$ 1.00 oyster happy hour in NYC.....Any such thing??

Also in Brooklyn is Strong Place (Cobble Hill) -- $1 oysters and 2-for-1 draft beers from 4 to 7 weeknights (maybe excluding Fridays?) http://www.strong-place.com/

Soft shell crab sightings?

Watty and Meg (corner of Kane and Court) has been making them. I think they offered a SSC BLT over the weekend.

Malaysian grocery store in Flushing Mall -- still there?

I bought a jar of (Indonesian) kaya but didn't know you're supposed to butter the toast first, so thanks for the tip!

This is what I bought:

Malaysian grocery store in Flushing Mall -- still there?

I will answer my own question! Because I am an intrepid reporter/ace journalist.

Yes, it is still there, and it's called Oldtown Asia Market. I purchased assam and kari laksa base packets and strange snacks galore! Highly recommended.

Now that I can google the name, I found this!

EIT delivers, as always. Very excited to learn that there's a branch in BK, my home borough.

Malaysian grocery store in Flushing Mall -- still there?

Last time I went to the Flushing Mall about 2 years ago, there was a nice Malaysian grocery store there.
Can anyone tell me the name of this store, and if it even still exists? The owner, a Malaysian woman, used to also have a booth in a mini-mall on 8th Ave. in Sunset Park, but that's long gone.
Thank you!

Anyone on right now who can suggest good deli in Carroll Gardens?

Hi missmasala: Mazzat has spectacular falafel and they are open for lunch, at least on weekends. The newish place on Columbia, Fulltummy's, makes truly awful sandwiches to go with their truly awful name...avoid!

Looking for sour sop, tamarind ice creams (tropical ice cream place?)

I believe what you're looking for is Fabio's Tropical Ices in Sunset Park, Brooklyn! This place is great and it has all the flavors you mention and many more, probably around 30 total. It's on 4th Ave. and 50th St. I got a strawberry coconut batida there a few hours ago :)

PS: The sign says "Helado de Coco."

more Brooklyn Fairway disappointment

I love the Red Hook Fairway cheese guy. The trick to is go when they're not slammed. Hang out by the cheese counter and talk to him about what you like, and he'll shower you with delicious samples of cheeses you've never heard of (expensive ones, too). He really listens to your feedback and knows what he's doing -- more than once, the third or fourth bite he's given me was so delicious that I had to buy some.

Hophap Thai on Smith St--any reviews?

Thanks! I used to like the chili basil noodles (pad kee mao) at Joya, but they've gone way downhill in the last few months. Hoping Hophap does them better!

Best burger on Smith or Court Streets?

I know I'm too late to help the original poster, but if anyone else is looking, I love the burgers at Buttermilk Channel.

Surfed around your flickr account a bit ... you are an amazing photographer!!

Best Japanese restaurant in Williamsburg

Agree -- 1 or 8 is delicious and great for a party of your size, too -- it has really nice, big booths.

Someone PLEASE identify this mystery Sripraphai ingredient/dish

But was it delicious?

Where to Buy Sea Urchin/Uni (as ingredient, not @ restaurants)??

Reporting back: So last Saturday, I hit up both Eataly and the Lobster Place at the Chelsea Market. I struck out at both places.

At Eataly, the fish guy (monger?) told me they get sea urchin in usually twice a week but that it sells out quickly. He said if you call ahead and they have some, they'll hold it for you until the end of the day. Pretty nice. They have both Maine and CA -- I'm pretty sure he said that it was the CA was $22 for the tray, not the Maine.

It might be for the best that Lobster Place also was out of urchin trays, because I tried their urchin at the sushi bar in the form of a piece of uni nigiri, and the urchin was on the bitter side and just not very good. I would have been disappointed to wind up with a whole tray of it.

Egg on my face...thanks for the heads up!

Where to Buy Sea Urchin/Uni (as ingredient, not @ restaurants)??

I am looking for a source of sea urchin for home cooking. I don't know how other markets sell it, but at Sunrise Mart and Mitsuwa (Japanese groceries) it comes on a little wooden slab covered in plastic. Problem is, Mistuwa is too far and Sunrise doesn't have it reliably.

Please help, hounds!

We got a car. Where do we go?

Hit up Defonte's for a sandwich in Red Hook if you can, but note that they close early-ish and aren't open on Sundays.

Jive Turkey?

Disclaimer: I don't eat turkey. But I hosted Thanksgiving dinner two years ago for 10 people, and my from-out-of-town father insisted on a Jive turkey (as seen on TV!). I ordered one well in advance and had it shipped, even though I'm in Brooklyn, to avoid the notorious waits and Thanksgiving rush.

I guess I assumed it would have a crispy crust like fried chicken, but it didn't. I don't actually know what fried turkey is supposed to look like, but anyway, this one didn't seem special.

My guests' reactions were that it was just okay and not great. Certainly not worth the money; I think it was around $80, and we got a bird from the bottom of the price tier. I think my father was glad to have satisfied his burning curiosity, but he wouldn't get one again for the price.

But again, I don't eat turkey...there are a lot of older posts on this board about Jive, just do a search for some more informed opinions!

Any & All: Eat-in bakeries, Great beers, Inexpensive & atmospheric - Brooklyn

Hot chocolate = Jacques Torres Chocolate on Water Street in Dumbo. There are 2 options, classic and a version with a hint of chili -- I love the latter, try it at least once!

My suggestion is to go in the early evening, after sundown. After you buy your chocolate, continue down Water Street to Washington, make a left and go into the park there under the Manhattan Bridge. Head out to the edge of the park and sit by the water at the steps they've built facing the Brooklyn Bridge. The view of the bridges and the city lit up at night is gorgeous.

Birthday weekend in New York - help me feel in the gaps

Be prepared to wait at Ippudo...get there 45 minutes or so before you want to eat. There's a bar there to hang out at while you wait for your table.

Cafe luluc -- fresh Smith Street horrors

"encyclopedia of failure" is hilarious.

Brooklyn Egg Creams

Update: it IS so bad! I got a Farmacy egg cream recently and it was TINY. Mega, mega rip-off.

I seriously wanted to like this place so bad!!! Its premise is so appealing. But after my in-store experience with a soda jerk who really was a jerk, and this shameful egg cream, I don't know if I'll be back. Such a waste, it's a gorgeous renovation and a great concept.

Where to get the soup festival tickets for Saturday?

Agreed! It was a festival of salt (and lentils).

Where to get the soup festival tickets for Saturday?

I went to this, but didn't start the crawl until about 2. And at that point, it was already too late -- many places had run out, and I was able to sample only about 5 soups. Very sad, but I'm glad the event was such a success.

Al Di La... Overrated?

I had a great lunch there last week -- the polenta with mushrooms and beet greens was really delicious and something different, not to mention comforting and filling. I was scraping the sides of the bowl. It can be hard to find such well-executed (non-pasta) dishes that also are vegetarian, so I was very happy!

Best Seafood in BoCoCa?

Petite Crevette on Hicks St. by Union. Really delicious, special, affordable place. A neighborhood gem! Try the tuna burger, it's addictive.

Tacos Xochimilco (sunset park)

Just had my first pambazo from Xochimilco. It was vegetarian (most allegedly contain chorizo?) and very good, but could have used more red sauce. I think it would be fairly easy to replicate at home.

R.I.P. The Fairway Lobster Roll

Although this is terrible news, thank you very much for the report. I have been a big fan of the BK Fairway and go there all the time, and I have to say, this really changes the way I perceive the business/store. The warm fuzzy feelings are fading away.
