Roli Roti roasted pig knuckle?

I bought one recently the Wednesday Civic Center farmers market. I took it home, chopped off the meat and chopped it further and ate with some tortillas similar to taqueria taco.

Nopa-alternatives in Western Addiiton or Laurel Village?

Ragazza seems like perfect place - Divisadero at Page

Friday night Persian dinners at Middle East Market (Berkeley)

Not sure where I could recommend getting this out as typically my mother or father prepare it at home. That said, seems like most Persian restaurants are flogging the kababs as the main attraction, and some do them pretty well. Favorites include Shalizaar and Chelokababi in Sunnyvale.

Ghormeh sabzi is almost exclusively made with lamb - maybe even the shank portion or other similar cuts that are suitable for stewing. Dried limes and fenugreek can give this dish a sour characteristic for which some may not be familiar.

R & G Lounge - what to get??

Folks coming to town tomorrow and my father has been wanting to go to R & G Lounge. I have been several times for lunch and generally have the dried scallop and egg white fried rice.

What are the items that one must try at this restaurant? We will be party of 5 - 3 adults and 2 kids - going early as well.

Recommendations?

Great lunch outside in SF right now

Next time you have car, opportunity and weather cooperates, I highly recommend Piccino in Dogpatch. Excellent pizza, outdoor seating underneath trees. If not do not have car, can take the Muni line out there and get off at 22nd Street @ 3rd.

San Jose - Original Joe's

Cartoon Italian is good description, or south bay Italian - either are accurate descriptions. Some of the grilled meats are okay, the grilled lamb chops or I had half grilled chicken which was done reasonably well - nothing special, salt and pepper and grilled - squeeze lemon over top and cannot go too wrong.

San Jose - Original Joe's

This is a pretty accurate description. I had to be in downtown SJ a couple of weeks ago for lunch and thought it the easiest place to go. They do what they do, do it reasonably well, nothing over the top good but solid old school fare. Grilled lamb chops are pretty good as I recall. Raviolis solid. Loud atmosphere, may have to wait if go at wrong time.

Farmers Markets - Live Chickens

Thanks, perhaps the words selection process was better way of conveying the question that I am asking as well. Thanks.

Farmers Markets - Live Chickens

Seems likely - thanks again.

Farmers Markets - Live Chickens

Fair enough, will go find one sometime and have it freshly killed and will prepare it and report back. Thanks for all your input.

Farmers Markets - Live Chickens

Perhaps you're right, but thats why I am inquiring, because I don't know about these chickens.

Farmers Markets - Live Chickens

Guys, I would venture a guess that I have cooked more chickens than 98% of the people on here. Furthermore, I do know quite a bit about the difference between air chilled chickens, natural chickens, free range chickens, organically fed chickens, heritage birds and Foster Farms chickens.

My real question is about the story of these chickens. They are obviously not "freshly killed" as they are purchased live. I suppose they could be "freshly killed" if the slaughter were performed at home. They are obviously not air chilled as they are alive when purchased.

Obviously, they are going to be more fresh than anything else. Nevertheless, if not a good quality chicken, well fed and raised, freshness doesn't really matter, right? A poorly raised and fed but fresh chicken is still worse than a well raised and well-fed bird that may have been slaughtered 3 days ago, right?

Farmers Markets - Live Chickens

Okay, fair enough. No, I haven't bought a chicken at Safeway in the past several years. Then again, haven't slaughtered my own bird either. So now that we've established that

Regarding freshly killed chickens, I have not noticed that several places advertise "freshly killed" chickens. I purchase many chickens at New May Wah in the Richmond, and never really thought they were just slaughtered in the back. In fact, since they are listed as Vikon Farms chickens, I have done a bit of research on the chickens.

so I'll go back to my original question, does anybody know the background of these chickens - are they any better, taste, how are they raised, quality that the chickens you may be purchasing at Safeway?

Farmers Markets - Live Chickens

I've obviously seen them dropped into a regular brown paper bag, but are they any better than a decent quality store bought bird? I can imagine any number of ways to slaughter the bird, but its not like we live in the country here. Are they any more fresh? Just curious to know more.

