Aimless (DC) Tourist, Looking for Non-Tourist Spots
take a cab (or bus, though i'm not sure what line) up to capitol hill and try Pike Street Fish Fry--a little hole in the wall with tasty and hot fried seafood and fries. while you're up there, you might head over to Oddfellows cafe--i don't recommend for dinner, but drinks and dessert are awesome, plus the atmosphere is really cool. Smith is a really great gastropub up on 15th ave (probably need to take a short cab ride) and if you're up there and looking for a more substantial dinner, Poppy is a really neat experience--they serve "thali's" which is a plate of 7-11 small dishes that all complement one another. nice atmosphere there, too.
Seattle Weekend.. 4 days...suggestions please!
ray's boathouse has a fantastic view of the water and the food is good. you can also eat upstairs for a less fancy vibe, less expensive bill.
my favorite seattle restaurant is anchovies & olives on capitol hill. the best PNW food i've eaten since moving here, plus a really great oyster power hour.
Good restaurant for bachelorette night...?
Oh and the party will only be 4-5 people.
Good restaurant for bachelorette night...?
No worries--she probably wouldn't attempt ordering anything.
Another problem is--and I hope this isn't too annoying--but I don't know where to stay. I was going to set a couple of the priceline filters and try to get a good deal at a 4 star hotel.
Good restaurant for bachelorette night...?
My friend and I are meeting in the city for a pre-wedding celebration, lady style. We're not traditional girly-girls--she's put a ban on the bridal-veil-w/-condoms getup, and there will not be any clubbing. We will probably avoid standalone bars because one member of the wedding party (bride's sis) is underage.
So....I'm looking for a fun, maybe trendy, definitely interesting restaurant to have a late dinner with drinks. New American. A place that feels like a night out on the town. As for location--close to downtown? We'll be staying in a hotel and I'm not familiar with Chicago--so if you have any thoughts....
(Sorry, not a lot to go on, but I'm pretty clueless here...)
good food for casual money, plus drinks please
you're right--cafe presse is just what i was looking for....
good food for casual money, plus drinks please
i'm new to seattle and job-hunting. i came here from new york where i ate out more than i ate in, and my favorite spot was a little place near my apt. where my husband and i could linger over amazing pasta and a couple glasses of wine and get out for under $40.
we're on a budget but we still need to get out of the house--does anyone have any suggestions? i feel like seattle is populated with good restaurants, but so far i don't know of a lot that won't break the bank. i'm trying to be money-smart and still indulge, which i hope is possible......ideas?
Fish: Where do you buy yours?
I was disappointed with Wild Salmon in QA (A&J Meats)--their selection was really slim and prices were high. Also, I found lots of bones in my fillet.
Good Delivery in Queen Anne?
I just moved from NYC where delivery practically kept me alive...and where you could get anything and everything delivered and it arrived hot and delicious (I'm homesick.) I haven't figured out the good delivery places here yet--anyone have suggestions?
I'm looking for thai, tacos, pizza, and sandwiches/burgers.
Tired of my pizza delivery place...looking for new options--Brooklyn-Slope
if you are in south slope, you must try Peppino's (5th Ave b/t 10th and 11th). i used to order from La Villa until we moved a few blocks south and discovered Peppino's.
it really is amazing pizza--great sauce, crust, ingredients, plus way more economical than La Villa. also, the staff is a lot friendlier.

Anyone been to The Grocery on Smith?
I went there for my husband's birthday dinner about a year ago--it wasn't very memorable of a meal, I didn't even really enjoy my dish and for the life of me can't remember what I even ordered. The space itself felt a little stuffy, and the service a little too attentive to feel comfortable. I felt overall like the room had a "hushed" feel, and was ready to leave about ten minutes into our meal.
I kind of feel like some of the restaurants on Smith get over-talked. Chestnut, for example, which I found to be nothing short of terrible after hearing so many good things.
I like Applewood (Park Slope).
Birthday dinner recs for a seattle newbie
Thanks for the great recs. Tin Table looks great. So does Matt's but it is closed this weekend--they are cooking at James Beard.
Thoughts on The Tin Table?
I was recommended the Tin Table by a chowhounder for my husband's birthday, but I can't find a thread on it. I'm new to Seattle, so I was wondering if anyone had any thoughts....
The menu looks great and it is the right price, plus the right neighborhood (Capitol Hill).
Birthday dinner recs for a seattle newbie
Just moved to Seattle from Brooklyn and so far am a little homesick in terms of good, casual dining. My husband's birthday is this weekend and I'd like rec's on a good restaurant.
