MOTHERS DAY BRUNCH / SUGGESTIONS NEEDED
We are looking for a nice brunch to accomodate about 10 of us. We will be coming from the East Bay, South Bay, and Stockton area. We are looking for something that will be somewhat in-between. Our Mother is in her 80's, and we would like to treat her to something special. Can anyone make some suggestions?. Maybe somewhere around Dubllin or Castro Valley? Thanks so much.
Fresh cracked crab [moved from San Francisco Bay Area board]
Is finally here !! How do you like to serve yours? And what do you serve it with? Just trying to get some new ideas here. Do you prefer to roast it? Or serve it chilled over ice? Thanks for the new ideas.
Where to take the graduate?
Thanks everyone for all the suggestions. She did mention the C Level, thought it would be less expensive than Island Prime, problem there is that
C Level doesn't take reservations.....anyone know if the wait would be terribly long on a late sunday afternoon/early evening? Funny, one of her first jobs in SD was at the Bali Hai as the hostess!

Where to take the graduate?
I told her the choice was her's to make. Since there are 8 of us, I suggested price range to be around $25 to $30 each. Being young, I would think she would like some sort of "fun" atomosphe? Something with a view? I don't know San Diego well enough to know what is out there. But since it is granuation, I would think she would like to go someplace more fancy than what is around PB.
Where to take the graduate?
Our daughter will be graduating late May from SDSU. The family (there will be about 8 of us) would like to take her somewhere special for a late lunch, early dinner (we know she will want to be out with friends later). She currently lives in Pacific Beach. We know nothing of the area, and she doens't know where she would like to go. She doesn't eat much meat, but we all do! Would like to get a reservation in early. Any suggestions? Thanks for the help
Where are the best casual places that the locals just *LOVE*
Hi there. We are making a first trip to NO. (Was supposed to go 3 days after Katrina). We will probably go to one or two of the "old line" restaurants. But what we really like are the sort of places that you go to "grab a bit". A place to sit with the locals and hear their Katrina stories. Homey, comfortable, down home good food type of places. Gosh! Can you tell we don't want to dress up! We will be staying in the quarter, but can "cab it" if worth it.
Suggestions Please for dinner in Cupertino
Thanks! What kind of resturant is Cafe Torre? Any others in the neighborhood of the Flint center that are interesting with good food?
Suggestions Please for dinner in Cupertino
We will be attending a venue at the Flint Center at the De Anza College this Thur. evening. We would like to treat our friends (who are treating us) to the venue with a nice dinner beforehand. Can anyone make recommendations for a nice place the is close to the Flint Center? Don't know the area at all, and don't want to make a bad choice.
Thanks
Palo Alto Hot Spots-What did I miss?
Wow, thanks for all the suggestions! She is not a "party type" of gal. She enjoys a good night out with friends for dinner and drinks. She is coming down to vist family and celebrate her birthday. She is then off to Hawaii. What is Lavanda and Vero? Will have to do a search Thanks again for all the help! It's just why I love this board.
Palo Alto Hot Spots-What did I miss?
Greetings fellow chowhounders! Our daughter will be turning 23 and we are taking her to dinner. She is currently at school in Davis, and would like to eat at a PA "hot spot".
From the various reviews on the board these look to be the "hot spots": Tamerine Junoon Mantra Osteria Palo Alto Sol Three Seasons Evvia Y Tapas . Did I miss anything here? Are there other "hot spots?" Opinions please.
Best Cheap Eats located Mid-Peninsula
Hello fellow chowhounds. We live in RWC and would like to know others opinions on the best cheap eats located in the mid peninsula area. We like all kinds of food...(and as a chowhound, who doesn't?) Would like to know of places from Millbrae to Palo Alto. Thanks, chowhounds!
PS We like "Al's fish and chips in RWC, and "Little Biscuit" in San Mateo
Affordable, fun resturant in North Beach for.....
two young college kids want to have a fun night in SF. They said they wanted to go to North Beach. Are there any other areas in SF that cater to a young crowd on a Sat. night? Mind you, these two people are young, in love, and ....broke. Sorry, I live in the So. Bay and not to familar with the city. Thanks Chowhounds!
Coffee Cake
Your marizipan coffee cake sounds different...care to post the receipe? Always like to try different things Thanks
What exactly is a "rump" roast??
