babbo or convivio for birthday dinner?

hello, i have a reservation for both restaurants for tomorrow for my husband's birthday, and i'm trying to choose which place to go.

babbo- we have been about two years ago, but sat in the bar. we live in the village and the 'neighbor' element appeals, although our reservation is at 10 pm (not a deal breaker, but not ideal)

convivio- i have heard good things, reservation is a more tenable 9 pm. going to midtown is a slight drag, and i'm concerned that it will feel stuffy.

main objective is to fill up on amazing pasta in a nice setting. any thoughts? thank you!

Wedding food at Central Park Boathouse

I originally started this post over a year ago, and ended up having my wedding at the Boathouse in the beginning of August. Because I know how stressful it is to select a venue, I wanted to report on my experience to give some people more information. I am happy to report that, in all honesty, the food was amazing and exceeded our expectations. My husband and I go to A LOT of weddings, and the food at ours was some of the best that we've had. Including all of the weddings we have gone to at Abigal Kirsch locations which, at one time, had seduced me with their shiny marketing photots of the food there.
My opinion on the food is based on 1) the innovative menu and the willingness of the kitchen to change things as we requested 2) our experience both at our tasting and at the wedding itseld 3) the feedback of our guests and our vendors.
To meinNYC, I do NOT believe that my opinion is based on the money I spent (which, by the way, is remarkably and relatively affordable compared to other places in Manhattan). If I did not feel that we had gotten good quality, I would be the first to caution other couples about spending their money here. I would also say that, at a charity event, corners are cut and it may not be the best representation of a kitchen.
We had guests who tipped the waiters for exceptional service (of course totally superfluous and unnecessary, but it was nice to know they were so pleased), guests who asked the matrie'd for the recipes of things they had eaten, and guests who asked for seconds. All I can say is that all that worry was for naught.

Cute, date restaurant - no reservations needed

hearth is pretty pricey for a date nite (as opposed to special occassion date). id try pia dina or po.

Wolfgang's Steak- Park Ave or Greenwich?

we had awful AWFUL service at the one on park ave. had to wait over an hour for a reservation that had been made a month earlier. host said other people had been sat because they were willing to 'compensate him for the busy nite'. we told the bartender who agreed the host was miserable and gave us a free round of drinks to try to apologize

scarpetta or sfoglia?

deciding between the two for a special birthday dinner (currently have reservations at both for a tuesday evening) with my fiance. we have been lucky to eat at many fabulous restaurants- our favorites are often those with the warmest staff (annisa, po). that said, i want the food to be awesome, too. which do you recommend?

Wedding food at Central Park Boathouse

Hello- I'm trying to get some definitive opinions on recent experiences with the food at Boathouse weddings. I've read mixes reviews online, and it's holding me back from booking my wedding there for next summer. I'm considering a sit down multi-course dinner.
Has anyone been in the past year or two to a large event there? I'm having frightening visions of cruise buffet-quality food.
Thank you!

Momofuko menu change - livid!

this is just the way the restaurant works. a while back they took the dumplings off of the original momofuko menu, everyone was sad, and they never came back. in another note, per the reader below questioning whether a certain employee at ssam was david chang, i must say that i have been to both the original and ssam at least 15 times over the past 3 years, and i have NEVER seen him in the kitchen or anywhere on the premises. has anyone?!

Expectations of food costs in Italy

I am hoping to plan a trip in October to Rome, Florence, and Italy. I visited as a poor student and was hoping to return again as a (moderately) successful adult who can finally eat in finer restaurants and basically chew my way through the country. The crappy exchange rate, however, is making me worried. Is anyone, who has visited Italy recently, able to give me some insight on what I should expect?

As I reference, my boyfriend and I live in New York City and are accustomed to typically spend $100-$150 when we go out to dinner around here, in popular and well-reviewed restaurants.

Thank you for the feedback!

What's the worst (nice) restaurant you have been to?

i cant believe no one has mentioned wd-50. i left there hungry and poor, and some things were downright nasty. i dont care how foamy or creative they were.