Looking for something New American and/or particularly Northwest (fresh seafood, etc.) Relaxed atmosphere, but still lively, maybe something with a bar. Moderately priced, not too expensive. Somewhere you can linger over your glass of wine and take your time on dessert.
Our favorite place in nyc was a casual, boisterous Italian restaurant that had great pastas, an inexpensive wine list, sidewalk dining and was open late.
(Please don't post just to tell me to search other threads, as I have already done some of that, and Chowhound has just about the worst search feature ever. If you don't want to recommend, keep your comments to yourself.)
Also, bonus to anyone who can recommend a good bar for after dinner.
Aussie Meat Pies in Seattle?
Does anyone know a good place to get Aussie pub fare in Seattle? I've relocated from NYC and am looking to replace my favorite gastropub (Sheep Station in Park Slope), specifically their amazing meat pie. Any ideas?
Info on Hillery's on Toulouse?
I was wondering if anyone knew anything about Hillery's on Toulouse, the restaurant housed in the Hotel St. Marie. It has been three years since I've been and can't find anything online about it. Is it still going? The chef and his wife, Ed and Hillery Moise, were magnificent in our 2006 wedding at the hotel. I'll be sad if they are no longer there...
Bakeries/Pies in Brooklyn
Two Red Hens is now Ladybird Bakery on 8th Ave. between 11th and 12th. Same owner and baker, just a name change. The French Apple tart is delicious, as is the Raspberry Pear.
Little D's Eatery
i like little D, too, but i wish their menu was a little more varied. i've only been twice this winter, and already I was tired of the same choices. the food is always wonderful, however, and the service very good.
savannah eats
I ate at Savannah Bistro on my honeymoon 3 years ago, and the red snapper I had is still, to this day, one of the best meals I have ever eaten! Don't miss this spot!
Appalachicola/St George Island eats
This is probably too late--but anyone searching "Apalachicola bay" might benefit. The best--and I mean, very best--oysters I've ever eaten were at Papa's Joe's in Apalachicola. It's a locals place, right on the Bay, with a nice deck and the freshest seafood ever. Still, even now, my heart dies a little when thinking about those lazy days of summer when I was attending Florida State, my boyfriend and I would drive down to St. George and spend all day at the beach, then come back to Papa Joe's for the cold, fresh oysters that tasted like the best part of the ocean. The seafood was topnotch, cooked fresh to order, and the atmosphere was just a bunch of beach bums with sand on their feet. The deck butts up to the dock so many of the patrons come in right off their boats.
Highly recommended!
CURRENT Tallahassee restaurants
Is the Main Ingredient still in business? When I lived in Talla. 3 years ago it was my favorite place to go. The special dishes were always delicious and inventive. I also liked sitting outside.
Jacksonville Beach Lobster Rolls--A La Carte
There's a hidden gem in Jacksonville Beach--a cute little gift shop/lunch place that serves New England style lobster rolls and clams. A La Carte. The bread is delicious--soft and buttery, just the way it should be. The prices are a little steep, but well worth it.
Key West Recommendations For Long Weekend
I'm still dreaming about the fish sandwich I had at B.O.'s Fish Wagon. So delicious--the fish is cut thin and fried, on soft bread. You will never have another fish sandwich this good. I have to stop writing about it or I'll be planning another Key West vacation.
New Orleans fare in Park Slope?
Now that NoNo Kitchen has shut its doors :( does anyone know of a good substitute? I miss gumbo and po'boys! And my husband can't go for much longer without jambalaya...
(Does anyone know the reason for NoNo's demise? The food was always stellar. The atmosphere needed a little work...but still, I had hoped they would be around a lot longer.)
Fish tacos in Park Slope?
Rachel's la Taqueria (on 5th ave. at 7th st.) has a pretty decent fish taco. Their Del Mar burrito (shrimp) is fantastic--I was missing out for too long before I tried it.
But the best fish taco I've ever had in Brooklyn was in Red Hook at Hope and Anchor--tasty!
Pulled Pork Basket at NoNo Kitchen
Unfortunately, I had been avoiding NoNo Kitchen for a while because honestly, something about that block on 7th Avenue is just unappetizing. Is it just me or is there a trash tornado always sifting around? Anyway, finally went in the other day and am so glad I did. The first time there I was eyeing the Pulled Pork sandwich, but went for the Southern Fried Chicken instead, which was fantastic--I even brought home the leftovers (which were ample, the plate comes FULL) and split them with my husband for dinner the next day (still good.) We also ordered the crispy pork and apple chip appetizer, which was one of the best things we had. The next time I did order the Pulled Pork and it's a fantastic deal for $10--includes fries and cole slaw. My husband and I even ordered it for delivery a couple days later. The pork is tender and the BBQ sauce is excellent. Also, their gumbo is good.
