New restaurant gift certificate

Thank you for your suggestions. The further I look the more complicated it becomes. If we lived there it would be a lot easier.I'm now leaning toward a gift card for the Ethan Stowell restaurants this way they have a couple to choose from. It's also easy to buy a gift card online. What do you think? Is it a good or bad choice?

New restaurant gift certificate

Nothing too formal (suit and tie),adventurous eaters.I would like to spend about $100.00.Anywhere in Seattle proper.Preferably a newly opened restaurant.

Salt lake city eats.

My brother is visiting his son and daughter-in-law in Salt Lake.He asked me to find a couple of good restaurants for lunch and dinner.I haven't been to salt lake city in years so I've called out to fellow Chowhounds for help. They aren't very adventurous eaters and like comfortable local places. Please no chains.
Thanks, Paul

Help!!! Need a Restaurant Recommendation near the Congress Theater (Milwaukee and Armitage)

Wow! UB over just about any restaurant in the city? I wish I felt that way about a single restaurant. It sure would make going out to dinner a easy decision.lol

Help!!! Need a Restaurant Recommendation near the Congress Theater (Milwaukee and Armitage)

The area around the Congress is a little sketchy as far as dinner before a show goes. The good news is you aren't far at all from tons of places. If your staying downtown take the blue line train to Damen ave. or cab it to Milwaukee ave. and Damen ave.The Congress is the next stop at Western ave. on the blue line or less than a five minute cab ride from Milwaukee and Damen. You can walk from there if you wish. It's about a mile.Sometimes your better off walking some of that food off.If you know what I mean.Go to Lillie Q if you want BBQ (shrimp and grits, fried chicken.Yum!)you won't be disappointed.Either way it's a fun area to go for dinner before the show and lots of places to go after the show also.

Grill Rental for Pig Roast

My friend rented a large charcoal grill for a party.I'll see if I can get the info for you.How long is a 100LB pig?The reason I'm asking weber makes a huge kettle grill I think is 40" round.I always thought it would cook a small hog wonderful. The same guy that rented the grill has one.it cost about a grand though.

Mr. Taco

Mr. Taco was the first "Mexican" restaurant in the Cicero and Berwyn area besides Pepe's.It was a late night staple for many of us after a night of partying. Many local people in the area still eat there.I remember once the health department closed them down and people were waiting outside for them to reopen. Mr.Taco introduced many people in Berwyn and Cicero to mexican food.I haven't been there in years but it sure cured the late night munchies at the time.

Heaven on Seven Report

I think if you went to the HOS on Wabash you'd even be happier with the food. The last lunch I had there knocked my socks off! The food seems to be better in the original restaurant. They had a tamale special and I was lucky to get the last one. They were outstanding as well the other dishes our table ordered.

Chicago Food Trip-Do I Have It Right?

Ah! The old pizza controversy again. You can't go wrong with either of these spots. The pizza is going to be good. You'll go home happy and full.Probably too full! We need to post where not to go instead of where to go.I travel for months at a time to different place for work. One of the first things I do is get a pizza when I get home.No place does it like Chicago.Enough said.Let's argue about bbq now! lol

Road trip to Chicago (again) looking for some help this time.

If you are in your late twenties give Piece a chance.Good pie, good beer and a young hipster crowd.I think you'll like it.Rick Neilsen from Cheap trick is one of the owners. You can also take the blue line train to Damen and Piece is about a block from the stop. You can hit all the bars and don't have to worry about driving. There is music, clubs and lots of younger crowd spots in this wicker park area. Four blocks south is Division St. lots of the same there. If I was still in my late twenties I wouldn't miss this area. I live a block from there if you want I'll give you a parking pass on the house.

What is meant by New York pizza....and does it exist in Chicago as I recall it?

I don't know about how accurate the tribune polls are. After all a childhood friend is a tribune sports writer and he couldn't run to first base without tripping over his own feet.Growing up in the city and burbs most people I know go for the thin crust. We had four different types of pizza in a mile radius growing up. We had Salerno's on 16th,it was a thicker pizza.Freddie's on 16th, bakery style pizza.Al's on 22nd,thin crust.Benny's on 26th, not thick not thin. They were all different and good in their own ways.Everyone still seemed to like the thinner style.Deep dish really wasn't around until Giordano's started branching out.We used go to My TT on Clark in the late 70's for deep dish. I don't know if it was that good or because they served us beer.It was pretty crappy the last time i had it.We never got the "Chicago Style" thing?

Vegetarian Muffuletta

Oh! This is so very wrong. Just put the olive mix and cheese on roll and don't call it a muffuletta. It's all about the meats, cheese and muffuletta mix and bun that gives it the flavor. It just won't taste the same. Sorry our vegetarian friends.Us carnivores wouldn't ask how to make a vegetarian dish with meat and expect to get the same flavor. LOL! You can get some good muffuletta buns at Labriolla bakery in Oak Brook but call ahead and order for the next day.

reasonable priced meat market

I'm looking for a good quality meat market or butcher shop with reasonable prices. There has to be a alternative to places like Paulina Meat Market. The last time I bought stuff to feed a large group from there for a few dollars more I could have taken them out to eat .Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks Chowhounders and Happy Holidays

Dinner near Congress Theater -- HELP!!

