Where to get European Orange Fanta???

Don't know exactly when this happened, but "Orange" Fanta has finally been released in Canada. Only noticed the labeling change today because I was always used to it being called "Tangerine" for the last 2 years here. Didn't bother paying attention afterwards.

Every time when I'm at Pizza Pizza picking up my order I always grab a can of Tangerine Fanta and only noticed the change in name to "Orange" today.

Brasilian Feijoada Completa

Thanks. I finally stopped my procrastination and visit Segovia's earlier this afternoon to get the take-out Feijoada. The price was $8 plus taxes coming to $9.04 in total. Walked over to the park in Kensington Market and had my lunch outdoors in this great spring weather. My only complaint was the meat portions in my feijoada was very little with mostly rice, black beans and other ingredients in my food order. Hope they aren't that stingy every time on the meat. LOL However, I already know that I'm going to be a "repeat customer" because I don't really know many other places that serve Brazilian Feijoada as take-out.

Looking for good Indian rest. that delivers

Always loved the food at Makkah the several times we ordered food delivery. However, earlier tonight was the very first time I set foot in the restaurant. It's my kind of food joint simple and very spacious at the back. Now that I know what the restaurant looks like it'll be my new "go to" Indian/Pakistani restaurant from now on.

Moti Mahal on Gerrard I'll stop in only if I'm in the neighborhood when I visit the Gerrard India Bazaar area.

Brasilian Feijoada Completa

Amazing, I'm going to try the take-out this Saturday. Thanks for this recommendation, even though I believe it is not a Brazilian establishment.

Good Brazilian restaurants?

This is very good to hear the place has re-opened and has not gone out of business like some may have thought.

Would you happen to know approximately what the menu price for feijoada is on a Saturday? I really want to eat there this weekend. LOL

Logan Grill?

Passed by yesterday and it was still papered up. Really hope this place opens up soon. Certainly hope the new owners have much better hours than the old owner. Think this place use to close around 3 or 4pm on weekdays which was not a good thing.

It's a gem location and this new establishment could have some potential. Also, somebody should take over the property across the street (south-east corner) and start a business there as well. It's been vacant and the white coloured cornerstore has been out of business for years.

Would love to see the old Logan Grill turn into a good Fish&Chips shop in the corner. ;)

Logan Grill?

Walked right by the place this morning and didn't even notice the papered up windows. Hmmn...?

where to buy properly cut Goat Meat in the GTA ?

I've bought goat meat in cubes with bone-in several times at just about every major supermarket chain. They come all pre-cut in cubes in a 1kg bag for about $10. In fact, after work I'm going to buy a bag at the No Frills or Food Basics near my house to cook curry goat with rice for dinner. From what I can recall the goat products from these supermarkets usually are from New Zealand.

Banks Beer and Flying Fish

Last night I was at the LCBO picking up our holiday supply of alcohol and discovered the store carried Banks Beer. Was so happy and I can't wait to drink my favorite Caribbean lager for Christmas. It's been a very long time since I had a beer from the West Indies. I want to crack one open right now, but I'll probably wait until the evening. LOL

Here's to the best beer in the world that originally came from Guyana and then migrated to Barbados and now everywhere. :)

where to buy oxtail cheap?

I'll be doing some holiday cooking myself in the next few days. Any more suggestions for where to buy affordable, but good quality oxtail not already mentioned here?

Seriously, why is oxtail so expensive these days? I asked my Caribbean take-out place at my food court where he got his great tasting oxtail and he mentioned it was from a supplier that only dealt with restaurants. However, he did give me advice about buying the good stuff. He said look for what is called "yellow" oxtail as opposed to "white" oxtail. He told me yellow oxtail is the higher quality meat and it is a bit more expensive.

Phoenix Bakery's new location in East Chinatown

Last month they moved from their Broadview location south of Gerrard to its new address 613-615 Gerrard Street East (just east of Broadview) in the same area. I sincerely hope they do well in this location because establishments do not seem to fair well in terms of longevity as a business. It used to be the New Grand Restaurant and had several other names afterwards when it was still a restaurant.