Farmers Markets - Live Chickens

Been to the Allemany markets on several occasions and lately been frequenting the Civic Center Farmers Market. I have seen plenty of live chickens being sold off to the sides. What is the story here? What kind of chickens are they using? Are the people purchasing these chickens typically bringing them home, slaughtering themselves and cooking? I spoke with one customer today who indicated that he was going to freeze one which seemed self-defeating since the entire purpose was to have them fresh. How are these chickens being slaughtered in this environment (not a farm), whats the size, anybody had them and any good? Please advise.

Financial District Weekend Lunch Options?

I work in the financial district as well. Choices in the area are lousy - weekend or weekday in my opinion. Sounds like should buck up and walk over to Cane Rosso at the Ferry Bldg.

Lunch - Downtown San Jose

I generally think of downtown San Jose as a culinary wasteland. Nevertheless, am going to be there for lunch later this week and hoping for any recommendation of chow-worthy food. Not looking for fast food or quick and dirty, but worthy of a good sit down lunch. Any recs?

Tropisueno--Happy Hour and Fish Tacos

AM a big fan of Tropisueno for lunch and had one good dinner there. Very clean, fresh tasting Mexican taqueria style food at lunch and more traditional at dinner. Tequila selection at dinner time is outstanding as well. Highly recommended for weekday lunch but go a little early to avoid long line.

calimari !

Follow this recipe from Mark Bittman of NY Times. Generally speaking, I am underwhelmed with his cooking, but this one is good and simple. I used grapeseed oil as thats what I had around and is good for frying. Just dusted with regular all purpose flour. One real key is to dry the calamari as well as possible before coating.

Favorite Quinoa Recipes

This is interesting. I purchase mine from the bulk section at Whole Foods. While I do rinse, the water always seems run clear. So you put the rinsed and slightly wet quinoa into a non-stick pan to toast - even while it is wet? Am going to try this weekend.

Favorite Quinoa Recipes

This is interesting as I have always contemplated toasting them in a pan before boiling. Only problem I had with this preparation was that one should always rinse the quinoa to prior to beginning to cook so I thought it could be tough to rinse and then drop into dry skillet. Otherwise, I like the idea.

Tavern on the Green coming to the Metreon

Hmmm, perhaps I am missing something. Do you mean the newer "farmer's market" or the indoor foot court with Buckhorn, etc? My current favorite chow right there is across the street at Tropisuena Mexican.

Favorite Quinoa Recipes

I make my quinoa with water or chicken stock for additional flavor. Once cooked, dump it into another large mixing bowl and continue to fluff it up for a while to release much of the trapped condensation underneath. This will remove the gummy characteristic that can develop. I then toss it with a bunch of arugula and maybe some sliced scallions. Dress it with a olive oil and lemon juice "vinaigrette" and sure winner.

Purchase it at Whole Foods or elsewhere in the bulk foods section - little over $3/lb.

Tavern on the Green coming to the Metreon

Tavern on the Green was never going to revive the Metreon. Frankly, there was nothing to revive as the place has struggled ever since its opening during the dot com days. Furthermore, this city does not seem too conducive or accommodating to these large institutional restaurants.

Party Venue - SF Only

Yes, I just know my crowd would go for the duration. I was also thinking about something like Koko Cocktails on Geary as a potential place. Not sure if they would do it but going to check it out.

Regarding food, that seems like a good idea - something that can be finger foodish without being too messy is ideal.

Party Venue - SF Only

Thanks, this are all good enough but seem likely purely dining places whereas I may be seeking more of a just cocktail party venue.

Party Venue - SF Only

This sounds like about exactly what I would be seeking. I'll look into this a bit further. I imagine I could also keep the room for the duration of the evening rather than heading to the Library. Just curious, but what kind of food did you bring into the place?

Gilroy: anything good?

For cheap eats or taco trucks - absolutely, they can be found in many places. I suppose my point is that in going to places as mentioned above, that is what I am going to seek out since seems to make sense.

Gilroy: anything good?

I am not from Gilroy but know a little bit about the area. The population is probably a good bit of south bay commuters who probably don't go out a whole lot after a hellish commute. When travelling to places like Gilroy - I always find it best to do something like visit a local taco truck or inexpensive Mexican restaurant that may cater to locals rather than seek a higher end restaurant.

In fact, it wasn't that long ago that the entire south bay was largely considered a culinary wasteland.