Try 90 Mile Cafe on Armitage just west of Milwaukee. Pretty good Cuban food reasonable prices too. Fun, Casual atmosphere and clean. Stopped there for lunch about a week ago service was good and our sandwiches were delicious. Nice replacement for the nasty bbq joint that was there previous.

Need cuban restaurant that offers catering

Try Papi's on Milwaukee ave. just north of Belmont. They are a small and relatively new restaurant. They have great cubans and other authentic dishes.I believe they cater also. The address is 3334 N, Milwaukee phone# 773-777-3300. Also cafe Laguardia on Armitage has always been good .

Two months in Ann Arbor [moved from Chicago]

Is there any must have places to eat in the Ann Arbor,Michigan area?I'm working in the area for two months and need some good spots to eat.

Eating it all in Chicago...but where?

I agree with rubinow on Smoke Daddy at least you'll be entertained. They have live blues playing most nights.Haven't been there since they have changed management. That might be a good thing. You'll have to let us know what you think about the food. It's a short walk from our house and in a hopping neighborhood.Take the blue line to Division and head west a couple blocks to Wood St. it's on the north side of Division you can't miss it.When you get done eating walk it off.Head west to Damen ave. then head north to Milwaukee.North and Damen. There is a blue line train stop there or take Milwaukee back to division. There are tons of shops, restaurants, bars and clubs along the way and lots of people watching too.If your up for walking head north on Damen and hit Miko's Italian ice for desert. It's maybe 4 of 5 blocks up from North avenue. Even better is Margie's Ice Cream take Milwaukee northwest to Western ave. turn right to Armitage ave. 1/2 block. Have a big old school sundae you won't be disappointed. There is a blue line stop at Western also. Have fun and eat well.

Eating it all in Chicago...but where?

Chicago isn't a great bbq town.I haven't had much luck at Fat Willy's.I'd skip Fat Willy's rather than gamble. It's hard to find consistently good bbq in the city. It's more of a personal preference.Personally I go to Leon's on Ashland and Fullerton for tips.It seems to be the most consistent to my liking. To get the goods you got to go to the hoods.South side and West side.People tend to stay away from these bbq places because of the neighborhoods. But I find the people are generally nice and it's worth it to get good bbq.My wife and I have taken trips to K.C. and Memphis just to eat bbq.I don't know what's so hard about it and why I've been so disappointed with so many places I've tried. I can't figure it out.I can make killer bbq on my weber. All it takes is some good wood and a little love and patience and your eating good. Low and slow.....

Chicago baseball trip

There are too many options to list.Lots of pub food on Clark St. to and from the park.Stop in Sluggers or other bars around the park for before and after game food and drink. On game day don't let your ball cap get in the way of eating good. The nearby establishments will let you in hat or not. They want the business. There is a Bar Louie right near the park on Clark.Try the buffalo calamari with a cold beer it's the bomb.

Chow at Sox Park?

I'd go for the beef with hot giardiniera. Wet of course. Hot dogs are really a personal choice.I'd try the Vienna beef hot dog vs best Kosher. Go for the Polish instead or share one of each. That's always the best way to sample food.

Chow at Sox Park?

There are more choices than listed in the link. All the food I've had has been pretty decent. The Maxwell street style polish sandwich is enticing with the smell of onions lofting in the air. Usually my wife runs for the food and I watch the game. She always comes back with something different.

Fresh fava beans?

I saw fresh fava beans today at a produce market in Glendale Heights. I had to run out to the west burbs today and saw a huge produce market and had to stop in.They had fava beans in the pods. The name of the market was Valli Produce 155 E. North ave. Glendale Heights.630-682-5200 it's a huge store with good selection of fruits and vegetables. It's funny they had everything you could think of except green beans in which I had a taste for.

5 Canadian Girls Gone Wild in Chicago

Girls definitely head to Wicker Park lots of good restaurants, bars and clubs.Fun, eclectic and hip neighborhood to walk around and lots of partying.Things hop until 5am on the weekends. All sorts of different places to drink ,eat and shop. Just hop in a cab and tell them you want to go to Milwaukee and Damen or Division and Damen. You can also take the Blue line to Damen for two bucks. To me this sounds like the place your looking for. There are many places in our city to eat ,drink and shop.Have fun! Checkout Clark st. near Wrigley Field late night also

Been to Smoke Daddy, Love it! Who's got the best BBQ in town?

Haven't been to smokedaddy since the new management. I heard it the food has changed for the better since it was hard to get any worse. The last time I ate there it was terrible but being a bbq lover I might try it again. I cook great smokey bbq at home on my weber and it's hard to beat. And quite seriously all the local joints can't touch it. Honey 1 got good reviews but I found it to be just average. My favorite place is a little joint in Maywood called Hillary and Cooks on 17th ave. a few blocks north of the eisenhower express way. It's carryout only and if you blink you'll miss it. Real old school bbq smokey and a sauce that makes your mouth water and cheap too. The last time I was there 20 bucks got me a large tip and a full slab. Great ribs and tips straight forward nothing fancy. It's a place I use as a reference to judge bbq by and just talking about it makes me want to jump in the car and get some.