Anyway, it is now a spacious bakery with several tables to eat your purchased orders. It occupies about half the space the restaurant used to take up. Its layout reminds me a bit of the Furama Bakery on 248 Spadina Avenue in Chinatown. The size is about same, but Phoenix Bakery may actually be bigger.

Personally, I'd recommend this place because it is open very early. From 7:30am to 10:30am you can even get hot congee at this bakery for its large size container for only $2.00. They have different sizes and all. Yesterday, I had the salted donut priced at $0.80 with my large preserved egg and pork congee. My total came to $2.80. Where else in the city can you eat congee with a dough fritter for only $2.80. I'll definitely be returning to this place more often for my breakfast. :)

best uncooked souvlaki

I'd like to try these souvlakis from Sun Valley on the Danforth mentioned by you and cheesymama. I'm a bit confused because there are 2 Sun Valleys on the Danforth.

Sun Valley Fine Foods 583 Danforth Ave. (Near Pape & Danforth)

and

Sun Valley Supermarket 468 Danforth Rd. (Danforth and Birchmount) in Scarborough

Which store did you buy the souvlakis from???

Looking for authentic Jerk Chicken ingredients in Toronto

Think I'm too lazy to insert links for you, but I can confidently say you will find what you are looking for at either Nicey's Food Mart or Danforth Food Market. Both of these chains specialize in Caribbean groceries, just google and find the store closest to you.

I'm heading to both of these stores tonight myself to pick up some Matouk's hot sauce and Irish Moss.

Source for Hot Dogs and buns used by street vendors?

Do you know if Champs sells the sausages that the street vendors sell as well? I like the hot dogs, but I absolutely love the sausages more!

What should I order from Sam Woo Chinese BBQ? I am unfamiliar with this cuisine.. menu pics included

This take-out menu really makes me miss the old Sam Woo on Dundas Street West east of Spadina right in Chinatown. These days the only time I can get to a SW restaurant is if somebody with a car drives me there. Still don't have a driver's license or own a car since I live in the heart of downtown Toronto. I still get by on my bicycle and public transit, but I seriously miss Sam Woo when their restaurant was in Chinatown. :(

Yummy Yummy Kitchen - Re-discovery of a Chowhound Hall-Of-Famer

Woohoo, a truck with my name YummyYummy!!! ;)

Anyone been to British Style Fish & Chips recently

I've been there this summer and it is still not on par with the old owners. With that said, I still don't mind doing business with them because I'm always craving good old fish & chips on lazy Sunday afternoons all the time. It's one of the only places in that end of the city that is actually open on Sundays. I have a ritual on Sunday afternoons when I my crave my fix for F&C. I take a quick bike ride to British and then cycle down to eat one of my all-time favorite meals in the world by the lake on the beach. :)

Caribana Food places for next weekend!! any suggestions? caribean foods like Roti places,Jamaican and good jerk chicken?

I will be dropping by this neighborhood this weekend for some good old fashioned Caribbean food at RAP`s which is just a little west of Randy`s between Oakwood and Marlee. Saw Horace the owner working the BBQ outside the shop grilling his jerk chicken while I was on the bus. Didn`t get a chance to get off the bus to grab some food, but I will this weekend. Been craving RAP`s food since I saw him working the BBQ and the jerk chicken looked delicious. Been ages since I had some of his mouth-watering food.

Molson Ampitheatre

Since the selection for food and drinks pre-concerts at the Molson Amphitheatre has always been slim. We`ve always made the Wheat Sheaf our traditional drinking hole before concerts for several years now. Once you get to the venue you can later pay for their largest size $11 beer in a plastic cup that is a rip off. LOL

Papa Sol's in Leslieville...should I be excited

Saw the "opening soon" sign for Papa Sol just recently and then I coincidentally saw this thread and had to post about it immediately. I have no idea what will become of the old funeral home nor would I even consider dining in it if it became a restaurant. That's just me and my personal feelings about these type of things... LOL

Anyone know what's become of the funeral home at Gerrard and Jones? It's the one directly across the street from the new trendy burger joint at Gerrard and Jones called Great Burger Kitchen.

