What is the last new recipe you tried, and how would you rate it?

Banana cupcakes with cream-cheese frosting - low fat, and surprisingly moist and tasty! I left out the walnuts so they were even healthier (didn't think the nuts would really add to the overall flavor).

Restaurant recommendations near W Hotel (City Center)

Hi fellow 'hounds,

We're going to be visiting Chicago this coming Memorial Day weekend - we'll be in town Saturday and Sunday nights. Can I get some recommendations for restaurants around the W Hotel City Center? We are willing to cab it but if there's something close by that's even better.

Specifics: We've been to Chicago before and have eaten at Les Nomades and Rosebud (in the general vicinity of the Marriott on Michigan Ave.). We're up for Italian, French, Mexican, Sushi...actually, we're not too picky at to type as long as the food's good. It is my beau's birthday so I'll need a fine-dining place for one evening and a more relaxed place for the other evening. Also have lunches to fit into our schedule, and we'd love to know about some great neighborhood/hole-in-the-wall spots.

Let me know if I need to be more specific, and I appreciate any insights you've got!

Do you have a favorite I'm-alone-now-so-nobody-will-know favorite dish?

Stouffer's Mac & Cheese - there's a box lurking in my freezer right now.

Where to go for Dessert (after dinner)?

ChikaLicious! We tried it after a disappointing dinner recently and because of the wonderful Earl Grey cake at ChikaLicious the evening was saved :)

Need help with a Valentine dinner party theme!

Fellow chowhounds, I need help! I am planning a Valentine dinner party for about 8 people at our house but am having a brain fart actually coming up with a neat Valentine's Day theme.

To give some background, I really enjoy cooking and we routinely (usually a couple of times a month) invite friends over for a theme dinner...some recent ones were "olives", "Presidential recipes" and "purple foods". The group is usually a mix of couples and singles, so I want to approach the theme with a whimsical or lighthearted bent. I have discarded the more obvious ideas of "red" food or "aphrodisiacs" and while I was thinking of something along the lines of "St. Valentine's Day Massacre" and serving Italian/Chicago food that might be a bit of a stretch.

If anyone has some ideas, I'd love to hear them!

Food that Most People Love and You Don't...

Offal = awful in my book.
Bell peppers (green, red, yellow, orange, purple...can't stand any of them).
Onions - unless they're cooked to oblivion or encased in batter and deep fried. Even then, I tend to pull out the offending onion and just eat the fried batter.
Celery - stringy...yuck.
Licorice/anise/fennel...tastes like cough syrup to me.

Italian in and around Seattle

Brad's Swingside Cafe is one of my favorites for low-key Italian, and Bizzarro is very good as well.

Sea- The Local Vine or Purple Cafe

I'm not familiar with The Local Vine, but I second the Smash in Wallingford nomination. I've been to Purple and it is just too noisy for me, it kills the entire experience.

Dressing vs. Stuffing?

Stuffing (inside or out, doesn't matter). Perhaps it's my Midwestern upbringing.

Stuffing in the bird or outside?

In the bird. The only reason it would be outside in a casserole dish is if I had too much stuffing and needed to cook the leftover that didn't fit inside the bird.

Apple Butter with no canning?

Forgive me if this topic has already been dealt with but my search did not come up with anything and I am desperate!

We went apple picking yesterday and came back with almost 100 lbs of apples. I am planning on making apple pies and applesauce and freezing them, but I'd like to make apple butter as well. The problem is, I don't know how to can and I'd like to try to find an apple butter recipe with doesn't involve canning. I was thinking of preparing apple butter and then freezing it at the end (as an alternative to canning), but I don't know how the end product would turn out.

Does anyone know if it is possible to make apple butter without involving the canning process? Any thoughts, ideas, suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks, fellow hounds!

Bad carrots?

That's happened to me twice now in the past to weeks - it first happened with a 3lb bag of baby carrots, so I figured that I would try a smaller bag next time. Yesterday I picked up a 1lb bag from Whole Foods and had the same issue!

I might also revert back to peeling and cutting my own regular carrots.

We tend to eat bread sparingly but some of the loaves at the farmer's market are impossible to resist, so we freeze it.