I know that some cuts of meat have multiple names...depending on where you live in the country. What is "rump" Is it chuck, tenderloin? Anyone know? Thanks
Looking to impress at a potluck
Thanks for such a quick answer...one more question...does the filling "overflow" over the pastry as it's bakes in the oven? Does it end up looking "messy", or does it look like a pretty braid with filling? Sorry about all the questions! God...don't ya just love this board?
Looking to impress at a potluck
Procrastibaker....This sounds very good. What brand of the pastry sheets do you buy? Are they hard to find in "sheets". Are you refering to "filo dough"? How many people would the receipe feed?
Looking to impress at a potluck
We are having an office pot luck this friday. Would like to try something different that is sure to please! What is your *favorite* pot luck item to bring? Thanks for the ideas!
Question: Can roasted brussel sprouts be tossed with a light vinegrette after roasting?
I did it! Emerile's Sherry Maple Vinegrette on top of the Ina Gardens roasted sprouts These were a keeper...everyone gobbled them up. No left overs whatsoever!
18 lb ready to roast. How high, and for how long?
I know the turkey will take about 4 hours to cook...some have recommeded roasting at a very high hear first...and after a bit turn down the heat and roast at the usual 325. How long do you roast at hight heat? How high? How long? Thanks
Turkey Gravy 101 What's Best? Roux or Flour/Water Mix
Seems many on the board make a roux to thicken gravy. In the past I have mix flour and broth/water together, and then added to hot pan dripping that have been deglazed with additional broth. Is there a "best way". Thanks Chowhounds....and "Happy Thanksgiving"!!
Breast up or down?
I have never done a bird "upside down". Isn't it kind of ackward to flip a 20 lb bird? Espcially if it's hot?
Make ahead: Green bean casserole/smoke chile scallopped sweet potatoes?
I just made the Bobby Flay Chili smoked sweet potatoes today. Is it the one that is scalloped potatoes baked in heavy cream that has been flavored with a "mashed" chipole pepper with a bit of the sauce? If so.....you have to let the cassorole cook for a long time. First half hour covered, then an additional hour uncovered. I let it cook even "longer" so the cream would "thicken up" It tastes wonderful for such a simple recipe! It will look "runny and thin" for a long time. But an additional half hour to 45 minutes seemed to do the trick.
Question: Can roasted brussel sprouts be tossed with a light vinegrette after roasting?
First timer for making roasted sprouts due to the advice from this board. Emeril has a wonderful vinegrette made with maple syrup and sherry vinegar and some other ingredents. He puts this on steamed sprouts...would it be ok on roasted sprouts?
Thanks for the advice!!
Favorite Green Vege to serve with TG Dinner
Looking to serve a vege...maybe roasted brussel sprouts. But got to wondering what other favor. PLEASE NO GREEN BEEN CASSEROLES! Since I have never fixed "roasted sprouts"...are they to dry? Can you toss them in some sort of sauce afterward?
Brussell Sprouts..Which is better? Roast vs Saute
Well, roasting certainly seems to be the way to go! Question: can it be done ahead of time? And then micowaved before being set on the table?
How much olive oil? What other seasoning makes it taste so fantastic? What is the oven temp? How long to roast?
I know it's a lot of questions (sorry) but this board is just so helpful!!!
Brussell Sprouts..Which is better? Roast vs Saute
I have been trying to decide how to serve this vege on Thanksgiving Day. I will have a big 20 lb'er in the oven...so maybe roasting is not the way to go. Or, can they be roasted *ahead of time*, early in the day...and then quickly reheated somehow? Which method do you prefer? Preping early...store in a zip loc in the fridge, and saute just before serving? What do you all think?
Sweet Potatoes for someone who doesn't want them "to sweet"
I have the assignment of the sweet potatoes. But, the person who requested them states "please don't put the marshmellos on". Who can blame her. She prefers them mashed and "a little butter and salt". Being Thanksgiving....surely "something" else can be added for more flavor without going overboard on the "sweetness". Any ideas? How do you fix them ?
Best Tasting Appetizer that is ......
Store Bought!!! Yes, shame on me, but I have a crowd coming for the holiday, and I'm looking to take some stess off. If you can't cook, and you like to do things right, what store bought appetizer is your favorite to serve? I'm looking for simple but tasty here....