Papa Sol's in Leslieville...should I be excited

Always looking forward to more new food joints opening up in my neighborhood. However, I'm not too keen about this specific location 717 1/2 Queen Street East (just east of Broadview on Queen). It is located next door to what used to be the old funeral home. Call it silly superstition or what I'm always concerned about the metaphysical negative vibes it may have if I enter. LOL

where is the best fish and chips in Toronto/GTA??

Yes, Parkside is my favorite in the east end ever since Woodgreen closed over a year ago. Also, I plan to give British Fish & Chips (Coxwell/Dundas area) another chance, but many have mentioned ever since the owners changed a few years ago it hasn't been the same (gone downhill). However, I have heard some positive reviews from some people saying it is not bad nowadays. I'll have to judge for myself when I return for a visit soon.

Best Caribbean in Toronto?

Brendan's Roti's has let you down by being closed for about six months now. Still don't know if Coconut Grove food is anywhere near as good as when the old owners use to make the food?

Best Caribbean in Toronto?

Just came back from Gerrard Square and I probably jinxed it by talking about Tropical Joe's here. Their prices have gone up more or less by $1.00. Used to pay $6.25 for my large goat roti or dinner with rice and peas and now it is $7.25 plus taxes coming to $8.19. :( Anyway, at least the huge portions are still happening. Now I'd better shut up or something may change about that. Hope not! LOL

Best places to buy pistachio nuts in the GTA , recommendations please?

Want to confirm 100% that Samara is still open. I dropped by for the first time earlier today and bought some pistachios priced at $8.99 per pound. Afterwards, I bought some of the fresh pita bread mentioned at Rami's along with some more amazing pistachios nuts priced at $7.99 per pound.

Think I'm done with exploring the different stores along Lawrence Avenue East for the best pistachios. Although I've only been to 3 vendors: Rami's, Arz and Samara, I definitely found my personal favorite. Rami's is the WINNER and obvious choice for me, although I wish the nuts were bigger. Also, Rami's pistachios have a very unique and subtle taste and are not as salty as both Arz and Samara.

Both Samara and Arz sell the bigger pistachios nuts which I like, but there is something about the acidity or saltiness that my body doesn't agree with. Maybe, it is the local roasting at these places that I'm sort of allergic to and it doesn't work for me. Who knows?

Guyanese Style Chinese restaurants in the GTA?

Last night I discovered another Chinese family owned restaurant that serves Guyanese Chinese food. It's called FRIENDSHIP RESTAURANT and is located at Sheppard Avenue East and Victoria Park area. It's dining section is a lot bigger than Lucky Lin's, but I only got take-out because the place was very rowdy Friday evening with people drinking alcohol and playing dominoes near the front of the restaurant.

My chicken curry with rice dinner was very good and I'll definitely have to try other dishes when I come back.

They have an all-you-can-eat lunch buffet from Monday to Friday. If I'm ever in the area again during those hours, I'll have to try it out. I'm hoping the place is not so crazy and loud during their lunch buffet. LOL

Brought home a take-out menu, but here's a link with some of the food choices on the menu. However, it's an older link so the prices have gone up a little.

BTW, here is a bit of an update since I started this thread back in September 2006. Since my journey began searching for restaurants owned and operated by Chinese people from the Caribbean. I've only been fortunate enough to try four different places for food so far. Here's my short list and the food has actually been great at all of them. No joke!

