Sona 9-Course Spontanée Tasting Menu, in Photos
Wow the food and your blog pics were amazing. I wish some of the courses were non-seafood because my eating companion is allergic to seafood so that would be a 100% no for him.
So can I ask about how much this meal costs?
* Pinkberry - Marina Del Rey *
I finally went to the new Pinkberry in MDR which is near my office. This would be my 6th Pinkberry that I have been to. Overall, I can say that I was very disappointed with my visit.
The place is tiny. There is only one table inside and it was occupied by this employee and 3 of his female friend. While I waited in line, I did notice that same employee went to the back and made several Large Yogurts and he gave it to his friends (I know they didn't pay for it because they were surprised).
Anyways, there is two lines, first you get in line to pay. Most people in line today were newbies and didn' t know what to order. So that slowed down the line.
After ordering, you cram into this second line to wait for this one employee to make the yougurts. The other employee was most likely on his break.
Anyways, the medium yogurt seemed smaller than I usually recall. I noticed the employee did not scoop fruit into my cup but rather he used a tong and was counting how many pieces of fruit he put into my medium order. I counted 7 blackberries and 15 blueberries. He did scoop in my mocchi which was nice. Well when he was done, he slammed my yogurt on the counter so the few toppings that I had fell on the counter. I asked, do you have any dry green tea power? "No".
Oh well.
Anyways, I think I'll drive a bit futher to try out the one on Sawtelle. I don't think I'll go back to the MDR because of the skimpiness with the topping and the tight location.
* East in Little Tokyo - what happened? *
I used to love going to East. It was tapas style so I could get a few skewers, some beef stew (niku jaga) and some sushi for relatively cheap. And it was very good.
Well I went there last Wednesday and I immediately noticed the menu had changed. It was much smaller. A lot of the great smaller dishes that I love were gone. The skewers were gone. I knew they had gotten a lot of the skewers in the past like my favorite Salmon and Green Onion but they still had chicken and some other ones. Also the stools were gone but now they have these soft cushy seats. Lastly, the lovely Japanese women that work there are gone. They are replaced by these obviously gay (nothing wrong with gay... don't get me wrong) waiters who don't understand a word you are saying. I got the impression the place got bought out and are now run by Koreans. Just a vibe I got. My meal was okay but it wasn't as cheap as I used to remember.
Anyone know the real story behind all this?
Seeking Pinkberry-like Frozen Yogurt in West Hills/Woodland Hills Area
They are supposed to be putting in a Pinkberry in the new Westfield mall but that wont happen for a few months. But I hear Barenaked Yogurt is quite similar.
Sam Woo's on Sepulveda-deserves more talk, so good!
I have eaten at many Sam Woo's. Personally for me, my favorite is the one in Chinatown on Alpine street. And next is the one in Montery Park in the 99 Ranch Market mall.
I never seemed to like he Van Nuys one. The BBQ pork has always been hard and did not seem fresh and the food had too much MSG for my taste. Also I think it is a bit pricier.
Anyways, just my 2 cents on the matter.
Bean & Cheese Burritos--Who has the BEST?
I don't think I have ever ordered a bean and cheese burrito except when I need something quick at Del Taco but in the world of Bean and Cheese burritos, I just love Ramona's frozen bean and cheese burritos. We used to get them in elementary school and now you can get them at Smart & Finals in the frozen section. There is a perfect balance of bean and cheese and with a little hot sauce it's a great meal! Give it a try!
How good is OK Chinese?
I used to live near an OK and it's a bit better than OK.... basically you get what you pay for and it's pretty cheap. I like the chicken potatoe and the rib pork.
Now I've gone to many much more expensive Chinese fast food places near my work in MDR and they are far worse than OK and much more expensive.
Cheap, yummy lunch in Canoga Pk. Any suggestions?
I love the new updated Topanga Mall food court - it's beautiful and the food looks exciting but I find it very pricey. A friend and I just ate there. We got at the Korean place, 2 beef/port combos (total of two bowls) and one water and it was $20.
Honestly to me that is too expensive for mall food. My pork was cold.
The Pantry - What to get?
I usually get the short ribs and I like their grilled toast... normally during dinner the bread is not grilled but they can grill it for you.
