week at a veg camp. My travel mate is pescatarian &
likes blander food & my hosts like chains & live in Eugene.
She said she'd be hard pressed to fufill my request of a local non chain place that serves
local food!!
HeLp!!!!
Looseleaf Tea
Indonique! I've been thinking about you! I miss your tea shop. Any plans to reopen?
Do you sell your chai cookies? They were great & I'd love to get some! Thanks for responding to this thread!
Best Ginger Ale?
World Market has 7oz bottles of Reed's Extra Ginger Brew for 8/$3.99.
I find I am perfectly satisfied with one bottle & really don't need the whole 12 oz of a reg. size.
Reed's is my fav, Bundaberg is avail, so I'll get it when I can't find Reed's.
Bleinhem is ok, but not 1st choice by any means.
Mainstream - Seagram's wins for a bitier bite.
Gus was like drinking water.
I often make my own with ginger, lime, honey & sparkling water.
ginger chews
I've had Reed's, Ginger People & another brand that I get at the Asian grocery.
To me, the Asian grocery store one is the strongest. I don't know the name of the brand. White package, blue writing & some red kanji (iirc). Have not tried the mango.
Need to try the peanut ones on your rec.
Metairie dining
Paz, I agree with you on Kanno & Little Tokyo.
My 2 favorites too . . . esp for Sushi & sashimi.
However, Shogun does have a few things I like on the menu. Most of it is cooked or salads.
I had a very early lunch at Little Tokyo on Saturday & almost did dinner at Kanno! .
But we originally we were going to Shogun for a lunch special.
Their bean sprout salad & cabbage salad is like no other! I love their broccoli salad.
Their baked seafood used to be THE baked seafood (had it a month ago & sadly not as good as it once was). I sometimes get the NY Strip for lunch which comes with all of my favorite salads. Every sushi joint in this town has some special item that we can only get at that one place. If you're going for fresh raw fish Kanno or Little Tokyo is right on!
Metairie dining
I'll 2nd Sandro's Trattoria. We thoroughly enjoyed it & had a great lunch date there!

Thanks Nikinik for 2nding the rec for Fillipo's!
Banana Blossom, where the old Cafe Zen used to be.
We've been at least 6 times already!> I'll meet you there for lunch if you like!
Looking for budget dining in blue jeans
this is my way.
Take meat & cheese off of bread. Olive salad follows.
Pre heat a toaster oven that has a pizza stone inside for about 20 min.
By this time, the meat & cheese has time to de chill a bit.
Place bread in oven - directly on pizza stone - inside of bread up.
Heat for 2 minutes to slightly crispy & warmed thru.
Place olive salad, meat & cheese back on the bread & cover.
Press down slightly with your hand (don't smash it) & then enjoy!
A muffaletta should never be nuked under any circumstances.
Random Ramblings 12/24-12/26
"They wanted to eat at Bourbon House, so I kept my reservations to myself like a good group member."
"Unfortunately, that was a mistake....after a very mediocre meal and bad service, one of the busboys slammed us with an insult as we left."
Niki, I'm sorry to hear of this experience. I'm a little confuse by this 1st sentence in quotes. Did you eat at Bourbon House on Christmas night & cancelled your reservations elsewhere? Curious where if that was the case. Also wondering what kind of insult the busboy slammed you with..... that is something we need to know about. I do not tolerate this kind of behaviour. I'm a life long local btw.

Liz, my new office is very close to Fillipo's. Please tell me what you had!
I trust your palate! Hope you're doing well.
Disappointing food trip to NOLA (very long review)
Sockster, I suggest you consider starting a new thread for your topic.
Read the board of recent suggestions & perhaps ask some further questions.
We truly want to help!
Banana Blossom Thai Cafe
3 of my MFDCs went for lunch yesterday. They all loved it!
My husband said that we're going to be going there a lot!
I didn't get the full story of what they ordered, but will later today.
His only complaint is that it could have been a little spicier.
Our other friends said it was the perfect spice level for them.
We're going for dinner tonight with a friend who is veg/vegan.
That will give an additional slant on the restaurant.
I'll report back soon!