1. CHO'S WOK WEST INDIAN & CHINESE RESTAURANT (Midland/Eglinton area)

2. Carribean Heat Family Restaurant (Finch/Keele area)

3. Lucky Lin's Restaurant (Markham/Eglinton area)

4. Friendship Restaurant (Sheppard/Victoria Park area)

Presently, my favorite restaurant out of the 4 is the first one on my list Cho's Wok. It was the first one I discovered and feel the most comfortable and safest in this clean fast-food restaurant environment. It's a bit nicer looking than Lucky Lin's which is more or less a hole-in-the-wall type of place. Both Caribbean Heat and Friendship Restaurant have nicer dining sections which are adequate for family style dining (Also both of these restaurants have a lunch buffet from Monday to Friday). From what I remember, Friendship Restaurant has the largest dining section out of the four places.

I've eaten West Indian Chinese food at other places here in the GTA, but the restaurants were not owned or managed by Chinese people. A couple of places didn't even have Chinese chefs doing the cooking. How authentic is that? LOL

I gladly still welcome new places to try West Indian Chinese food whether it is coming from Jamaica, Guyana or Trinidad as long as it is from the Caribbean. Bon appetite! ;)

Bar options to host Lost series finale party.

Definitely keep us all up to date about this series finale bash for LOST here. I want to attend a viewing party if the venue and atmosphere is a good one.

Here's the bar I can recommend from an amazing party I attended last year for the series finale of Battlestar Galactica on March 2009. There were about 50 people at the backroom for this sci-fi event. I remember we paid only $5 bucks for the party and it included great finger foods as well. I had a great time there. It was held at:

Sports Centre Cafe
49 St Clair W Toronto, ON M4V 1K6
(416) 928-9525

If you don't organize a party there, I certainly hope another FACEBOOK or LOST forums group organizes a party there. It was so PERFECT for the occasion, 2 super-jumbo size projector TV's, plus about 30 smaller TV's spread across the room. I absolutely loved the place when we had the BSG party there.

I'm guessing Yonge-Dundas Square will probably have a LOST finale party there too, but I'd prefer to watch it indoors drinking some beers. LOL

Best Caribbean in Toronto?

Another old school favorite of mine from when I lived in the area was RAP's on Eglinton Avenue West just west of Marlee Avenue and east of Oakwood. It was my favorite late night after clubbing take-out place for great Jamaican food.

Do a search on this site if you want to find more info about RAP's here. I know it has been mentioned before.

Never mentioned Albert's because I've only had negative things to say about them. Starting with their overpriced and terrible food. Now Randy's I'd better revisit again because I forgot how great their Jamaican beef patties were.

Now I'm getting nostalgic and really miss being young and living in the "Little Jamaica" area in my early twenties and sticking out like a sore thumb. That was a different lifetime ago! LOL

Guyanese Style Chinese restaurants in the GTA?

Pastryrocks, thank you for the Lucky Lin's recommendation and I can't believe it took me almost 2 years to try it out. My food was delicious and affordable. Yesterday, I totally had a craving for West Indian Chinese food, so I pulled up this thread again and saw this name and address that I haven't tried yet.

I grabbed takeout for Chicken Chow Mein with the chicken on top and it cost $7.50 plus taxes. The portions were huge and I finished the actual meal in 3 sittings. LOL I'll definitely be returning to this place even though some may consider it a hole-in-the-wall.

Yeah, we still have to find a good West Indian Chinese food restaurant that is operated by Chinese people and comfortable enough to actually dine in now. LOL

Best Jamaican Patties - GTA

Who are the suppliers for the bakeries at Warden and Bathurst subway stations? Heard both are from the same source, anyone know?

Should have asked when I had one at Warden subway yesterday! ;)

BTW, there are actually two bakeries that sell beef patties at Warden subway. I remember last year I did a taste test and both are actually good. However, it is actually the first bakery you see named BAKERY ON THE GO which is the better of the two.

Somebody has a little blog about them:

http://www.torontoslop.com/2009/01/warden-station-patties.html

Bobby Wham, what a fluke or coincident. I just noticed the name and the blog after posting and it is your blog. Cool. LOL