Dinner in Burbank suggestions
My father is getting treated for dinner in Burbank this Friday. He asked me for suggestiosn for something high class/expensive (since it will be free).
He loves seafood.
Any suggestions?
All the places that I personally go to Burbank does not fit the bill - I go to BJs, Black Angus, Mi Piace, etc...
Best Lemon Cake
I need to get a lemon cake for someone's b-day party in a few weeks.
Any recommendations on where I can get one that won't cost me a fortune and is really good? I'm not really a lemon cake eater so I have no leads.
Thanks!
* Something Different B-day Party *
That is an excellent suggestion. We took him there 4 years ago! LOL! I know I'm running out of options. Plus he can't eat seafood which limits the choices.
* Something Different B-day Party *
So a really good friend of mine is celebrating his b-day in a few weeks. I talked to him today and he said he wants to do something "different". Now he's pretty well versed food/resturant wise. He loves Hot Pot, Korean BBQ, Mexican food, Indian, etc. I know he does not like Ethiopian food.
So any chowhounders know of anything "different" that I can surprise him with?
Mi Piace, Pasadena - Get it Together!
I find the food at MP to be really good but I agree with you the service is lacking. I have only been to the Pasadena location a few times but the one in Burbank has similar issues.
Old english style Prime Rib
OMG Thank you all for posting this! I just love Old English Style Prime Rib dinners. I am planning on checking all these places out.
If you are ever in the bay area, there is this amazing place called the House of Prime Rib that is Old English style and they serve a complete dinner - tons of food. BEST OF ALL, you can request another serving of Prime Rib if you want more!
Who serves Tater Tots?
omg I LOVE breakfast burritos with tater tots.... but the only one that I could find is in Anaheim... I live in the SFV....
*pouts*
Who serves Tater Tots?
OMG Chilli-Cheese Tater-Tots?!?!? Where is there a local Sonic - I must go now!
Pinkberry Opens on 6th/Berendo in K-Town
Yes I went to the K-Town location about a week ago. This is their corporate location. It is larger than most locations will be. I had to find parking on the street but it wasn't that hard to find.
I also noticed that they were pretty good about the serving size. The previous one that I went to had skillfully made a nice serving but it was hallow in the middle.. the k-town location was better about not doing that. One of the guys there was from the West Hollywood location.
I liked this locatation way better than the Melrose location.
Girasole
I finally tried Girasoles... I have been eyeing it for months now. I tried the spinach gnoochi and was underwhelmed. Maybe I had too high of an expectations. I guess I wanted more potatoes rather than all spinach. Maybe I should have gotten the regular gnoochi. I thought the prices were a tad bit high. Two of us ate and it was about $56 bucks and we only got one appetizer and 2 entries and 2 iced teas.
Hmmmm... I will have to go back and try something different. The place is very cute and there were exciting things on the menu.
Pinkberry?
I am so glad you said that cuz when I wen to the Melrose one last week my friends and I made a comment about it... Jeez... first the serving cups get smaller and smaller and now they swirl... sheesh!
But I'm addicted. AIEEE!
Pinkberry?
I went to the Melrose Pinkberry on Friday after hearing that it was open. The location wasn't that great. The A/C was not working so the store was very hot and it is laid out pretty weird. The line was about 20mins. I was a bit surprised on how ugly this Pinkberry was and there was little or no parking. I ended up parking 5 blocks down on Melrose and walked.
I think I still prefer the West Hollywood location.
Is Anything As Good As IN-N-OUT BURGER??!! [Moved from L.A. board]
Well the Ultimate Cheeseburger with grilled onion is a mighty burger if you ask me.
Pinkberry?
Yes Pinkberry has grown on me. I hear that Koreatown just opened and I heard that there is one in North Hollywood too. Someone I know in New York said that one just opened too. They really need a webpage with their locations.
Pinkberry?
First time I had Pinkberry, I thought the same. But the 2nd and 3rd time they got more and more delicious. But then I also noticed the serving size got smaller and smaller. Anyways, it seems to get better after the first time. Weird, eh?
Pumpkin everything....That time of the year!
I think there is a Double Rainbow in WLA somewhere... Let me check... I used to go there when I lived on the West Side.
