Where to buy: Tart Rings/Cake rings in in Calgary/Edmonton/Red Deer

fair enough, that being said I always bought cake rings from Golda's Kitchen (great prices and no cross-border monkey business) and tart rings from JB Prince (very good service and they're used to shipping to Canada).
happy baking!

I like that the reason it's not Korean enough is that you've had all the dishes at Korean restaurants before!

I noticed a thread on this place from a while back, but nobody talked about the food! Thought I'd start a new discussion.

Korean "tapas" spot open since December, in the little house on the west end of downtown that keeps changing hands. It was a coffee house for a while, before that it was a martini bar. Surrounded by vacant lots and new condos, it's not in the most vibrant of areas.

Okay, the skinny is, I've been to this place pretty much EVERY NIGHT for the last week and it just keeps getting better. Open late, cool space, delicious food and nice owners/staff. The food is downright addictive. Highlights include calamari with kaffir lime aioli, a kimchee and pork belly soup that I can't stop ordering, and rice noodles with sweet chili glaze (nothing like what you'd expect... just order it!!) and tasty tasty yam fries that demand a second order.

If you're one of those people who looks for late night options, GO THERE. If you aren't, GO THERE. It's awesome

Calgary: Iberico Ham

They had Iberian ham at Janice Beaton a couple of years ago. I haven't been in for a bit so I'm not sure if they're still carrying it.

New Olives Restaurant in Calgary?

Very tasty, I sampled everything on the appie menu. Standouts included the mushroom flatbread, the gazpacho with tuna tartare, and the beet and fennel salad.
Very enthusiastic service.

Nandos in the NE

I've gotta join in on the "I-Love-Nando's" parade. Cheap, grilled, spicy good chicken. Authentic Portuguese? Not really. Delicious? Absolutely. Avoid the processed breast meat in the salads and sandwiches and go for the kebabs or chicken pieces. Avoid most of the sides as well except for a reasonable seasoned rice, and a FANTASTIC (for a QSR) garden salad full of almonds, flax and tasty veggies.
Best thing? Spicy is actually spicy.

Savour - Calgary

I've spoken with them a couple of times. Two ladies who seem quite passionate and excited about their new business venture. Apart from that, I'm waiting for them to open just like everyone else.

Savour - Calgary

They took the place of Arts on Atlantic, which moved up the street into the space of a former antique shop. My understanding is that their focus is more on specialty tools, kitchenware and houseware than food... a little bit more "cookbook company". I've been told they're friendly with the Bite folks and that there's no animosity. Personally, I just see it as another food-oriented business coming to Inglewood. You would hope the owners would be savvy enough not to compete with Bite but compliment it.

Late Night Izakaya Calgary

I went to a new Izakaya last night just off 16th Ave NE next to bubblemania.
It's open late... proper late, til 1a.m. on weekdays, til 2a.m. Friday and Saturday, and til 11 on Sunday.
Late night Japanese in Calgary, finally!!!!
We enjoyed some sushi, udon, beef tataki, sunomono with ebi and a light dessert.
Everything ranged from good to very good, with standouts being the tataki and a very tasty dashi served with the udon.
A good selection of bevs was offered, including a very respectable sake list.
I was so pleased to discover this place, they're having their official grand opening tomorrow. All those who've been craving more late night options, I encourage you to check this place out.

good Calgary bakeries

Charlie's was purchased by Red Tree Kitchen. They are planning to install some variation on their MardaLoop location in the Charlie's space. Muse is still going strong, not sure where they're getting their bread from though.

Calgary Herald [moved from W. Canada board]

I've worked in a ton of $$$ restaurants and every single one both knew JG AND would ensure that he recieved the very best food and service. (Manager/Chef visits the table, extra love in the kitchen). It's not that the plebes got worse, it was just that knowing who he was, he always got a little extra attention. I'm certain his average dining experience is not representative of the typical fare of the places he dines.

Groceries In Maui

I'm a personal chef for a family who are going to be vacationing in Maui. Where can I go to find great ingredients? I've seen mention of a Safeway in Lahaina, but there must be some great little shops or even stands here and there? Any favorite places would be appreciated!