I am so excited!
We've been waiting for Thai on the WB for a long time!
And no MSG!
I stumbled upon it this morning & can't wait to try it out!
Has anyone here tried it yet?

The flavor of the roast beef & natural au jus is just right! I do ask them to toast my french bread because that's the way I like it & it helps because I also ask for extra gravy!
Italian Hoagies in New Orleans
You have plenty of great suggestions. I have never tasted this sandwich you mention, but if I asked my dad to bring me a sandwich from home & he didn't, well, I'd cry. C'mon, indulge your son! Even if it's not so good after a day, so what? He'll be thankful you tried & at least it won't drive him as crazy as not having one at all.
Totally Disgusted at Supermarket--Am I too Finicky?
I don't think you're over reacting at all. I'd say something to the mgr. This bagger needs to know the protocol of bagging groceries! Leaving them for you to pick up off of the floor is not cool at all.
I rinse off milk cartons & juice cartons before putting them in my fridge.
Keeps the fridge cleaner as well.
Yes, I wipe off the handle of the cart.
Many of you might not notice the gross things people do in the grocery store while shopping. I'm a detective & scientist at heart & I just see these things, I'm not looking for them.
Hopefully your talk with the store mgr will raise awareness!
newspaper food sections worth reading
Agree with New Orleans Times Picayune, (altho years ago it was many times better) http://www.nola.com/food/
I've always liked The Miami Herald as well & have subscribed for years.
Would love to read more current replies!
Info on Hillery's on Toulouse?
They've closed the restaurant. Good news is you can find them in Algiers Point, just a ferry ride across the mighty Mississippi River. New place is Aunt Leni's. It's a little cafe/coffee shop. You can get a full meal. Call first to find out when Hillary & Ed will be there. I went early in the a.m. on Monday & neither were there yet. I usually see them in the evenings.
La Boca
La Boca is da bomb. I can't recommend it enough.
I'm dreaming about my next visit!
JAG, if you're reading this, I'm ready to go when you are!
Berkeley gumbo (with potato salad) [split from New Orleans]
I'd love to know the name of the gumbo making hot dog joint. Have friends out that way who would love to try it.
As far as Streetcar Sandwiches goes, ah . . . . we miss it too. R.I.P.
Potato Salad in Gumbo
We always had potato salad at gumbo meals, but it was always cold. Or at least never hot or warm perhaps room temp & starting to get a chill. It was served along side the gumbo. My daddy, of German & French descent, was originally from Napoleonville. Wish he were alive today to ask him how he ate it growing up! My mama, being Spanish, may have insisted the potato salad be cold (and well seasoned). I'll have to ask her, but I know she might not remember all the whys. We always had potato salad at holiday meals. It was very big in our house and was well seasoned. Loved it & people raved over it. In fact, I think we must have had it at least once a month.
On the other hand, my husband's family was originally from Chackahoula & later Houma. His aunt always served the potato salad warm or hot. Just huge chunks of potatoes, eggs & mayo, gently tossed. No seasonings! I was pretty grossed out by it, too hugely chunky & very bland! All of them are gone now, so there's no one to ask about it. Is this typical for this area?
Cash strapped weekend in NO
Big Shirley's on Carrollton. Agreed, not stellar. But good. And cheap.
Frankly when someone asks for cheap, sometimes it is really hard to walk the line of cheap enough & good enough!
BTW, I am just remembering that we also had jambalaya with the fried chicken at Dunbars. Shoot.... I might have to go there today!
Wine Shop Help, Etc..
The Bacchanal link is no longer working.
I used to go all the time when Chef Pete was cooking on Sunday nights.
Sure do miss his food.
So please tell me who has been cooking on Sunday nights? Any other nights?
Thanks!
Best "Muff" and Oyster Po'Boy
Let's hope so!
Please don't tell me it been years since he has had a muffaletta!
I did like Nor-Joe's, but just couldn't do it again.
Best "Muff" and Oyster Po'Boy
I love DiMartino's muff & that one is my favorite, with the exception of making my own.
I do not like the cheese melted & meats hot. The toaster run that DiMartino's muff goes thru really just toasts the bread. It does not get the meats/cheese hot. The olive salad goes on after it is toasted.
