Yuca instead of potatoes - salt cod recipe

Interesting conversation. Having lived for a bit in Colombia this dish seems familiar, minus the peanuts.

Asian Markets in Burlington, VT?

It used to be a Dairy Queen, now it is essentially the same but called something like "Dairy Barn."

Asian Markets in Burlington, VT?

The one on North street is still there and should have what you need plus a Tibetian food oriented shop opened up just opposite.
There is another Vietnamese store just opposite of the Dairy Queen as well (I think that is North Winooski.)

vermont mystic pie company

I just was at the Shaw's Supermarket on Rt 7 in Burlington and confirmed that they carry both apple and blueberry. From the appearance of the freezer display it looks like they might be distributed by the same folks as American Flatbread.

vermont mystic pie company

I recall seeing them at the Shaw's on Shelburne Rd/Rt 7, and I would imagine that they could be found at City Market as well.
I'll double check the next time I'm there.

vermont mystic pie company

Saw a stack of them at the local mega mart the other week, of course I do live in Vermont, take from that what you will.

Madera's in Burlington - How's The Food?

I think it is still there, but I found the place horrible when I went there so it has dropped off my radar.
Skinny Pancake is a crepe place just around the corner from there and does lunch.

Where to buy dried chiles (ancho) in Burlington, Vermont????

They have one pound bags of anchos and new mexican peppers in the produce aisle at the Shaws on Shelburne Rd for about the same price that could find it on line without the shipping cost.

Cardamom - Acquired taste? Or is a spice that is either loved or hated?

Years ago I worked with someone from Nepal. One afternoon during a break I noticed that he was snacking on something & I asked him what he was chewing. It was whole cardimom pods. Always curious I tried it out and have kept the occasional habit for twenty years, it really clears the sinus'.

In Burlington...

My wife frequently ends up at Pauline's with out of town business clients, but only because it is a midpoint between our place and her main partner's. She rates it as o.k.

Anything new in Burlington, Vt. ?

If you're willing to drive an hour an a half, go to Montreal. Half the drive time, many more options.

As far as Burlington goes, hit the Farmer's market in City Hall park (on Saturday) and maybe Fresh Market on Pine Street for some VT cheese and bread, fill up your picnic basket and head down to the waterfront to watch the lake.

Who makes the best pizza in New England?

Rosario's in Milton Vermont claims to have the best pizza in New England or your money back. It isn't but everyone around there is too polite to say anything.

Pizza recommendations for Lansing/MSU area

My nephew is going off to MSU in the fall and considering the combined factors of his mother's (and my brother's) wonderful cooking, his appetite and the nature of college dorm "food" I am concerned that he will starve.

So I am looking for recommendations on where I should get him some gift certificates for off-campus eating or delivery service.

Thanks

finnan haddie

They carry it at the local grocery, Price Chopper, here in Vermont.

You may laugh at me, but please stop long enough to answer my question

Oops, missed that point.
I have a whole mess of what I consider "cooking spoons." They are the sort of spoon that Jethro from the original Beverly Hillbillies would have used to eat cereal. I somehow have an even dozen. Each one holds four tablespoons easily. If one is "dirty" I chuck it in the sink and grab another.

cooking for a new beau for the first time! help!

I have two opposing contributions.
1) My beloved adored that the first meal I served her consisted of steamed vegetables, rice, homemade asian style pickles and seaweed.
2) I have (in my dating days, long gone) like the tactic of complex dishes with long periods of "spare time" in between steps. The down time is good time, the house is warm and welcoming, lots of things are possible (and they don't get the idea that a meal just appears out of nowhere.)

You may laugh at me, but please stop long enough to answer my question

I understand the concern. My beloved cannot touch raw chicken, and I have come to treat anything that comes in touch with chicken like toxic waste. All knives, cutting boards and bowls go immediately into the dishwasher, and I mean immediately. The bag that we brought it home in and all of the wrappings go out into the trash, by the garage right away.
If you are bothered by the mockery just give them some undercooked chicken, their bowels will bring them around.

Effect of the recession on your eating habits.

I've been using my pressure cookers allot more often, the tough cuts become tender far easier with these I find.

While I have always been a gardener this year I broke my rule of "no food plants in the front yard" and planted a fairly large kitchen garden in what is the sunniest part of the property. I moved the ornamentals out back where there is more shade and put up a short fence to keep the neighborhood dogs from peeing on my squash.

Come fall, what we can't eat I will pickle and can.

Best products without High Fructose Corn syrup?

Since I have started avoiding HFCS I just take my favorite fruit juice and add seltzer. I get the taste that I want and avoid the nonsense.

Of course I am old enough to see soda/pop as an occasional treat and not a daily/weekly thing.

What is the quintessential food of your town?

Just before last Christmas a friend "retired" their Scottish Highland breeding bull, and they gave us a few cuts. Quite wonderful once you got beyond the sentimentality.

In desperate need of Korean Food

We've been to Naru in Williston a few times and were not impressed. Plus that is just plain too close to Sakura's smaller space, why settle for bad Korean when there is good Japanese mere steps away.

In desperate need of Korean Food

This website is great, thanks tons for the tip.

"sweet" or "sour" -- which kind of chowhound are you?

Another sour, though I must specify that I am a spicy sour. Leftover pickle water is poured down the drain, not drunk.

And of course all of the "sweets" passed by this post once they saw that it wasn't about Kripy Kreme Donuts.

What is the quintessential food of your town?

One of the first signs of Spring here in Burlington Vermont is the reappearance of Beansie's Hot Dog Bus, a retrofitted school bus that parks in between the police station and Waterfront Park. They serve a Michigan Dog, which is a sweet chili/sloppy joe tomato sauce. Why Michigan, no one knows.
While not great chow, it is an institution.

Do you eat goat?

Doug's BBQ on the Oakland side of the Bay Bridge serves a nice BBq'd goat.

Do you eat goat?

Here in Burlington, Vermont we have seen a large number of Somalis moving into the area. They have brought with them a few wonderful improvements to the area's food culture. Not the least is an increase in the goat market and a number of farmers have begun to respond by raising more goats.

i top my pancakes with...

I top my pancakes with more pancakes.

And even though I live in Vermont I put maple syrup in a "non-food" category. Perhaps having made it as a child has turned me off of it forever.

"Pepsi Throwback" with sugar instead of HFCS?

I grew some stevia in my garden a few years back out of curiosity, tried it in my morning tea when I was out of sugar one day...horrid.

Store Bought Hard Boiled Eggs??!!!

Do they have GSP signals so they are easier to find?
